King Kong (2005)
7/10
Too long and the CG was awful in places
19 December 2005
I loved King Kong for many reasons but it did not need to be three hours long. The whole homo-erotic sub-plot involving the cabin boy Jimmy and the Ship's first mate was deeply pretentious. Heart of Darkness is about the ravages of the primordial environment on the human soul. King Kong is about a silver-back gorrilla.

Some of the not-so-special effects were seriously crap, for example the scene in which the natives are vaulting over the rocks and any time the main cast is replaced by CG versions of themselves. I must say Jack Black and Adrien Brody were excellent in the lead roles and Kong was wonderfully rendered. I think its time Peter Jackson ditched the 3 hour plus films and stop being so indulgent. Phillipa Boyens writing was lovely and poetic in LOTRs but several pieces of dialogue in Kong were too cheesy and despite being rather poetic did not fit the movie's tone at all. Overall I must say I loved most of King Kong and Ms Watts as Anne Darrow was beautiful and her soft (fake) Brooklyn accent was brilliant.

Passion Killer
24 March 2004
I just saw Mel Gibson's bloody and bloody awful telling of the last few hours of Jesus H. Christ, the film was badly made and Monty Python did a better job. Mel Gibson's film as no characterisation, no new slant on the story of Jesus and the acting apart from a good performance by James Caviezel was bordering on the non-existent.

The visuals were typically arty but I did enjoy the last half an hour on the march to Golgotha, the white buildings and sand contrasted well with Jesus' mutilated body. The much talked about violence is for once quite true, the scene with the claws ripping against the skin of Jesus is close to unwatchable, but its a highly manipulated attempt by the director to symbolise Jesus' suffering, it had to violent and bloody or else the film would have been rubbish and it is!

The ending is supposed to be uplifting but its just dull and drags on until guess what! Jesus is resurrected, all to the sounds of The Stone Roses 'I am the Resurrection', only joking!

I'm sorry but this film may have been made out of conviction and belief but so are a lot of things, all in all the film is a Hollywood bunch of pap. If you wanna see a good film about faith and religion see Pasolini's 'The Gospel According to St.Matthew' is incredible or 'The Life of Brian' which is just great, 'Blessed are the Cheesemakers' and 'Welease Woger, he's a wobber and a wapist'.

A Great Remake
19 March 2004
I saw 'Dawn of the Dead' this afternoon and whilst it is not a patch on George Romero's classic, Zack Snyder's film is a rollicking action flick with a brilliant third act and a great cast, though there are way too many characters in it, Sarah Polley, Jake Weber and Ving Rhames were great and the actor who played C.J. was cool too, extra credit goes to the dog Chips for his wonderful and daring mission through the sea of zombies towards the end, that dog ruled. The CGI is a bit ropey and the story moves far too rapidly, the controversial decision to make the zombies fast and athletic works better than in '28 Days Later' but there was not enough gore for me, the cannibalistic element was not played up like in the original. A great effort though, I hope the same director makes a sequel to the film. Zombie's rule and with intelligent scripts and cool action sequences, they could have a whole new era of zombie movies.

Royal Tenenbaums is wonderful
27 March 2002
I must say what incredible talent Owen Wilson and Wes Anderson have in creating such amazing characters, they have given us Max Fischer(Jason Schwartzman) Dignan (Owen Wilson) and now an entire cast of heroes The Tenenbaum's. I loved the film that much that like Eli Cash (O.Wilson) I wanted to a be a Tenenbaum. The film is interestingly put together and there is a certain unreal nature to it. the two writers write such good characters that the film is a classic. Bottle Rocket was a good film, Rushmore was a cult classic The Tenenbaums is a bona fide classic. Long live Owen Wilson and Wes Anderson for making American indie cinema refreshing

MON ONCLE D' AMERIQUE IS FANTASTIQUE
18 March 2002
This film will only appeal to two types of people 1. Resnais die-hard fans (including me) and intellectuals. This film is extremely odd and infuriating if your an average cinema goer. The film is a cinematic science lesson. But it is absolutley amazing. Resnais uses documentary techniques and surrealism and a narrator (a world renowned expert on human behaviour) who discusses the characters through out the film. It follows three people who are all loosely connected. What makes the film so superb is the fact that it is am intellectual avante garde arthouse film, that instead of isolating the viewer like they usually do. Resnais creates a wonderfully warm film. You end up really liking the characters. Who grow up before your eyes over the years. Resnais doesn't put a foot wrong.Gerard Depiedieu is great as the frustrated office worker who struggles raising a family and hassles at work.

The Butcher (1970)
SINISTER THINGS IN THE COUNTRYSIDE
18 March 2002
Warning: Spoilers
I must say I love this film. I love the fact you know the main character is the killer all the way through it. But Chabrol allows him to develop and be a seemingly nice man. There is something very Hitchcockian about this film, it reminded me of "Suspicion" and "The Birds". The ending is also terrifying and sad because the school teacher is left knowing the truth, but what can be done? The quietness of the film also impressed me. The long takes and slow suspense show that Chabrol is a master at character studies. This films gets 10 out of 10.

Cruising (1980)
FRIEDKIN'S FORGOTTEN FILM
16 March 2002
"Cruising" is a lost film. In this I mean it is a forgotten film. That is a shame because its probaly William Friedkin's best effort after

"The French Connection" and "The Exorcist". The film looks grubby and it recalls a dirty New York like Abel Ferrarra's "Driller Killer". What is an interesting fact is that the film was butchered on release and Friedkin said "It was butchery on the the scale of what RKO did to the Magnificent Amberson's". This is probably true because some area's of the film do not add up. The death of Pacino's neighbour and several othert elements seem brief and not fully devoloped, even the killers motive seems to have been rushed. Why all of a sudden are we allowed into his pyschosis, which reveals his problems. The film is very flawed but extremely fascinating.Pacino gives a great understated performance and his slow descent into the gay underworld is sometimes very funny. The scene in which he dances is wonderfully camp. But the film is very dark in places the ending is frustrating because it seems not to end just stop. Is Steve Burns/John Forbes the real killer? Is Friedkin really a homophobe that people made him out to be? who knows maybe a DVD release or dirctors cut would settle some nagging points. Friedkin's DVD releases so far have been exellent.
