I saw this popular crime movie back in the 90s and like many others, found it cool at first, especially thanks to the characters and Snipes, but even then something bothered me and has gotten in the way every time I re-watch it, and it is a fatal flaw:
The crime aspect makes zero sense. This crime lord literally puts all his eggs in one easy-to-find basket. There's a simple reason why drug dealers have a distributed network, separating payments from the drugs, and the lab from the distribution, and having many backups and layers of separation, etc. That's because cops can take down any part of this network just by witnessing a crime taking place, and you don't want your whole criminal venture going down along with one single outlet. What is the 'genius' in having your expensive lab, factory, and accounting, and a single source for all your drugs, all potentially get taken down by any single drug addict picking up his little bottle? It's idiotic.
Yes, they had lookouts, and a security system, and even 'hostages', but that's not going to stop the police obviously, it will only give them a way to evade the law and possibly escape, though even escape seems impossible since they would get surrounded. Which means that they may not get put in jail, but 100% of their business goes down as soon as the police barge in. Plus, if every drug addict knows where this building is, the outcome is inevitable. And that's exactly what happened: It was the flimsiest and most idiotic criminal empire I've ever seen. Why did everyone call this a 'genius' plan in the movie?
Also, the head-on approach to clashing with the Italian mob never makes sense either. Many compare this movie to Scarface and his ego and power getting in the way of his business sense, but that was miles more subtle and it took a while for his empire to fall apart, and as soon as he crossed powers stronger than he was, he was taken out instantly. Here, the Italians could have bombed the whole Carter building in one day, and once again, he would have been out of business immediately. Instead, they get into a machine gun battle with only two or three mobsters. They lose, and then give up. Yeah right.
Like I said, Snipes was cool, and Chris Rock was surprisingly good instead of the usual obnoxious comic relief, and the movie had style with colorful dialog and characters, and a wild law enforcement side to the story (not just gangs fighting each other), but the nonsensical criminal side just ruins it.
