Barbarian (2022)

Warning: Spoilers
Tropes tropes tropes! Holy tropes! There are so many tropes in this movie, but I ate it up like candy. Like the cover art of the movie shows, one of the most classic shots in horror movies is the basement shot. The character is seen at the frame of the door, looking down into the dark basement in trepidation. And of course, the character is always going to venture further! This movie does this not once, nor twice, but three times! It was fairly nauseating, like indulging in some candy, but they just kept venturing further down the basements of this house. And the further the characters ventured on, the more I was lured into the suspense of the movie. I kinda loved it, but like eating candy, at some point I had had enough. I swear, they did the trope of someone dropping a flashlight/weapon four or five separate times and the ending was a little unsatisfying, like I had a stomach ache from eating too much candy. I wish they expanded a little more on the backstory of the father and monster too, but I guess somethings are better left untouched, like an Almond Joy. But enough of the critiques! Let's get to the sweet parts!

The suspense that builds at the beginning of the movie between Bill Skarsgard and Georgina Campbell is incredible. To get the guy who played It the Clown to play an actual good guy in this movie is genius! And Justin Long's character is so hilarious, the tropes he's fated to commit are still satisfyingly digestible when he eventually succumbs to them. I know I'm going to revisit this movie when I get a craving for it, dare I say, like a candy craving. But enough of the jokes! This movie is a thrill ride, that I'd recommend to any who's a fan of this genre or even potential new fans who are curious to step into that dark basement. Now let's eat some candy!

The Curse of Bridge Hollow (2022)
15 October 2022
A big city family moves into a quiet, suburban community during October. They begin to feel like outsiders as they adjust to the new lifestyle of a town that celebrates Halloween like a fun-spirited cult. The daughter accidentally unleashes an ancient, evil entity called Stingy Jack who cursed the town long ago. It's up to the father and daughter, to overcome their disagreeable relationship and defeat the curse of Stingy Jack together.

It's an enjoyable family Halloween movie, with a stupid plot that revolves around a father that refuses to let his family participate in Halloween, in the name of science?? Lame!! Anyway, Marlon Wayans keeps this stubborn dad act for a little too long which drags the movie down for me, but the charm is kept alive by the spooky concept and acts from Priah Ferguson, Lauren Lapkus, Rob Riggle, and Kelly Rowland. It's cute, harmless fun, for the average Halloween fan.

House of 1000 Corpses (2003)
15 October 2022
House of 1000 Corpses isn't a story driven by plot or character development, and don't expect it to be for a movie of this genre. Instead, it's a dark, sinister, somewhat comedic, thrill ride full of gore and satisfying aesthetics for horror fans alike. Rob Zombie adds in his own elements of style that leave memorable characters and scenes for his viewers. Like the fated victims of the story, who travel down a back-country road to encounter the strange and fantastical charm of rural America, this movie is for those who are equally eager to delve into the deranged, outsider, cult-like appeal this movie presents.

Smile (2022)
15 October 2022
One of the best psychological horror/thriller movies that has come out recently. Smile is packed with jump scares, some more obvious than others, but it doesn't rely heavily on those tropes to keep you scared. The acting, editing, atmosphere, and of course those damn smiles, are gripping enough to keep you uncomfortable throughout the entire story. Yes, it's worth pointing out that this movie has a similar feel to It Follows, but it's not some Greta Van Fleet-type knock off. Shout out to Sosie and the rest of the cast and shout out to the ever-present theme of mental health that once again slips its way into a modern-day storyline. TALK IT OUT PEOPLE!

V/H/S (2012)

V/H/S has the look and feel of a cult classic for the found footage genre. It can be difficult to sit through just an hour of scenes behind a shaky camera and this movie sits at just about 2 hours in length. However, breaking up the storyline with different anthology stories made it more tolerable for me. It executes well on some themes like the sexual depravity that often comes with amateur porn, but other areas it fell flat with general writing/acting (that's for you to decide though). It lost steam midway through for me, but most of the stories were fairly thrilling and the vague storyline in between each of the tapes was enough to keep me around and watch more. Overall, I'd recommend to fans of this genre, or even if you're curious, but I could understand if people hated it.
