For the most part not as good as the original
10 March 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I will need to re-watch the original when I get a chance, because I like things that analyze relationships between men and women. The only improvements on this over (what I remember of) the original were the implication of "programmable kitchens" and the ending - showing that the originator of Stepford was a woman who replaced her husband with a robot. The implication of both Stepford movies is that robots would be more pleasing because all conflict would be removed. My own opinion is that (except for raising children) the traditional family is the wrong concept. Two people can live together perfectly happy if they do activities together but with their own means and only spend as much time together as they both wish. That way, the only possible conflicts are in how much time they choose to be together. I tried it once before (with some success, and I still wish him well) but he originally found me too aggressive, and he needs to remain geographically bound, so I am now 3 months into another (even better) relationship with a man who has all the best features of the other, with definite improvements. My only programming of a man is stating exactly what I was looking for online -and I found him. Robots would be totally wrong for any thinking person, because giving pleasure is part of experiencing it.

X rated (I believe)
22 April 2011
Warning: Spoilers
The movie that I believe this may be was on an adult channel back before Cable companies existed- so pardon that my memory is not so great. It was very well written and was a very dark version of the original Alice with a woman who became obsessed with a green man in an old mirror she discovered. He lured her in to a very surreal porn world with pools of excrement, but also some attractions. I also recall one scene where she was reclined on a dining table with the buffet food covering her body, while acquaintances (all elegantly clothed) dined off of her. It was one of the few X rated movies that I saved (when I had a Beta DVR).

Half way thru, I knew it was a Ken Russell
29 November 2010
This is one that I saved on my TiVo because it sounded interesting, but I didn't bother to watch it for months. Now that I did, I was drawn into the plot, and as I saw some of the interactions of the characters, I recognized the quirky style of Ken Russell. This is one of the reasons that he is one of my favorite directors. I had to come here to IMDb to verify that he is the director and now, after reading other reviews, I will NOT save the version that I have from TV, but will buy the best original cut. It is truly about how most people interact (except for Perkins character ;-) I could see this as a very erotic stimulus for many people in the romantic scenes, as it is for me.

Alice (2009)
Unusually good adaptation-not just Sci-fi!
8 December 2009
I originally scheduled the film after seeing a (mostly) negative review of it on Slate, but as I am very familiar with the original works, I found that I really loved it. I wrote a review on TV.com after seeing the 1st half and now saw the rest. I DID scramble the 2 books together, but used them both creatively, and unlike some commentators, I believe that the fact that Alice had grown up, while the hatter and others were frozen in time was entirely in keeping with a "Wonderland". The Sci-fi aspects were also completely in keeping with the spirit of the work. I am not a great fan of "action films" but I think this would appeal to them. I have never read any Harry Potter, but I saw one with my grandkids and I think this would be no more frightening to children than those. All in all, I just emailed many friends and relatives to try to catch it on the next whole broadcast (until???) this coming Sunday at 6PM.

Compelling - I may want to read the book
19 March 2009
This world was more frightening than 1984, Brave New World or Mad Max! In a way it had issues raised but those (the Orwell and Huxley books I had read both in younger days and more recently). When I chose it out of a list of possible viewings last week, the title suggested something adapted from Chaucer, so I was not expecting this. I also only noted the recently departed actress in the cast at the end (I think it was a coincidence that Encore Love channel scheduled that). In spite of the negative comments that I see on the board, it is definitely worth watching! If it is not as good as the book (which 1984 and Brave New World were most assuredly not), then I may also check that out. The major players were well cast and although I don't care for so much violence, it was mostly all fitting to the plot. My only complaint was the opening where it is unclear where the family are or why they are at a border (entering or leaving) or even why they are being persecuted (although I saw that in a review by someone who read the book). I went on to watch "Genesis" (an Indie film with a much more calming effect)- also well worth the time to view it.

Just seen on TV
7 February 2009
Just so you know - I love films which are good (even fairly good) biographies of artists. There are too few done. That said, recent Hollywood films want to keep to safe formulas in all their films, so one cannot expect "excellence". I really enjoyed this film, however, even though after watching it I had to review a biography of Modigliani, because I did not know much about his life. I knew about the artist's community and understood much of their interaction with other artists and authors in all those "decadent" years of the 20s. I understand that Frida was not yet in the group (but someone wanted her in the film ?!) and I still would like to know what real person was represented in little Dedo- a sweet little boy, but was he another illegitimate child from earlier times?? I see nothing in actual biography. All in all I think it IS a "KEEPER".

Fun movie - if you like that style
30 May 2008
I watched it tonight as a TiVo suggestion. I thought it was a good combo between "To Wong Foo..." and "Victor Victoria". I saw 2 stage performances of the latter (and the movie) but the stage were separated by many years- still fun (in Chicago). Wong Foo I've only seen movie but many times. As a woman of 70, I know that drag queens could teach most of us a lot, and people have often told me I look just like Debbie Reynolds (from my 20's to recently).

I wrote in to the cable networks that they messed up by having "Queer Eye for .. girl" using regular lesbians, because they have little to teach other women. I would love lessons on styling from drag queens (if I can't get a free makeover from Nick Arrojo).

Excellent View on Relations with Native People
29 April 2007
Like "Rabbit Proof Fence" (another Aussie film) this one really has a natural and touching view on those of us "white people" who arbitrarily converted so many parts of the world. To my knowledge, none have been done in this manner of the progression of our US-Hollywood would frown on that.

I saw it on Encore channel and have saved it to share (as also the afore-mentioned) with friends and family. This type of film is seldom screened where any of them might be able to view it.

Both of the films have protagonists who are repressed and fighting against the issues which are considered "important" by the authorities of their time.

True to the Dickens style-updated (possible spoilers)
1 August 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I was favorably impressed by this movie (which I watched because it was based on Dickens). I greatly disagree that Dickens was like a Disney of his day (as one reviewer stated). He was trying to emphasize the wrongs of society at his time as this film also does. It is also very good to base a new plot on a real classic. I was pleased that I did not have to witness graphic scenes (while still knowing what occurred).

I do not consider this a classic, so have not saved it to my collection (most of my friends/family would not appreciate it -but many of them also do not read/enjoy Dickens). It had the horrible taste of poverty and all that it can bring as well as the evil characters that he liked to point out. The "senator" although making an attempt to contact- it was never clear to me just what he hoped to accomplish, as he ultimately made no attempt to provide any alternative to Oliver, but return to that life.

Another reviewer made light of the fact of Oliver's life (father unknown) but made no mention of the many foster homes (some probably unmentioned) before he arrived there. I understand from my studies how immensely difficult all that could have been for a young man with no real roots.

Great Surreal Fantasy!
28 July 2006
Warning: Spoilers
As a lover of the surreal (in art and film) I was pleased to discover this film on IFC. It is definitely a keeper. Most of the other reviews tell the general plot (not all correct) so I won't bother to bore anyone with that. The main thing is the alternate worlds concept which is brought on by Ana's impending illness, and the way she manages to link with someone else after being so "alone", and finally with her family, which I believe is still at least a little troubled. It only can be called a horror movie in that it has frightening scenes but is a fantasy (with a little hint of "coming of age" only because Ana is a pre-teen who "hates boys"). I heartily recommend it to those who appreciate the stretch of their imagination.

Marry for fame?
4 July 2006
I was reminded of Ken Russell's Music Lovers, and was beginning to wonder "how many women marry men to associate themselves with success?"(Hillary Clinton). And how often does this choice lead to some form of dementia? Russell is one of my favorites and I LOVE some of his best (Music Lovers, Devils of Loudon, Tommy, Altered States & Gothic). But back to the subject- Do we know of other women who have attached themselves to (potentially) famous men who did so while being mentally unbalanced? I need to watch this film again and re-evaluate, but it seems that everyone may have neglected the real relationship issues in this. And like the afore-mentioned film, the relationship may have been totally one-sided.

Fun for Tony Martin fans
23 June 2006
Tony Martin was the only singer/actor who I EVER had a crush on, so I totally disagree with the reviewer who said that he's only fit for gangster roles (REAL women don't want a man who looks pretty like a woman)! I graduated HS in 1955, so I was younger than Janet Leigh in 51, but I loved his big hit "I get ideas". As to the film, he did not look as good as I remember in publicity pictures (there was not the extent of distribution back then so I do not remember ever seeing him in film). I agree that his acting was not superb, but not much worse than Gene Kelly, tho' the dancing could be better. In those days the studios tried to make their people as versatile as possible. I think I'll save this one on DVD just for old times sake (of my old crush) because (with that "Big Chief Hole in the Ground" musical number), it will probably not get much exposure in the future. It is not at all PC (it's almost offensive even to me). It is surely offensive to native Americans.

One of my favorites from the 70s
22 June 2006
I was just checking on this because I just watched "The Final Curtain", starring O'Toole in 2002 (or 2003). The other had the same type of really Bizarre black comedy and I really loved them both, though this one still remains a favorite and the other film was not quite an all time favorite, but well worth a view if you like this. It is interesting to see that he managed to keep the marvelous comic timing in spite of 30 years passing. The plot twists and turns and the interspersed musical numbers have great dramatic impact and the social commentary is really fabulous. It is a wonderful and fun commentary on the hypocrisy of classes then and now.

Another US viewer
22 June 2006
As I saw in the last review I read, not many in this country have even seen it, But I viewed it today on cable and thought it was worth some thumbs up on my TiVo. It was of a class with O'Toole's "The Ruling Class" and (tho' he's aged much since that) shows that he still has a flair for the slightly sick comedy that many of us love. All I can say is I'm happy for digital cable with all the choices and TiVo for finding things that I enjoy. None of the other actors were known to me and I did not recognize the gal from "AB-FAB" but overall, it was a fun movie to watch. Much better than the "lesson" movies that Hollywood has chosen to give us in recent years. I am happy to confine my movie viewing to those of vintage (30's and 40s), foreign (even with subtitles) and the offerings of IFC and Sundance.

Tango (1999)

slightly political but lovely dancing
29 May 2006
I just viewed this on IFC channel and definitely recommend to anyone who may want to learn the tango. Besides the (rather predictable) story line it has so many great authentic tango dancers of all ages that for that reason alone it is worth viewing. I found myself getting up to dance repeatedly and I enjoyed the drama as well, though on my part there were no surprises. It was based on political issues in Argentina, so those who have an interest in that will see it, but the main story is of unrequited love on many planes and of passion for the dance (as well as other passions).

The major story revolves around a theater company going into production and a mafia boss who has a "protégé" who he wants to have given an audition. She is ambitious and later rejects him and we expect to see some consequences.

Songs made a great difference
15 March 2006
I was hoping that I would find in your site that this was based on a period French piece (Baudelaire or such). I found it SO amusing, a typical old-time melodrama. I have never seen Catherine Deneuve in a film that had no redeeming qualities, so when this came up in a new channel on my cable system, I opted to TiVo it. I had just received notice that this channel was added. I have only read the first page of reviews by others, but want to say that it is really a charming piece, lots of references to other films and such. In addition to overall agreement with other reviews, I want to point out that the songs not only do NOT detract, but greatly contribute to the overall film - like the chorus in a Greek Play. Each song makes a major statement about life in general and that person's views about it. The final "There is not such a thing as happy love" is the grandma's message to her family - never would be mine, as 3 of my 4 children have been happily married for many years. Very touching, tho'.

just a question -my 1st viewing
11 November 2005
I really enjoyed the entire film (I don't go out so only see them on cable). I wonder if anyone has further insight into the role played by the little boy with the big blue eyes. Was he meant to represent the innocents of humanity in general, or did he have another role somewhere that I missed?

(added to provide enough lines for guidelines) I also would have liked a little more clarity to some of the other relationships. I may have to view it again to see just how the red headed guy related to the son of the scientist, and whether the toothless guy was known (and how) to Bruce's character. The film was much more violent than I'm used to from Gilliam, but I like offbeat and it is definitely on my thumbs up list.

enjoyable with online commentary
29 May 2005
I enjoy this kind of films which are out of the ordinary. When they start out with a cast of seemingly unrelated characters it really helps to have a site like this which can explain to me what I may be missing. I just watched it on IFC cable and (though I won't save it because it would take 2 DVDs) I recommend it for the amount of human insight it showed. As a senior person, I've seen/done it all and really appreciate good films.

I saw comments on your site about the 2 joggers and hoped to see some explanation about why the unknown breaks down as he did and wanted to see more about some of the other "minor" characters as well. I also like to see crimes solved rather than loose ends but I appreciate that was part of the style of the film.
