Shane Dawson TV (2008)
Easy to Summarize
1. Misleading video still 2. Misleading video title (often geared for sexclicks) 3. Short video that says nothing funny, interesting, or of value 4. ??? 5. Partnership
Seriously, this show is unfunny. Please don't watch it, or any of the other YouTubeWhores like iJustine or sxephil. They all just want to be famous, and make things of much lower quality than the average user. Evaluating purely on comedy, there's really nothing here. Certainly nothing that needed thought to write. I don't know how this got such a high rating. People should stick with real comedy, real entertainment, not some idiots who know how to use jumpcuts. This show is laziness at its purest and receives most of its views through titles and thumbnails that have nothing to do with the video. This violates YouTube's terms of service, but wait, lol, he's a partner! Rules need not apply!
Date Movie (2006)
Great for immature teens like me.
This movie features a gag where a cat sits on a toilet for over a minute while disgusting noises play.
I laughed hysterically at this. For the whole scene.
This movie is good for the immature-at-heart. Anyone looking for real satire should look elsewhere. A few stretches aren't funny, but enough made me laugh to give this an 8/10.
That's really all I can say about the humor. The production quality, acting, and music are all right, though nothing special.
Most of the best gags are visual. I don't think the writers know much about verbal comedy.
Computer haekjeonham pokpa daejakjeon (1983)
Among the worst things I have ever seen
Ah, Asian cartoons. So many people think they are the best thing ever, and so many others despise them. Of course, like western animation, there are both good and bad productions. This is possibly the worst.
STORY: Hero Guy, Bland Girl, and Professor Science all get sucked into a video game. Inside, they encounter the Villain (Vampire?) Guy, who plans to take over the world. At first, our heroes are trapped in the villains' base, being forced to compete with each other. After escaping, they wander around for a while, and Hero Guy meets a 2 foot tall robot chick who has a crush on him. She's supposedly a bad guy but ends up on the good side. Anyway, they all destroy the Big Bad and return to the normal world. Oh, and there's a black guy named, uh... Black John. Who has giant lips. I guess there aren't enough black people in Korea for them to care. Overall, it's an OK plot for a sci-fi fantasy. However, it is definitely a ripoff of "Tron." (8/20)
CHARACTERS: Nothing further to say after that. They have no personality, so this section stays mostly empty. I'm not exaggerating either, they could swap the lines of two characters regularly, and I'd never know. (0/20)
ANIMATION: The art is OK, if a bit bland (and ripping off Tron's visual style). The frame rate is average for a Japanese or Korean cartoon, that is, somewhat lower than in America. Voices don't match lip sync at all, but it's a dub so I won't fault it for that. Action is all right, though the animators don't like drawing it, and like to avoid doing so. Not too much to complain about here, but nothing really good.. (10/20)
SOUND: All the voices seem to be done by the same two people, one male, and one female. They don't vary their voices at all, they use crappy recording equipment, and they know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about acting. Not any emotion either. I don't think they even read the script before recording. This is possibly the worst aspect of the whole thing. Again, it's a dub, but this is just pathetic! Imagine a third grade play where no one knows their lines and they don't act at all. Fortunately, you can rage at this without any hurt feelings. Also, the opening titles literally steal a few bars of Star Wars music. (0/20)
ENTERTAINMENT: Not quite entertaining, even from badness. The film moves very slowly, has lots of segues from the story that we don't care about, no characterization, and the worst audio ever. Luckily, there is a MST-style version available ("It Came From Public Domain"), which makes it watchable. (0/20)
EXTRA (added or subtracted from final score): Black John: -5 Voice Acting: -10 Pac-Man as one game the slaves have to play: +5
OVERALL: 1/10
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009)
A GREAT FILM (Just don't take it too seriously).
Well, what can I say? I turned this movie on mostly to laugh at it, but I found myself laughing with it. It falls into the "delightful cheese" category I enjoy a lot. If this movie took itself seriously it would be just another crappy action movie. Hell, I hate most movies of this kind (especially Transformers). This however, entertains from start to finish. It doesn't waste much time on filler or waste time before getting started. By the way, unlike some modern PG13 movies, this one is definitely suitable for pretty much all ages.
The plot is basically an excuse one. Tough soldier Duke and his wannabe pilot friend end up joining a secret organization called GI Joe to fight international terrorism. The evil MARS Corporation wants to wreak havoc so that people will turn to the most powerful man in the world, who they wish to control. Duke's ex-fiancé, a ninja, and the future Cobra Commander attempt to attack various major cities, and the Joes have to save the day.
A couple interesting notes: 1. Again, this is not a serious movie. Among other things, the line "knowing is half the battle" actually turns up. Some things are really intentionally ridiculous, like a quadruple crossbow with homing explosive arrows and four laser sights. In fact, the best two words to describe the style of the movie is "crazy awesome." A perfect mix of awesome things until they become hilarious. If you are 9 you'll be enthralled, but otherwise please treat this as a comedy. The film is also heavy on homages to other movies, watch out for the black mask being lowered on Cobra Commander's head. 2. This movie bears a striking resemblance to the satirical "Team America: World Police." If you watch that movie as well, you'l have even more fun.
The Terminators (2009)
The Asylum's getting better!
Well, it's another knockoff from the Asylum, the guys who brought us Transmorphers, Alien vs Hunter, and Snakes on a Train, as well as a bunch of monster movies that aren't stolen from anything. So is this a good movie? Surprisingly, I say yes. The script is as good as any mindless action flick, the cinematography isn't bad (except during one of the fight scenes), the TR robots seem at least a little menacing (come on, pulling someone's jaw off is totally bad-ass) and the special effects are decent. The main hints their budget was short were only that most of the TRs look human and they avoid lengthy CGI scenes. When CG does appear, it's pretty good (at least as it appears on my laptop screen). A big step up from Transmorphers, which looked horrible. Also, I thought it was cool that some shots featured multiple human TRs at once, proving they had the budget to "clone" and actor. In terms of story, it's pretty average but it can genuinely surprise you. Many characters die without me seeing it coming, emphasizing how there are now evil robots EVERYWHERE. Also I expected Mysterious Guy to turn out to be a TR but he wasn't! In fact (spoiler) the Sheriff is! Another good thing is the makeup and set design. I never went "this looks fake" except in one scene at the very start, and the continuity of how characters look is good (for example if you have blood on your face, it's there for the rest of the movie). Also, I find everyone getting bloodier over the movie actually adds to the tension. The acting is all right for it's budget (with exceptions).
So anyway, the story: (such as it is)
A few years into the future, robots called TRs do most of our work. For No Reason Ever Given, they rebel. Some characters blame terrorists, but we never find out. So anyway, a small town sheriff, a woman, the woman her husband cheated with, some angry guy, a few expendable characters, and Mysterious Guy have to escape their town and help shut down the TRs from a space station (because Mysterious Guy knows how).
So in the end, God help me, I liked this. It avoids the Asylum pitfalls of boring dialog and horrible CGI, and they managed to pull off a fun but forgettable sci-fi action movie.
Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi (2001)
Weird, weird, weird
Remember when you were in elementary school? And every once in a while you'd get to see some movie on a Friday or something? And it seems OK at the time? And years later you hear about it again and realize it sucked? This is that movie.
Summary: Some girl and her parents get sucked into Spirit world. The parents F up and are turned into pigs. Then the girl gets into weird situations and eventually she gets her parents back (not marking spoiler because it's a kids movie and you know it will turn out OK.) This movie will RAPE your brain. It is a loose collection of strange and random scenes. While many aspects of the movie are OK, this is just TOO WEIRD. If I were you, I would only watch this while drunk or high.
Starship Troopers (1997)
A War Movie. With future Nazis, aliens, and tactical nukes.
Summary: Johnny Rico, a citizen of the militaristic and fascist Federation, joins the military because his girlfriend Carmen does. Soldiers are needed because of a war with alien Bugs. After a lot of filler, they land on the home planet of the Bugs and from then it's a war movie. As the story progresses, new and more powerful Bugs appear, and they take forever to die, and then someone kills them. The End. So why is this a good movie?
Well, the disturbing thing about this movie(this was intentional) is that while the humans are Nazi-ish and brainwashed by propaganda, they're just normal people. They are not evil, it's their society that is. You care about the characters. At the end, they discover that at least some of the Bugs can feel emotion. "It's afraid!" "YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYY!!!" So in the end, this is a movie about war and its effect on people. In this case, they are Nazis. You root for them, and you feel sorry for them. Kind of like how I cheered for the humans in Avatar.
