A Mighty Heart (2007)
Universal acceptance and cross cultural dignity
The one line that hit me during the last section of this film was: "Will your opinion of the Pakistanis change, now that your husband has been reported dead." This is what the entire movie is about for me. Jolie's character withstands cultural criticism and insists that terrorists exist all over the world and find weakness in every and any place where there is pain. She does not accept murder as a means of making a political statement. Her character never judged anyone for the kidnapping or the murder of her husband. And that is the message to walk out with. Terrorists seem to think that they can send messages through murder and torture but if you open your eyes and see beyond that, you will be able to discover that what these horrible people are depending on is that you and I will fall to their level and start thinking of murder as a political message. A wonderful performance by Jolie, but more importantly a wonderfully composed and edited film that weaves in a out of a story that unfolded not only into a political but more importantly a human drama.
Kinsey (2004)
I am very excited and proud to recommend this movie
7 out of 10 for historical, medical and political awareness that it brings to its audience. I am sure that a lot of you will or have already walked out on this movie or will stop the movie halfway. And in some ways there are good reasons to. The point of the movie gets across quite early in the picture. Some of the scenes are prolonged and irrelevant but if you don't stick around till the end you will miss out on the man's personal journey. Like I said, in times like these where we seem to have lost the line between commitment and sexual experimentation, this film highlights the importance of loyalty throughout its' course. Loyalty in marriage, loyalty in the study of science, humanity behind research and balance in one's personal life and professional endeavour. It's an important lesson to learn. Especially where sex is concerned. There were times when I expected such a scientist to be more out there, to be more experimentative than he was portrayed as, but the amazing thing was, he, as well as the film managed to retain much dignity by staying focused on their purpose. Watch the film, become educated about our past and appreciate things about love and sex that we take for granted nowadays. A very important social message with stable, hearty performances by Neeson, who lights the screen with his passion, Linney, who warms our hearts with her maternal and intellectual approach, O'Donnel who opts for a secondary but equally as important and affecting role, Oliver Platt who fills in each of the movie's plot gaps with precision and great sentiment.
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004)
7 out of 10 for originality
A really strange film this one is. But if you do have the time and want to get something completely different out of a film, like the very usual entertainment and standard plot line that most films offer WATCH THIS FILM. A very DETAILED film that draws lots of focus onto unusual elements like colour, dialogue (a genre in itself) and unusual characters as well as animation. Where you think everything is set in stone and you know things about the characters and the film is going to end in a certain way, things pop up and surprise you, like Cate Blanchett's brilliantly put together characterisation or the choice of fish and underwater world they have put together and expect the viewer to assume that all this is REAL. Nothing is real in this film. It challenges your concept to the core. That's why it's so easy for someone to fast forward the DVD or get bored and walk out of the cinema. It actually takes effort and commitment to this film to sit down and watch it. See it, also because it will challenge your ideas about set DESIGN, and screen writing. Yes, brings back lots of memories of the Royal T's BUT it has gone a step further, has been less commercial, more risk taking and more fantasy driven. A goon one to challenge your brain and imagination.
The Twilight of the Golds (1996)
JB finds out her child is gay. Does she keep it or not? ow does this affect the family and her husband? Watch it!
What an advanced film for its time! And it was amazing how I ended hating Jeniffer Beals right until the end of the film, who can EVER hate Jennifer Beals! So she must have done a good job...I thought the message of the film was excellent and oh my goodness so realistic. I think there is no possible way to find out whether one will actually want to keep there future child if they actually find out that it will be gay. I mean a true, fair valid point! To tell the truth I felt deeply betrayed by the characters which proves to show that they were well written, well developed and convincing to the core. They will make you question your own values. And whether you are gay or not you will be able to take a stance and maybe just maybe at the end change your mind. C it. It's worth the time and thought.
