Atonement (2007)
A dark, depressing and captivating story held back by being a slow film.
Atonement is about "a young and foolish girl who sees something from her bedroom window, which she doesn't understand, but she thinks she does." It's a drama romance movie set in the 1930's during the Second World War. While the film does a great job connecting the audience and the characters, I felt a genuine connection to the characters on screen, the film is very much a slow burner. I was only around half an hour into this film when I started thinking "This is really slow, I hope it gets interesting soon." I ended up eating my words, however, as the ending of the film is terribly sad and made it all worth sitting through. If you like slow burners, or you feel patient enough to sit through a lot of talking, this movie is well worth a watch, it has a good but very dark and sad story, and a depressing ending.
Fool's Paradise (2023)
Charlie Day's directoral debut, I enjoyed it.
I've been excited for this film ever since it was announced. I love It's Always Sunny, and Charlie Kelly is my favourite character, and watching the podcast, I love Charlie Day as a person aswell. So when I heard about a movie where Charlie Day writes, directs and plays the main character, who seems to be very inspired by Mr Bean, I was very excited. I thought the trailer was funny, and I was devastated when it wasn't in UK theaters. While I thought the majority of the movie was very funny, there are a few jokes that don't land, and the plot doesn't make alot of sense. Despite that, it doesn't stop it from being entertaining, amusing and a generally fun movie.
Dangerous Game: The Legacy Murders (2022)
Cheesy, Saw inspired film revolving around a strange murder mystery board game.
This movie will be difficult to review without spoilers, but I'll try my best. So first off, this film is give or take. If you expect a brilliant drama/horror film with clever lines, tense scenes that make you root for characters and acting that blows you away... this isn't the film you're looking for. If you expect a cheesy, poorly acted film that's gruesome and gory, heavily inspired by the likes of Saw and Would You Rather, this film is exactly what you are looking for. Like I mentioned, the acting isn't good. One person literally walks off a severe injury. This film is quite gruesome, not as bad as a Saw sequel, but it has it's moments. Like I sort of mentioned, the bory horror here makes no sense, and people react alot less realistically to injuries as they should. The "traps" and the deaths mostly also don't make sense. The motives also don't seem to be there? It doesn't really make sense why most of the movie is happening. I can say that the movie is sort of entertaining, and the special effects are good. It also tries to be clever at times, but just ends up flopping on it's face and creating lines that make you roll your eyes. This film doesn't need to be clever, and it shouldn't have tried to be. Bit of a flop, but it was alright.
Insidious: The Red Door (2023)
A couple good moments, but mostly disappointing.
Insidious: The Red Door is the fifth film in the Insidious franchise, and it shows that it might be time for it to be over. It was a commercial success at the box office, and is the highest grossing film of the entire franchise, but that doesn't mean it is good! What made the first film so great was that it used horror in such a unique and terrifying way that had never been done before, and it worked. However, 4 films on and they're still trying to do the same thing, even down to the same music. There's only so many times that I can find hearing Tiny Tim in the dark scary. This is Patrick Wilson's directoral debut, and despite my criticisms, it is an impressive first film. It's just a shame that he decided to try and recreate the scares from the first Insidious, rather than try something unique. The film even referenced the infamous over the shoulder jumpscare, which is regarded as one of the scariest jumpscares of all time. Anyways, onto my main criticisms. This film is slow, and the payoff isn't great. I found most of the film to be boring, the greatest moments being in the first hour. The story isn't that good, some parts felt unexplained or irrelevant, and the plot seemed as if it had no clue where it was going at points, and the characters are just downright irritating at times. Despite this, I do have some positives, the acting is good. I felt for the characters and wanted them to succeed. The effects are incredible and the sets are well designed. The jumpscares can be good, a couple did get me, and there were tense moments. I came away from this film with really mixed feelings towards it as I wanted to enjoy it. I can't give this film any higher than a 5.
South Park (Not Suitable for Children) (2023)
An entertaining watch, however it got repetitive quick.
South Park: Not Suitable For Children is clear proof that the South Park writers are beginning to struggle with these hour long specials. Don't get me wrong, this was an entertaining watch, however the comedic element in this special started to decay half way through before being almost completely lost towards the end, where there are jokes where you're more likely to roll your eyes at them than laugh. There isn't a clear line between the A plot and B plot here as they both link up halfway through the show. The overall message of the show is that Prime Energy and Onlyfans are not suitable for children, and it does so through repetitive jokes that got no more than a chuckle from me, and a plot that would have been better suited for the original show's 20 minute runtime, rather than an hour long special. So if you plan to watch this: expect repetitive jokes and a plot that only makes sense if you understand what they're making fun of.
Dear David (2023)
Terrible, one of the worst movies released this year.
I assumed Dear David to be a serious horror movie, however it blew me away with it's horrible attempts at being scary! The script is unnatural and tonedeaf, this is not how the internet works and this is not how people talk. Every jumpscare flopped, there was no suspense or tension throughout, very disappointing for a HORROR MOVIE. Despite being produced by BuzzFeed, (a news company that writes about stuff that happens on the internet) it felt out of touch and was as if it was written by someone who doesn't use the internet often. Ontop of that, the story and script made no sense, despite being based off of something that (supposedly) actually happened. And, with as little spoilers as possible, the video game segment was the worst bit of this movie. If I had a single ounce of respect for this movie after any of the previous events, it was gone after the video game segment. All in all, this movie is atrocious, it isn't scary or funny, or even entertaining! Save your money and keep away.
