The Gentlemen (2019)
Its like a party....
Think about a party that you remember from when you were younger. Lets call this party, lock-stock-and-two-smoking-barrels. Well, lock-stock-and-two-smoking-barrels was awesome. It was one of those parties that your friends talk about for years. Everybody looked amazing. The 'remember that time they did {something crazy}' party for that specific group of people. It lives in your memory as this epic adventure, maybe you met somebody special there, or you reconnected with them. Now, twenty years on, you call all of those people that you shared the lock-stock-and-two-smoking-barrels party with and organize another party. Now though, its in somebody's backyard. Its boozy, and maybe even fun. But its not lock-stock-and-two-smoking-barrels. Everybody still looks OK, just larger than you remembered and with money. That person that did that crazy thing that time now sells real estate. That special somebody just had kid #3. This party is catered, and pleasant enough.
But in the end its pointless, and a little dull.
That party? That party is this movie.
Yes Day (2021)
It's a dumb kids movie, and it's great.
I'm laughing at everybody upset about the contrived plot and dumb jokes. It's a family movie, intended to be silly, not something competing for a Palme d'Ore. Maybe if you're watching a Netflix movie where the premise is parents have to say yes to everything their preteen kids want to do you should dial back your expectations about the plot? Did you watch Kindergarten Cop and get upset that Ahnold didn't have a teaching certificate? It's stupid, it's fun, get together with your kids and enjoy it.
The Conners (2018)
It's network TV but we'll done and a lot more "real" than most shows.
I'm not sure what other reviews expected, network TV isn't 'great' by definition. But this site has that working class plot of the old show without the shrill bark of Roseanne. But the current season about struggling during COVID is surprisingly well written and fun.
Romeo + Juliet (1996)
Fair Verona, dystopic paradise
I'd forgotten after all these years just how great this version is. Shakespeare wrote for the masses and this was in a classic 90's style.
Booksmart (2019)
Its like a surreal Fast Times at Ridgemont High
A great coming age grad night film but very abstract. The crazy high school, the fantasy bits and fast pacing probably put some people off but I thought it was one of the most creative things I have seen in a long time.
