Surviving Lunch (2019)
Important issue, good message, definitely worth watching
I just watched this as part of a national training for school psychologists. It was definitely too intense for tweens and any teenagers who may have experienced similar violence, bullying, and assault. There were some awkward acting moments somewhat related to the script and a possibly less experienced cast and crew.
If you look at what the movie was intended for (educating and persuading adults) you can overlook the flaws. It was much higher quality than a TV after-school special, but definitely lower budget. It should inspire all community members to advocate for more mental health services in schools. It also reminds us that bullying behavior is often complex and not a simple issue.
It would help if schools provided better supervision of ALL school areas and improve how they teach and encourage student bystanders to stand up to protect, or at least report what they hear and see. Sadly, we also have adult educators, administrators, and community members who are complicit in the bullying by their inappropriate language/behaviors, inaction or careless indifference.
I would recommend watching this and working in your community with your schools to effectively address the traumatic experiences of "hurt" children (victims and some bully-victims).
Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
Not what it's advertised to be - too slow
I try to not watch all the previews and information about a movie before I see it, and that backfired this time. I should have looked closer at the reviews and realized I'd hate this movie. There were moments that were good, but in general the movie moved soo slowly that it was difficult to stay involved. The incredibly loud blaring low tones were also just annoying after a while and became another reason that I didn't enjoy the experience. Just be warned that you should read the reviews and know what you're getting yourself into. I won't make that mistake again.
TWA Flight 800 (2013)
Watch this and decide for yourself
Thank you to the courageous Americans who are putting their reputation on the line to bring up the lies we were told about TWA flight 800. Watch out for "reviewers" who attack the documentary with the intent to discourage people from watching it and coming to their own conclusions. I recall watching a retired Air Force Pilot who went on CSPAN debunk this "center fuel tank explosion" theory years ago, and he was a credible as any person I've listened to. That was when I first realized (sadly I admit) that our government lies to us and that they cannot be trusted. I am a psychologist and I'm frightened at how psychology was referenced by the government to imply that eye witness testimony is so unreliable as a means to discredit hundreds of eye witnesses to what was a very basic event (little details to get mixed up). Listen to the eye witnesses in this documentary and see for yourself if they seem credible. I've watched lots of documentaries and I don't often agree with them because I think they don't provide all of the details or distort the facts. I also look for who has an agenda to push. I see no ulterior motives with those who are interviewed for this movie. I just recommend that you watch it for yourself, and if it's your first exposure to how easily our government lies to its citizens, be prepared to be discouraged (and hopefully motivated to make some changes).
Surveillance (2008)
Horribly violent without purpose
I so wish I had taken the time to read the reviews here before I traumatized myself by watching this garbage. I thought that because it had some recognizable actors/actresses in it, it would have some redeeming qualities. At first, it catches your attention, because you're not exactly sure of what you're seeing. The format of showing flashbacks to previous events was used, but you were never sure of what was going on. I knew from the description that it was the point of view of three different witnesses, so I was expecting some confusion. What I wasn't expecting was how violent it turned, and without any purpose. I can handle violence if it is part of a story that makes sense, but this was too much. Then it ended as poorly as I was expecting, leaving a bitter taste for my time wasted. It actually left me feeling violated. I hope that his review will prevent somebody else from being abused by watching this trash. I have seen literally thousands of movies that are so much better than this. I'm actually shocked that somebody paid to make this movie. Bill Pullman needs to fire his agent and show better judgment in the movie roles he takes.
Funny Games (2007)
Horrible
I apologize that I didn't rate this movie earlier to warn people. I often don't write ratings because I wouldn't consider myself an expert on movies and often realize that a movie I don't like, others may find appealing. I saw this originally at the Sundance Film Festival and if I hadn't been in the middle of a long row, I would have definitely walked out. I've never seen such shocking violence combined with such bad acting. The two boys who play the bad characters aren't just bad at acting, I found them incredibly annoying to have to watch. Over the years I've seen a lot of bad movies, but I can only think of one that was worse than this. Trust people when you see a lot of low ratings. You've been warned.
High School Musical (2006)
Horrible, Sappy, Poorly Acted, Bland Music, and Boring!
Please, take a moment and read the many bad reviews (skip the "awesome movie" reviews by 9 year old girls) this movie has received before you cringe through this film. You have been officially warned. The only reason to show this movie to children would be to contrast it against quality films that have good acting, good music, some substance, and are entertaining. I'm embarrassed that this was filmed in Utah. I seem to find that if the reviews for a movie are all 1's and 10's, then it's usually a movie I regret renting. Renting this was a waste of money, but it did convince me to check out reviews on any movie that I'm going to rent to avoid films of this low quality. The sad thing is that I generally enjoy musicals and have a high tolerance for bad films (I've seen plenty of bad films at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City Utah), but this was bad in a whole different way.
