Coming 2 America (for 10 minutes)
7 March 2021
To prepare for the highly anticipated sequel release I spent my Friday evening watching Coming to America, the original. A friend of mine cooked some amazing Fu Yung Hai which we enjoyed eating while watching the absolute 80s Eddie Murphy experience. He forgot part of the recipe and made a plate that could have easily fed 6 people instead of the four it was meant for, but it was delicious nonetheless.

Owing to the COVID-19 lockdown we couldn't really finish the movie before our 9 P.M. curfew kicked in. But as we've all seen the original countless times before we knew how it ended and so we felt reasonably refreshed and confident going into the sequel.

Flash forward to Saturday evening. The beginning of the film was quite promising. It was good to see most of the original cast reprise their roles over 30 years later. Quickly Eddie finds himself having to journey once again to Queens, NY. However, to much dismay, barely 10 minutes of runtime later he takes the plane home. This is when the movie falls apart.

Slowly the viewer realizes that the rest of the movie is going to play out not just -not- in America, but also not with Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall as the lead players. Instead this movie turns into a vehicle for Jermaine Fowler and Leslie Jones, and it does not work.

It is very much a shame, having to give this film a 4 out of 10. They had only one requirement that this movie should have covered: Eddie as an African King in the US.

How in the lord did they fail to do that?

Absolutely boring

I'm not quite sure what they were thinking with this. The people who loved Hill House will hate this. It's marketed wrong; it's a thriller romance instead of a horror drama. It's slow. There are actors from Hill House who play entirely different characters here, so surely they actually believed they were pleasing fans? An absolute snore fest.

The Interview (II) (2014)
10/10
One giant leap against oppression.
23 December 2014
In the suburbs of downtown Baltimore there is a tiny theater owned by Khoa "Kevin" Nguyen. This man became a hero the day he decided to stand up against censorship and communism. The date was the 22nd of December, 2014. The decision was screening The Interview against the wishes of the country Kevin's parents fled in the late 30s. When a day earlier this movie house was deemed insignificant, now the entire world was watching. I'll admit that I have had my fair share of luck in the past. Obtaining tickets for this premiere can't be described as a continuation of that luck. It was what the word 'wonder' was invented for.

The movie is a magical fairytale ride of friendship, deceit and terrorism. Clear becomes within the first ten minutes why Kim wanted this art out of the running; it is a critical indictment on the state of his person, country and regime. Seth Rogen and James Franco once again prove that they are the modern day Brothers Grimm. It is needless to say the Nobel peace prizes of 2015 and 2016 are in order.

A cultural mega storm not witnessed since the Renaissance. This film will cause riots not only in laughter, but perhaps more importantly against the corruption of this world. Ten out of ten.

"Guttural Tour de Force"
6 October 2013
On my latest and third visit to Japan I was initially not planning on seeing a movie. However, after one of my mates got kicked out of Roppongi - sickest club I've ever been - for spilling Nihon all over a couch we found ourselves with a few hours of free time before ageHa opened up. I ended up at a tiny cozy cinema in downtown Tokyo where this movie was the only flick running.

Ihe film was an introspective journey into the personal dynamic between a passive octogenarian and a kabukian call girl into what turns to be a guttural tour de force. While the denouement came a bit sudden I felt like it was perfect as the movie was running on a tad too long.

Afterwards we stumbled upon a random little restaurant where I got schooled on Japanese food. The menu there was awe inspiring. The place was kinda cramped and there is a tree growing in the middle of the room. None of this is relevant to me as I am a food critic and will not allow the ambiance of an eatery to affect my taste buds.

I ordered the albacore dish which I was surprised to find on a menu in Japan. It was good, not great. My issue with the dish was that it came out cooked with vegetables all over it. It was obvious the chef was trying to make it seem legitimately Italian. I will remember not to order Mediterranean dishes in Asia.

Overall I rate 'Like Someone In Love' a 6 out of 10.

Every Saturday night me and my bros try to watch a movie on the screen. Sometimes it doesn't happen though if the person who makes them play isn't here, only one guy knows how to play the movies lol, but I digress.

I did not understand this movie from the moment it started playing. I am a 21 year old man. I am high educated. I have seen 1200 movies in my time, but this took the cake.

I ended up having to read a review on Yahoo.com, which explained the plot for me. But even if I had known what was happening, I still think I wouldn't have enjoyed this movie.

After the film we all went to Pita Jungle. The guy who suggested the movie was mad that no one liked it, some other guys were mad and thought the film could've used a bit of more tit in it. So me, and the boys treated them on a roasted bell pepper hummus. After that we just went home really as it was getting late, decent food.

All in all I give this movie a 6/10, because it is for intelligent audiences.

Absolute disappointment.
13 August 2011
This film started off amazingly fast. So fast, in fact, that there was no real introduction or explanation. The main characters come into the screen and you are just supposed to run with them. Where did they come from? What is their story? It all remains a mystery. This doesn't allow you to care about any of them for one second. No one had any real clear motives.

As the film goes on, the story just seems to want to jump from one action scene to the next. People come and go. The dialogue is lame and so is pretty much every single decision the characters make.

Just as fast as it started, it ends. On an amazing cliffhanger. The blackout. For me, this was Zombieland. Only instead of great comedy you get great confusion and instead of zombies you get vampires and bad writing. Would not recommend this to anyone.

Terrible. Just terrible.
28 April 2011
I saw this movie in a small-time theater here in Washington this weekend. Going into it, I expected something like that climax of The Day the Earth Stood Still. Instead what I got was America Turns Africa: The Documentary.

It's like the directors thought the TV was invented 2,000 years ago and that every single one of us spends about 6 hours per day on watching television. Protip: people massively fared without moving images barely 50 years ago. This film is about 90 minutes of people sulking because they can't get their daily dose of electronics.

So much more could have been done with this. Really disappointing.

Rango (2011)

Bland and Overdone Formula
3 March 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I just got back from a free screening of Rango. It was very crowded at the cinema and I had to sit at the very front and I only ordered a small popcorn that was finished around the beginning of the movie, but even without all of that i still don't think i would have enjoyed this movie.

The story was very bland and followed the overdone and boring formula of a newcomer in a town lying about his past, becoming an unlikely hero, being revealed for who he really is, get turned on by the townsfolk only to return to save the day. Sure, the animation was a fresh breath in comparison to other recent animated films but that only takes it so far.

After the movie I went to Burger King, I had a tender-grilled chicken burger with a coke and fries, my burger was not unlike the movie very bland, I usually don't eat my fries with ketchup but for some reason during this visit to Burger King I felt like it. As I had already seated myself I didn't feel like getting up again to get the ketchup and just like the movie and the burger my entire meal felt very bland.

If you're looking for a mindless film to watch, go here. If you are looking for something truly hilarious and original, skip Rango.
