Dr. Prakash Baba Amte - The Real Hero (2014)
Misogynist towards Mandatai
The movie starts with Nana Patekar emerging out of the river with a very CGI tiger. This might have worked if there were no other animals in the movie. But since there were 2 leopards, multiple monkeys, a bear, multiple snakes, one wonders why couldn't they have used a real leopard instead of the CGI tiger. The movie is very misogynist towards Mandatai. In one scene, Mandatai, who is a trained doctor herself, asks Dr Amte to verify that a child has fever and then asks what should she do. There are many other such scenes which portray mandatai in a bad light. In reality, the altruistic task of Dr Amtes would not have even started, let alone bear fruition without Mandatai.
Nana Patekar shines in his portrayal of Dr Amte. Few scenes here and there do show that the director might be talented. For instance, after Dr Amte's beloved leopard Negal dies, the Amtes plant a tree at the spot where the leopard is buried. Nana later walks past the tree and nuzzles the tree.
The task undertaken by the Amtes is beyond doubt unparalleled. The movie could have done better justice to the Amtes. 10 votes on 10 for Nana Patekar. Minus 5 for bad direction, non fact checking, and the disparaging attitude towards Mandatai.
Juno (2007)
Horrible movie - who even nominated it!
Spoiler alert. The trailer itself is so bad - who goes and blabbers about her pregnancy test in front of a random shop owner? I should have steered clear of the movie right after watching the trailer. But I wanted to see the movie and write its review. 1. The parents come to know that the daughter is pregnant and take it as coolly as if she lost a pair of jeans. The parents don't even raise their voice, yell at the daughter, hit her, but yeah the mom suggests that she get started on vitamins. Eww, be realistic guys. At least do some research, ask around, ask other teenage moms how their parents reacted! 2. Every character in the movie is so rude. Forget about Juno, her mom bashes out at the Ultrasound technician and as Juno puts it - verbally abuses her. Really we need to stop glorifying this. 3. In Juno's world, it is perfectly acceptable to hit on a married man. Even when her mom has warned her. Or even after the guy gives the 1st indication - all those cringe-worthy dialogues about how Zeus's wife Juno was beautiful, and then the guy says the name suits her. Overall eww.. its a lesson not to mess up with pretty serious topics just to make a so-called comedy film.
First Generation (2011)
Could have been better
For someone who hails from a well-to-do family in a developing country, I could not relate to the movie. I understand that life is difficult, but I don't understand how can someone choose to pay for a car and its insurance and then say at the end of the movie that she dint apply to a university because of a 50$ application form! Neither can I understand how can a student dream of being a doctor without taking enough Core Science courses!
Of the 4 students, I liked the story of Cecilia a lot. An underlying message through all the 4 stories is that if you want your kids to excel in life, the atmosphere at home should be conducive for it. For Cecilia, this encouragement and support came through her best friend's family, which was heartening. After the screening at our University, we got to interact with Cecilia via Skype.
The documentary highlights the need of a career counselor in the high schools, and students should be made aware of the scholarships and opportunities that are out there. The documentary can be a baby step to achieve Goal 2025, but there still a lot that needs to be done.
