The Favor (2006)
Didn't find this movie as intriguing as other viewers on this site did.
It was an 'alright' movie, but nothing to write home about. I found their 'bonding' to be a little strange, if not bordering on,well, maybe something bordering on some pedophilia type attraction. I don't think I would be the only person that felt a bit uncomfortable during a couple of scenes between the two main characters, wondering where it was leading. I understood the fact that 'Lawrence' was head over heals in love with 'Caroline' as a teenager, but I found it very odd that he had never moved on. It was sweet, yet TOTALLY unbelievable that a normal person would carry a torch (that burned as hot as the day she left), and that he was willing to step in and be "everything" to her and her family after one phone call, out of the blue. I don't know. I guess if someone told me 18 yrs. down the road that they waited on me as I moved on with my life, and was that eager to be my 'everything', I would be putting as much distance between that person and myself AND my child as soon as possible.
The Learning Tree (1969)
Little House On The Prairie...
I was cross referencing to try and see the relationship between 'Little House' and this film. Seems the gang was all there and they could have been shooting one or the other between takes. This wasn't the best movie I've seen, but it was better than all the over produced, careless after thoughts that make it to the screen these days. It had integrity and sincerity, and for it's time, was a pretty bold attempt to bring forward issues that were very unapproachable in '69. There was so much controversy over the black/white scenario at the time, I was surprised to see someone try and make an audience see both sides with equal understanding.
Tracks (2005)
Say "cheese"????
This movie was just lame on every level. The lead actor was as weak as water. The story was suppose to be disturbing, with urban "street smarts", and it reminded me more of a cross between an "after school special" and a Lifetime movie, but with some horribly delivered and unconvincing mature language. The plot was suppose to be a loosely based "true to life" story about a juvenile sent to an adult facility, and the hardships he endured, with rape scenes that I guess were meant to be disturbing. But as I said before, the acting and delivery of dialog, were so weak in this film,( I am ashamed to use the word 'film' to describe this crap ), that it turned it into a comedy for me.I have seen "movies of the week" that were more convincing. It didn't, at any point, bring any emotion, except extreme disappointment. Please don't waste your time. I gave it a 1 out of 10, only because 1 is the lowest # I could rate it.
Knockaround Guys (2001)
Loved It .....
I loved this film. It has a little bit of everything. It seemed to portray the characters as believable and real. Most of the Gangster style flicks always have a thick romantic plot line, where this film portrayed the guys as just regular Joes.Sure, there were women in the film, but there was no "guy get's the girl" type ending. My favorite scene was the bar/fight scene and the music playing in the background, was, ROMEO'S TUNE by :Steve Forbert. This was pure genius.I watch a lot of movies, and this one has stayed with me. It is definitely worth watching, at the least.I purchased it, myself. The soundtrack is mostly cheesy, but there is some good old stuff on it.I think that is where they cut some of their budget, for the guy referring to it as a low-budg pic. I don't happen to care what the budget of a movie is. IMO, the studios w/the big budgets spiy out more crap than all Indies out there.
The Bros. (2007)
Poor imitation of "Malibu's Most Wanted"
This film had a couple of funny parts, but for the most part, made me want to go ahead and change DVD'S and watch "Malibu's" instead, which I had in my own collection. At least I would know there was something funny coming up and give me something to look forward to.
I was disappointed in this very low budget film. And I do not judge a movie by it's budget. It just lacked originality and was too predictable. I would not rent or even watch this film again, and I am usually a repeat offender of film. The actors were forgettable. The story was half thought out, and it left me with an insatiable urge to get my laugh on.I ended up watching Jamie Kennedy's White Boy Gone Gangsta to have the comedy itch scratched.
Atonement (2007)
"Cold Mountain" dialog
First of all, the movie was not as "original" as they claimed it was going to be.It was nowhere close to being as good as "Pride and Prejudice". I have no idea why this movie was so acclaimed. There also seemed to be a lot of wasted footage. While the long, pausing scenes usually intensify the feeling they are trying to express, these scenes just seem to be fodder to make the film "movie" length.
The acting was good, though nothing so memorable to nominate Oscar worthy. But the part that got me the most, was the repeated line, "Come back. Come back to me". I kept waiting for them to add,"Come back to Cold Mountain".
Overall, not a bad movie. I liked it. I didn't love it.I won't buy it or even watch it again.
I will add that the cast did an overall good job. I mainly think the writing and directing just got a little complacent with having previous success.
Man About Town (2006)
Surprisingly Entertaining
I wasn't expecting much from this film. After reading some of these comments, I was surprised to see how divided the audience was.
It sure wasn't the greatest film I've seen lately, but it also wasn't even close to the worst.
I know how fun it can be to take shots at the man partially responsible for Gigli, but give the guy a break. It was cute, although American Beauty it is not. I liked how the potential for comedy was kept right under the surface, and kicked in at times I least expected it.A lot of the humor was so subtle, I don't think some of the audience even caught it. Yet it was warm and endearing at other times.I won't be buying this movie, but I may watch it on cable again sometime.
