La sociedad de la nieve (2023)
Excelente producción
What I liked the most about this film was the intimate approach given to the lives of these unfortunate fighters who demonstrated a will that each one of us, humans, carry inside, and the fight that we are able to give when the misfortune knocks our doors. Great performances and nice cinematography, plus beautiful and delicate editing makes the whole film a true deserver of global recognition. The rhythm seems slow sometimes but it is jusitified because of the dramatic sequence of events that took place in real life. I would have liked more realistic references to the factual story, but nonetheless, all the sequences are worth the story and the message that it entails. Good job!
The Beekeeper (2024)
How can our reality lead us to this ridicule?
It's so basic trying to link the news with a plot so silly, that it's even funny; but nevertheless, this is a horrid film production. In align with that, it's worth mentioning limited acting, a terrible script and zero cinematographic intentions to make a good movie. Please keep Jason Statham away from the cameras for the upcoming years until he's retired unless he decides to compromise with his job. On the other hand, Jeremy Irons: shame on you for accepting being part of such a stupid story. I guess the writers were trying to create a mediocre copy of Jonh Wick, but without giving it too much thought. Finally, let's not allow that Emmy Raver-Lampman work in a film again, or, is the script to blame for her total unrealistic performance? This film has too many flaws to be depicted in a single review, but it was awful and a complete waste of time.
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019)
Impressive accounting of a special character
This is a great story about a human character and his way to show love for other people. This kind of films are hard to find and I thank the people involved because stories like these are important to discover valuable lessons based on expereinces we hardly talk about, with an interesting perspective for the feelings we keep inside our hearts. I have to say that while watching the movie, I never felt disappointed about any if the scenes and the subjects at discussion, for they were all presented through a realistic scope of incidents that we normally don't take the time to acknowledge. Kudos to Tom Hanks and the rest of the crew who conveyed a beautiful mesage of love and dedication for others.
The Whale (2022)
Dramatic and Empatheticc
This film is a formidable testimony of the loneliness that we all carry inside and in particular of the people who suffer from tragedies caused by letting ourselves be carried away by the passion that clouds our minds at certain moments in our lives, whether it is due to the death of a loved one , the distance from those we love, the betrayals, and the sadness of being different in a world that imposes the criteria of the majority.
The performances are simply stupendous and should cause the recognition of the Academy. The drama perceived in a dense atmosphere of fatality that will trigger the most hidden emotions of the protagonists. I am very satisfied with the level of histrionics exhibited by Brendan Fraser, which brings tears to the most indifferent.
With many high-quality artistic elements, THE WHALE will go down in film history as an outstanding effort in directing, visual effects, scripting, and most of all, acting.
Los Reyes Magos: La Verdad (2022)
Hilarious and sensitive vision of a beloved Spanish traditionion
I found really interesting the way that this film presents the audience the topic of modernity versus tradition through the lens of three humans who have lived 2,000 years. I especially liked the human angle how THE THREE MAGIC KINGS present their reality with decent performances from the cast. The story is hilariously told by the kings themselves and their frantic public relations person, who brings her daughter to work just to open the eys of their majesties at the right time to make the right decision.
Kudos to this great assemble that puts together most of necessary elements for a decent film. Kudos to the soundtrack and edition.
Spirited (2022)
Nice story but a little unfit
The music of this movie sounds about right, along with the performances and the jokes. It's close to be a good movie, but not quite. There's definitely something missing and I think it's in the story, with too many loose ends. Maybe it's just the length of the film or the dancing, not sure though. There are some great scenes and Will Ferrell has some good moments too. The director could have taken more advantage of the cast and avoided excesive singing, for example with Octavia Spencer or Ryan Reynolds. It's likely that the overall message of the movie works well in saving the insufferable scenes that remain throughout the plot.
Blonde (2022)
True possible reality
Watching Ana De Armas playing Marilyn Monroe is spectacular for many reasons, but mostly due to the fact that this idol was characterized in a very possible and brutal way. All the scenes were possible and naturally, the reaction of this human being should have gone the way that was portrayed by the main actor of the film: tormented, disoriented and completely disengaged with reality. Norma Jean was indeed a different person than Marilyn. Kudos to director, cinematographer and score creators.
This is one of the most honest ffilms I've ever watcched and only for this reason you should be tempted to wacth too.
IMDb on the Scene - Interviews: Elvis (2022)
Reminiscence of a legend
I really liked the perforrmance of Austin Butler as well as Tom Hanks' transformation of Colonel Parker. I think the stylished language of the film was also special and even though it's not the biographical movie we would come to expect, it throws an alternative version of the great artist that Elvis Presley was. The music was electifying and the legacy of the great idol was also respected. In regards to the protagonism of Colonel Parker, I found it a little too far from the expectations that most of the audience would have. I just wish that we'd have another more intimate movie about the king of rock'n'roll soon.
Being the Ricardos (2021)
Magnificently presented
I was impressed with the staging of this movie, mainly due to the rhythm and scripting. The acting was a plus and the story is really fantastic.
I don't know how much of the story is accurate but kudos to the way these facts were all put together. Javier's performance was outstanding as well as Nicole Kidman's. The rest were also impecable.
Good filming!
Notorious (1946)
Big star constellation
Having Ingrid Bergman alone is such a delicious treat, but when that is combined with superb performances and directing, it's a plus. Quite a story and great ending. I only didn"t like the music... nor the kisses.
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
In spite of troubles on its way...
I thought the movie was not going to manage to make it to the end in a decent manner. But, the last 30 minutes or so proved me wrong. Not that the acting had gotten any better, but somehow, the story found the way out.
I was still disappointed though.
Enola Holmes (2020)
A Sherlock Holmes movie tarnished by himself
The good work done by MBB and HBC plus other veteran actors should have deserved better. But with a script seeming to have no direction and poor (horrendous) performance of Henry Cavill, I should say, this movie was a waste of energy. His presence was most of all, the regretful part of the story. So many good edges that it could have pivoted but the movie had an unfortunate director making wrong choices while following a disoriented script. I felt disappointed after initial expectations for an original good idea that in the end took the wrong pathway.
Up in the Air (2009)
Outstanding Performances for an Original Story
I was impressed with Anna Kendrick's display of emotions and sense of identification with the character of an ambitious, workaholic, young business counselor who is trying to demonstrate her new proposed methods to fire people in a specialized company of labor contract's terminations. And the professional and emotional confrontation with the experienced field man who doesn't agree with her ideas but who will have to teach her if he wants to remain in his position and not end on "the other side of the desk". The opposed perspectives to life and values from both characters enriches the story with delightful dialogs and situations.
George Clooney evolves from his ever-played role of successful- rich guy, providing this time a thoughtful performance that reminds me in a way, the sadness expressed by actor Will Smith in the 'Seven Pounds' drama from some time ago. You can feel the emptiness of his existence when he smiles to acknowledge his fortunate up-in-the-air life which has also caused the coldness from his closest family members. Also memorable are the scenes of disappointment after finding out the status of his new like-alike lover or the conversation he had with his soon to be brother in law.
As per Vera Farmiga's adaptation to a similar character of the one played by Clooney, we have to agree on the fact that the acting is the most valuable part of this film along with the originality and prevalence of the topic. Not only fixes well under the current economics' circumstances but delivers a positive message as well, where the attitude towards negative events can help us to find out ways to overcome and strengthen our weaknesses. There were some less interesting shoots and maybe the script concluded a little way too loose from the original point of start, but seeing the complete work, we must admit that was good movie material treated masterfully by its crew.
Precious (2009)
Honest and Proclaiming
This is the kind of story that more movie- makers should be interested in filming, seeing that it presents social and more intimate issues that are happening around us and who knows?, maybe are happening to us, just like the indication text line in the credits which dedicates the movie to all "precious girls out there'. The film utilizes the starring character's experience to show how low humans can fall as victims of marginality and the mechanisms that society can use to prevent or heal these twisted expressions of family relations.
Precious is an abused adolescent who doesn't know about other types of relationships outside those known at home through her mother's frustration and her father's sexual violations; getting to the limit of creating an imaginary world that she confuses with her daily reality of ignorance and media exposure through the television. The constant reprimands from her crack- addict mother and violence from her surroundings, an induced obesity, the fact that she has given birth to a mentally disabled infant from her own father and going forward issues have turned her personality into a gray, sad and hopeless girl at a very young stage of her life.
The film brutally reveals each one of these tragedies as we are immersed in a tight atmosphere accomplished by the great execution of Gabourey Sidibe and Mo'Nique, with other less impacting performances that as whole, works perfect for the type of visual language that director Lee Daniels delivers from a wonderful adapted screenplay that gives origin to this movie. Despite all, there are still some unnecessary parts –like that from nurse character played by rock singer Lenny Kravitz or the lesbian relation Mrs. Rain keeps- which don't really help in the story's construction and are there for some other external reasons.
For the importance of movies like Precious rests in the artistic social proclamation, which is masterly achieved in the course of each one of the dim scenes where the American-way-of-living is denoted with realistic crudeness and far from that glamorous propaganda that consumerism systems conceal for the benefit of the establishment. Indeed a great film, carefully made and honestly played by the production whereas the acting and technical contributions represented a significant value to its overall outcome. No wonder why of its 6 nominations that could actually have been rewarded more than the two statuettes given, I would at least have added Best Motion Picture or Best Performance by an Actress in a leading Role.
The Blind Side (2009)
Nice Movie with Memorable Performance
The best parts of this film are Sandra Bullock's performance -especially when she puts that face with quivering eyes-, Quinton Aaron's (Michael Oher), silent suffering and Jae Head (S.J. Tuohy)-with his funny remarks-. The story is touching and the visuals are more than beautiful.
Other aspects of the movie were also important as long as the well elaborated script reflected a good rhythm and kept interest through the progress of the narrative. Michael's life details are revealed in accordance to the scenes' relations bringing out the drama of his childhood and frustrations from his mother's behavior.
You could dispute the archetypal approach about the afroamerican's way of living but it serves to the story's purpose, which is based on actual facts wherein a white family supported this child's overcome from poverty and hopelessness -it really impressed me Michael's answer to Leigh Ann's comment when setting up his bedroom-.
I watched Meryl Streep's performance which competes against Bullock's at the Oscars and I definitely have to lean toward the latter because of her deliverance showing a human and Cristian approach which enhances a wonderful message regardless the political or classist status./
Julie & Julia (2009)
Good Comedy with Outstanding Streep
liked this film as much as I hated it. The first is true because of Meryl Streep's act and the latter due to several annoying details. Nonetheless, the overall result is a regular comedy that deserved more funny scenes than the few but good ones showed.
Streep's personification is originally crafted making the character appealing and fun, and we could only say something less about Amy Adams' work. Naturally, I detested Chris Messina's character (or was him?) full-mouthed speaking and ever-hungry condition with his overacting performance. The directing appears careful and vivid, with many cinematic resources well used from beginning to end.
The story needed a closer approach to different offered situations but the overall product can be appreciated as good with an added value due to the presence of the three main players, who combined their talent –Streep's by large- to give us an entertaining and well presented movie that at least should be the winner of its nomination.
Invictus (2009)
Deserved a More Refined Treatment
Let's just say that I was expecting much more from this film due to its director and significant theme besides Morgan Freeman's nomination. But I feel disappointed mostly due to the lack of originality and distinction in the visual language: boring shoots, slow edition, poor camera movement, not to mention the lame dialogs or conventional sound.
Freeman indeed finds a role that is just perfect for him, but that could have contributed more to the story than merely to cite some quotes of leadership. But he does a lot with the little he was given, something that could not be achieved by Matt Damon in the same scale.
I think that the film rested on the sports scenes for too long -especially at the end- wasting a precious topic that might have been handled from other perspectives, rather than the single development of the game, just like any teen-oriented commercial movie does. The splendor of the regular Eastwood's films is not shown in this piece of work, limiting its relevance to the historical documentarian value delivered in an unpolished frame.
The Hurt Locker (2008)
Good Selection of Tension Scenes
The most attractive parts of this movie are the different selections of high-tension scenes where director combines the outstanding performances, camera angles and movements with the cinematography and a crafted sound production. Should we mention though, the story developed through the main characters' angles could have been better defined in order to clarify many of the doubts arisen during the plot.
But director Bigelow preferred to explode the action scope bringing out a commercially attractive film, with an implicit socio-political meaning which, unfortunately, lacks of a cultural and journalistic accuracy. Moreover, the overall product may be appreciated as one memorable effort, but never to be this year's Oscar winner.
District 9 (2009)
A Different and Honest Scifi
The only idea of having to deal with unwanted visitors from other planet and having to share our limited resources as long as public opinion is involved is a starting original peak for an underestimated movie which thankfully transcends as some of the most outstanding works in its genre.
The initial documentary treatment and smooth –almost unperceptive- transition to movie language is another helping element for the director's realization. Other highlights include the convincing realistic visual work resulted from the camera operation, costumes and extraordinary make-up along with the creatures.
The film's message and characters profiles can be measured as noteworthy though they could have been better defined, or maybe not, since the director appears to confront the corporation's evil against the human and alien's behaviors of solidarity, loyalty and family love -this is also evident with the intervention of the District Nine's gangsters desperately looking for the essence of power by eating the alien arm.
The acting could have been better weighted if known actors had been cast, but in general, the main performances were convincing enough to keep us interested in watching the development of the story until a possible sequel concludes the unfinished events presented. I consider District 9 a good and different competitor for the Oscar night.
Avatar (2009)
Milestoning Movie With Weak Points
This movie marks a before and after standard in the industry due to its technical value and box-office incomes. The tridimensional and CGI portion in Pandora moon and the love story between Jake and Neytiri, along with the ecological message constitute the best aspects of this milestoning piece of work from director James Cameron.
And then there's the cartoonish, over-clichéd narrative with one- sided character's representation models which hurts imposingly the overall storytelling. I guess that, because Cameron pretended to carry a message that could be understood by masses, he decided to imprint the plot with those easy-to-remember ridiculous dialogs displayed in the first part to explain the main idea of the movie, over which I certainly agree (with other reviews) were completely avoidable and only contributed to extend the length of the film unnecessarily.
But the creatures, the avatars and Pandora's surfaces were indeed overwhelming components that make the viewer submerge in this fantastic and realistic version of the future awaiting us if we don't change our destroying ambition of controlling nature. There has been a lot of jive about the script's originality, but it doesn't really matter when a same story is told differently
and indeed this is the most different you can get.
I'm not saying the movie is perfect –far from the true- whereas the long time invested in presenting the technical wonders of the cinematography contrasts with the urgency to finish the plot with a happy and predictable ending (that leaves the doors open to upcoming sequels, already announced.)
In addition to the weaknesses in the montage, script and loose ends throughout the story, there's the untalented performance from most of the main players -with the exception of the main avatars helped with the most advanced CIG techniques formulated in the making. The 3D also achieves an important aspiration for the studios as it enhances the theatrical experience (but exclusively offered and enjoyed by movie-goers) thus knocking the piratial damage to the industry. Maybe, this is a good reason for Avatar to be considered as favorite in the Awards.
PS: As I add this note, The Hurt Locker was chosen as Best Movie of 2009 along with other five awards leaving Avatar with only three awards and Inglorious Basterds with two. According to comments, Avatar was not really the great contender to beat on the best motion picture category; it was Inglorious Basterds instead.
