Ancient Aliens (2009)
Eurocentric Prejudice Against Non-European Civilizations
Another example of Eurocentric prejudice belittling anything great that came from outside Europe.
Ancient Aliens is a show featuring a few uncredible psydoscientists telling the audience ridiculous unproven myths on the "History" Channel.
The show is not unharmful entertainment. It is quite sinister for stripping the people whose ancestors built great ancient civilizations from their achievements
Claiming that Egyptians, Mayans, Indians and Incans could not have possibly built anything by themselves and that more superior beings descended on Earth to do the work for them is very offensive.
Does the show ever attribute European achievements to aliens? Of course not.
El Naser Salah el Dine (1963)
Must-see for anyone interested in history
The movie accurately demonstrates the true story behind the crusades and their attacks on the middle east. Salah El-Din leads the Egyptian armies to face the 3rd Crusade and recapture Palestine for the Arabs.
The good thing about this movie is its decent fighting sequences and special effects bearing in mind that it was produced in 1963. It also gives a good insight about Salah El Din who is known to the west as one of history's most noble kings. In the movie, the plot shows that Salah El Din too had a great deal of respect for Richard Lionheart of England.
One more interesting point is that the movie shows that Arab Christians were in fact suffering from the crusades and some of them fought side-by-side with the Muslims to defeat the crusaders; this is actually historically documented.
The 13th Warrior (1999)
Great fiction movie
Although not promoted enough, this movie is excellent. If you like old-style thrillers such as Sleepy Hollow, you will love this one. The films also has a comedic side to it, which makes it more amusing. Antonio Banderas is very convincing in this role and so is the rest of the cast. Omar Al-Sharif also guest stars at the beginning of the movie for a few scenes, but as always, he adds more weight to the movie.
The most brilliant part in the film is how the director showed Ahmad Ibn Fadlan picking up the nordic language of the vikings, gradually. This is definitely original and very smart. In a nutshell, you either like this movie or you don't, I do and so do most of the people who told me they've seen it.
Snatch (2000)
An example of artistic directing
The brilliance of this movie lies in the directing technique by Guy Richie.
The real stars are: 1)Camera movement 2)The Fast Pace of the story 3)Time Morphing (you see an event then after a while you know how it happened).
It is a very amusing-to-watch gang story, that combines action & witty comedy that you see rather than hear.
Brilliant performance by everyone and it is great that someone like Brad Pitt comes for a small but excellent role.
The film is quite popular in Egypt though it was never released in the cinema.
Fight Club (1999)
Mystery, Action & Drama in one unique mix.
Fight Club is definitely one of the best movies of all time. The story is so good and the on-screen outcome is executed dynamically that you feel you are actually inside the movie seeing things for yourself. The basic idea behind the film is that one is only a loser because he/she doesn't tap into their abilities and take some positive steps in their life.
The 3 main characters are so colorful and well-performed so that you believe them completely. What makes the movie unique is the amount of energy you see on-screen and the shocking events that keep the movie's pace very entertaining and interesting.
This film has inspired so many people, I hear some crazy people started Fight Clubs after they watched it.
Goodfellas (1990)
Major Disappointment
The movie is an insight into mafia life. It shows you the different characters a gangster could be rather than the "so cool" impression you can get from a film like "Analyze This".
The performances are all excellent, but the movie lacks a solid plot - there is no story to follow or anything to want you want to continue watching. I basically kept watching to see if anything cool would happen last minute or something.
Not impressive at all, I am actually surprised it was on the list. I would say, watch The God Father again or The Sopranos and don't waste your time.
