christiane f. a masterpiece
5 November 2010
having actually met some of the protagonists of the film and been to the sound discothek back in 1970s berlin and experienced it first hand, i can definitely say this film is very very realistic. indeed, it was filmed in many of the actual locations. it is a masterpiece. if anyone is considering it is maybe chic to take heroin, then watch this film first. without a doubt it depicts the real horrors of heroin addiction and the utter misery it brings, yet it also portrays this era exceptionally well, with no frills. unlike most films which are set in the 70s, this film doesn't show a fun, glitzy abbafication of the 70s, but a crumbling, desperate, damp and cold berlin, just as it was back then. its gritty, dark and moving story, as told by christiane (and in reality also babsi) will always leave the viewer shivvvering. a great film and i would highly recommend it to anyone interested in berlin.

A Brilliant Reconstruction - Nosferatu 2007 edition
9 October 2007
Finally! The release of the newly restored 2007 edition of Nosferatu, is one I have been waiting for with great anticipation, ever since I heard it was being restored and I can safely say, it was well worth the wait. Indeed, it is an absolute masterpiece, shown as it should be! Its a definitive must have, for anyone who is interested in silent film. I own the beautiful steelbook German edition from Transit (as i live in Berlin) but please note, it is entirely w/o English subtitles! The film itself looks utterly incredible in fact, we have never seen it looking so good. The picture is crystal clear, sharp and very detailed, its practically flawless. Its a joy to watch. The original colour tinting, brings the chapters alive. All previous releases literally pale in comparison. I already own the soundtrack score from a 1995 RCA/BMG cd, but combined with the moving images and 5.1 audio, Nosferatu now looks and sounds terrific. Although I must say I really enjoyed the excellent James Bernard score for the BFI release, this is the way it was intended to be heard back in the 1920s. Therefore, I highly recommend this splendid DVD and by buying it you support the hard work that went into its reconstruction and invest in future releases to come. Congratulations to Transit on their excellent work in restoring this and other classics, such as Battleship Potemkin, Metropolis or Der Golem et al. Well done!

this film is excellent! every fan of this genre should own it
3 October 2007
if you - like me - love trashy horror movies, then i can safely say, this film is excellent! every fan of this genre should own it (even if its in a unfathomable language - it all adds to the effect). the first time i saw this film i cried with laughter from beginning to end. fabulous! its a total masterpiece of its genre, yet sadly its practically unknown. as with all of jess francos brilliant films, it is unintentionally funny and highly entertaining. it delivers all the usual franco trademarks: sex, blood, death, nudity, more blood, tits, violence and great overacting. for sure, mr Tarantino would have loved to have made this film. he certainly couldn't have made it anymore over the top. i love the way the overdubbed clip-clops of the horses, sound exactly like someone clicking two pieces of metal together (or they obviously went to great lengths to recorded two-legged horses). visually, it has some really creative camera-work too, indeed, its like watching a movie after eating one of my reeders digestive biscuits! franco guaranteed everyone would be happy. any film that contains Dracula, frankenstein AND wolfman all in one movie, certainly wanted to make sure no fan would be left to freeze in the crypt. its entertaining in every way, even the original poster artwork is so wonderful it could almost be mistaken for a modern replica. if this film is available - anywhere, buy it. i guarantee you will not be disappointed. whatever, i loved it.
