Filled with the Spirit! Go to your King!
24 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This film is Filled with the Holy Spirit, not an easy thing to do. Unbelieving, pagan Romans become Christians, the Roman main character prays with sincerity for his suffering friend, in the end the stars go to their death for what they believe - that a poor carpenter saved their souls.

The crucifixion scene is effective even though shot on a sound stage. I wept. I loved Victor Mature for calling out the Roman pigs and putting a curse on their empire. Thieves! Murderers! You call yourselves masters of the world! A curse on you!

And a gay emperor - you can't top that!

Renounce this dead Jew who dared to call himself a King!

I cannot, sire, he is the Son of God!

The musical score is powerful and sublime; one of the best ever! So I recommend it and ignore the dated parts and poor staging of a bygone Hollywoood era.

"Why doesn't he love me...?"
25 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Oh, man, I actually lived through this era - personally and wholeheartedly - like many others of my generation. Every bit of this film rings true - to me at least! It captures a many brief moments in time that I will never forget.

For instance, the clothes, background music (Led Zeppelin!), the mood of '73-74 post-hippie years, hard rock (naturally), sex, drugs, southern Cal living, teenage angst, and so much more. Turns out I was even in attendance at some of the concerts (e.g. Yes at SD Sports Arena!) that Crowne reviewed live at the time! Also, I'm a huge Led Zep fan and this film covers most of their best tunes. I was in Rock Heaven!

And the castings is unparalleled! Also, there are many inside observations, such as, "Does anybody remember laughter?" spoken by Penny Lane but she's actually quoting a Robert Plant line by Led Zeppelin.

I never thought that a film could be about something I lived myself, but here it is!

Great Chick flick, but O'Neal's a Star!
16 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Ryan O'Neal holds this film together, and the understated direction (a lot of closeups!). I have come to believe that films which become huge hits are due to underlying reasons often not apparent on the screen.

For instance, I've read that many women wonder if their man will love them even if they become incapacitated or begin to die, such as in this film. The answer here is a resounding Yes! So, many tears are shed as we walk with O'Neil through this tragedy. It's timeless actually.

Ali McGraw was a model turned actress and it shows in her acting, but she's photogenic and slender, so it's okay!

Oh, and the musical score ain't bad either!

Mookie is an A-hole
12 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The protagonist (Mookie) throws a trash can though his boss's window and then Mookie wants to get paid?? I've never seen a more cynical, anti-hero climatic scene in my life. Lee's character is not likable or sympathetic. The film is racist and one-sided. Well-done if you like negativity and deceit.

I liked some of the innovative film techniques, but this piece is pretty much humorless and takes itself way too seriously.

Some cameos are good and Radio Raheem adds something to the mix with his presence.

I'm sorry; but, I just can't get behind a film with some much hate in it. And it offers no solutions naturally.

It's interesting to note that ....
19 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
.... "The trial was deliberately staged in order to attract publicity to the small town of Dayton, Tennessee, where it was held. Scopes was unsure whether he had ever actually taught evolution, but he incriminated himself deliberately so the case could have a defendant." (Wikipedia)

...This sounds familiar to Rosa Parks protest, which was also preplanned to make a case...

Also interesting that the film here plays it for real, and doesn't present the factual background.

Ah-so.

Taxi Driver (1976)

Overrated & one of the worst epilogues Ever!
19 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I like the atmospheric feel, and musical score! I like the performance by DiNiro and direction by Scorsese. But the writing is atrocious! They tacked on a ridiculous happy ending where this nut job goes back to being a regular taxi driver and leaves Cybil in the dust! What! He's a multiple-murderer with No Motivation other than his disgust for NY and the lowlifes that reside there. Allusions are made to his (Vietnam?) past, but we have no idea of this dudes background; yes, he's a loner, he's honorable in trying to "save" Jodie, but he's also a violent sociopath!! In USA, you have to have a happy ending and this film disowns itself by making lunatic Travis out to be an urban hero! No way! I'm not buying it.

It doesn't age - one of the Dumbest Movies Ever!
16 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
When I 23 in 1977 and saw it for the first time, I loved it; from the opening Crashing Hyper-Music to that little ugly alien smiling at simpleton Dreyfess, I ate it up and drank the Kool-aide.

But time passed and I grew up; for example, where are the alien motivations?? They abduct people and mysteriously return them and that's okay with a smile?? It's all fluff and no guts. It's easy to write B-movie schlock and avoid all the difficult issues; such as, Why are They here? Stephen is no writer, that's a given, but this turkey has not stood the test of time. And they re-released it in 1980 so you could go "inside" the mother ship...and it was a bunch of colored lights!! Again, zero intellect and I'm out.

One of the Best American summer movies of all Time
22 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Not an understatement. This film portrays Little League and southern Cal summer life to a T. It's dirty, real, and hilarious. Matthau is brilliant and Tatum his equal. Every part is perfection and the direction flawless. Probably wouldn't be made today; not PC! I enjoyed every moment, and cried at the scene where poor Tatum hides her feelings and walks away wiping away her tears. And the musical score! Who wound have thought Bizet's Carmen would work here! But it does!

But it does have One Redeeming quality!
9 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
It stinks; one of the worst films of the year. BUT when Sandler gets piqued and starts stammering and charges the line and goes full-blown Lawrence Taylor, it really transcends all the terribleness...because that's funny and comedy gold! That single scene (repeated over and over), elevates this tepid, amateurish comedy to Mount Olympus. You go, Adam! You go.

"Dances with Wolves" goes to 19th century Japan
4 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
It's not bad. Entertaining with great photography and performances. Battle scenes are not Kurosawa, but, hey, what is? I liked many elements including great detail about Japan turning Western and the old vs new conflicts therein. Enjoy!

All time heart-warmer & charmer
29 May 2021
There are moments where the poignancy, entertainment, and sheer joy transcend the scene. Timeless themes and emotions dripping in sweet family values and love occur quite frequently. It's genuine. Locations that can't be beat, add to overall musical Heaven. There's a reason why audiences all over the world adore this film. To touch someone's heart is not an easy thing to do. TSOM achieves this like a bouncing tennis ball, over and over again.

Out of Africa (1985)

One of the decade's Best!
18 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This film is about many things: the hypnotic beauty of Africa, a strong modern woman asserting herself in a man's suffocating world, an interwoven love triangle of convenience, European imperialism (which was not all bad by the way), culture clash (19th century Danes and English and primitive hunter gatherers), man (or woman) vs nature (best scene is Streep's character using a whip to fend off lions and she succeeds!), technology in animal kingdom (Mozart on phonograph!), and much more.

It's also a timeless Hollywood tale of romance, betrayal, stubbornness, lust (!), and so much more. The cinematography stars, as does Streep's performance (nuanced, mezmorizing, transcendent), She is at her most beautiful here. Redford her male equal.

It's a glamorized view of Kenya; soft beauty, mysterious, and dangerous.

The local African tribe is worth spending time with this film alone. There are so many touching, sublime moments; the boy's leg healing, local kids placing their hands into Streep's pocket for candy, the tribal king ordering no school for children above a certain height, and many more. Klaus Maria Brandauer is excellent as is the entire supporting cast.

For me, this film is not to be missed.

Of course, there are things that trouble me; Redford's character behaves immaturely and moves in with a married woman. What, no morals? Situational ethics?

No matter.

There are many messages throughout: interracial liaisons, prejudice, the foolishness of war, freedom of the mind and spirit, the evils of materialism, unspoiled nature spoiled, and others.

And let's not forget the musical score, predating Kevin Costner's Dances with Wolves fantastic score!

All in all, a great adventure film with a female protagonist battling for respect and equality in a very unequal world.9 The best films transport us to another time and place. This is one of the best.

Sergeant York (1941)
10/10
One of the Best American films Ever!
26 March 2021
A bit dated, cliched, old-fashioned, and I Love it! Propaganda, sure, but what's wrong with that when it's a thinly-veiled attack (pro-war) against the stinking Nazi's! Coop is terrific, and so is the entire cast. Hawks the director and co-writer didn't make the characters "hillbillies." They're real people, as are all the emotions and inner conflict of the main character, sergeant Alvin York. A real American film where right wins out, but not without conflict and uneasiness (follow the Bible and not murder or support your country in war). Top grosser of 1942, and deservedly so. One of my all-time favorites. P. S. Read York's diary from WWI, it's online. Hoho!

Great Actioner, Finale one of best!
23 March 2021
Great period piece; well-produced and historically accurate. The horses are the stars and why not? Throughly enjoyable on many levels. The final charge is well directed and exciting. I love it when a film highlights a bit of history I've never heard of - apparently a battle of legend in Australia.

Rousing, fictional tale, but Charge did happen!
25 February 2021
Firstly, 25 horses died while filming not 200; but, some of you would squawk if it was one... Historically, 335 horses died with 278 human casualties (156 killed or missing). But it's Great entertainment to make money at the box office - duh!

And it was 700 horsemen not 600, but that's the number in the famous poem.

It's the best "Army Man" movie ever made
29 January 2021
My pals and I grew up in southern Cal during the late 50s and early 60s playing Army man, and we killed many German enemies. This film is epic and extremely well-made, and the best army man movie ever made, but it's not flawless (what film is?). For one, Tom Hanks is the main character, obviously not Private Ryan. But the writers kill off Tom and let Ryan walk away.... one of the reasons it lost for Best Picture in my humble opinion. I'm not sure Spielberg even know this, but no mater. It's still an excellent depict of buddy war! And Buddy movies are high on everyone's entertainment lists!

Top 100 of All Time!
24 October 2020
It used to be that GD was always on Top 100 films List of all time without question. You think Raiders by Lucas is better? I cried at the end of GD! Timeless epic of bravery, noble savage (!), camaraderie, humor, and male bravado! "You want me to run out on my friends? That's not me! I'm a man! Let's go!" Paraphrased. Great entertainment upon which all future Action films are based! George Stevens!

Doesn't Get Much Better than This
15 March 2020
In my book, it's a 10; great writing (crisp, funny, moving), inspired acting by Streep and all, fine direction (doesn't get in the way and displays even-handedness) plus it's topical and super entertaining! What more do you want? It's not a "chick flick" because it can speak to anybody; uplifting and insightful, timeless themes, such as the power of confidence (swings both ways, good and bad), standing up for yourself and just being yourself despite the flack, and basically retelling the ugly duckling story with a twist. I feel like I learned something, too; what it means to be a winner, how circumstances can change a person but with the help of friends change can happen and not ultimately be one's downfall... Rich here, out.

Classic depression-era comedy/trag
30 November 2019
Preston Sturgess is able to deftly mix comedy, tragedy, and social commentary into an outing of adventure and pathos. It really hits home on so many levels; modern-day insight, belly laughs, sex appeal, compassion, and all with a great moral and timeless ending. One of the finest Hollywood-factory productions ever. And look at the world today; sadly many things have not changed!

Hated it then; hate it now.
27 July 2019
I saw this dog when it first came out. During the opening scenes on Hoth, I turned to my friend, and said, "Get me in space!" Running around Antarctica with Yeti, was the worse. Billy Dee Williams is a joke. The smouldering love interest between Solo and Leia pathetic; everyone knows Luke loves her (oops, Lucas made her HIS SISTER after the success of I (Oh, excuse me IV). Oy vay! 5 stars for Special Effects, sound, and effort. Folks, the 1977 original was nominated for Best Picture! Lucas said everything he wanted to say in it! Sequels are made for one reason; filthy lucre.

Guys, it was once a Top 100 Film!
22 November 2018
Many years ago this poignant film found its way onto several Top 100 films of all time...how times have changed! BTW Gunga Din has fallen off these lists as well...sad but true.

Paul M. Is considered to be one of America's finest filmmakers so be careful criticizing him...(try writing a romantic comedy and you'll see what I mean).

Great entertainment but predictable
22 June 2018
It's all in the execution; great stunts, supporting cast (Piccolo in particular), beautiful maids-in-waiting, and a Max Steiner score. I saw it as a boy on TV in B/W, and loved it. I still do.
