Awesome Film
23 May 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I had to live in a state institution for the physically disabled in the 1980s and this film was a favorite of my fellow 'patients' and 'staff'.

Although our 'infirmities' were physical not psychiatric, we related to One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. The monotonous routine of institutional living, the ways we tried to break routine, the strives against boredom, the political minefields, staff power trips, getting in or out, or getting visitors- we related to this film.

Whichever the institution type (i.e. mental, penal, physical, rehab) this movie portrays the dynamics of folks involved in the institutional environments of it's era to a perfect reflexion.

Six Weeks (1982)
A Very Good Family Film
25 February 2012
I was the same age as Katherine Healy when this film opened, I have life threatening disabilities from birth. At this movie's release, I'd lost two siblings during childhood to the same illness, so Six Weeks touched a serious cord in my heart.

Some critics resented this movie's heartfelt message as 'sappy' but I felt this movie was realistic.

Nowadays we have make a wish foundations for kids with terminal, critical, life threatening health conditions. I feel the message of the movie Six Weeks helped make these wish charities happen.

The movie was also a perk to the New York City tourists industry that was in the process of cleaning up times square etcetera for a retail and family friendly vacation location, (for example the Central Park horse carriage rides, skating, riding the subway) all showed viewers how great a New York City vacation could be instead of cinema examples like Midnight Cowboy.

A Favorite During My Tween Years
6 March 2011
I first saw this movie on Sunday night TV Wonderful World of Disney in 1979 and was hooked. I bought the book at the school book fair and reread it a dozen times.

My older sister had seen Parent Trap in the theater and knew all of the parts that 1970s TV had edited out.

In the 1980s I finally got to see the whole film uncut on the Disney cable channel and finally got to figure out "the little dolls signing the parent trap song" my sister spoke of (there was 15 minutes I'd never get back)....

Dorky animated cupids aside, as a kid I loved the movie's cross country saga. The camp cabin sabotage, the twins joining forces to prank dad's girlfriend.

Although most kids will still enjoy the original movie's favorite kid moments of the punchbowl splashing into a chaperon, the timeless cake falling on Miss Inch's face, and Vicky's hissy fit, the movie's long pace might bore todays kids.

Although some purists don't like the new remake of Parent Trap, I thought the remake kept the essence of the original story and updated it to match todays global travel, destigmatization of divorce, etc.

Equal Opportunity Mocking Well Done
15 February 2011
This movie always makes me laugh until I'm in tears. My favorite comedy of all time

The jokes don't spare anybody in this film. It's an equal opportunity mock fest.

The mid-west accents, religious lifestyle one ups man-ship, small town politics, class warfare pettiness, the mundane social life highlights of the VFW, hunting season, funeral buffets, town parades where even the clowns are smoking on the job, are hilarious.

This movie has well done comedic timing and the jokes keep rolling along whether seeing the previous queen wheelchair dance with help from her anorexia hospital ward nurse, dog barking talent segments, bizarre monologue interpretations to Soylent Green, sign language dance numbers, back stabbing stage moms, to creepy judges, all facets of pageant life is shown.

For those who despise warped humor this film is not for you but for viewers who love to never take life too seriously this movie is great.

Realer Than You Know
15 February 2011
I saw this movie by chance after my best friend died and lived her last moments very much like Jason Bateman's character in this movie.

As fate would have it I'm presently dealing with a life threatening illness and striving to do what's important before my turn to cross over happens (whether 10 weeks or 20 years from now).

The relationship parts of Breaking the Rules was spot on. When time is short all emotions are on the table. This movie portrayed the denial, anger, bargaining, depression, etc stages of grief well.

Although I was annoyed by the scene where Jason Bateman's character deals with a friend wailing and pounding on a junkyard car as mellow dramatic, the movie accurately showed how grief and loss are not always rational emotions in full action. In other words as annoying that scene came across to me, it still was realistically done.

Other accurate portrayals I give this movie kudos for are the parts where the guys are having fun in Reno, stopping to ice skate, horse back ride, blow fire balls during an impromptu bar fight, get married, etc. These guys keep being young guys in the face of terminal illness.

Although clothing and music seemed very out dated in proportion to this movie's release date, Breaking the Rules is a must see movie in my opinion.

Fun as the Old Creature Features on Saturday TV
15 February 2011
I thought this movie was a fun homage to the old creature feature TV movies of my childhood.

Was this movie worthy of an academy award or masterpiece theater?- not a bit, but I enjoyed the horror classic, eerie surprise arrival, chase scenes, futile escape efforts, creepy creatures, vivid battle scenes, blazing glorious down falls, and more.

Bad dialog and all I loved this movie as a fun escape :)

Maybe my friends will stop complaining about me choosing this movie someday and stop being such bores and watch and have fun.

I loved how this movie just got to the story. We as viewers weren't dragged along with boring back stories. We didn't have to sit through long talks about how everybody felt about every thing going on. The characters either were surviving, fighting to survive or weren't. Viewers got a cut and dry story that kept moving in my opinion.

By the way- I will be buying the DVD or Blue Ray version and I highly recommend this awesome film to all.
