Slackers (2002)
Slackers?
9 November 2002
Um...hi. I saw the movie. Thought it was OK. The jokes and visuals with that one guy that used to have his own show on Nickelodeon was kinda good. But Slackers? These guys are in college.

OK so they cheated their way to college. Real slackers wouldn't even want to go that far! The only true slacker film is Slacker. Clerks was close but even that guy in Clerks had a job that he stuck to! So whoever made this movie obviously had a grunge complex and figured that he/she had to call it something that appealed to such dying breeds as the slackers. Better luck next time.

Oh yeah, Jason Schwartzmann was awesome. He should obsess about every girl is a movie. I can't wait for the one starring Katie Holmes and him!

The Best Movie Ever Made
25 June 2002
Yeah so anyways, this movie remains in my repetoire of films to show friends for years. I absolutely loved it. I hated math and algebra as a kid and past the point of mere numbers lies life itself...brilliantly done to the point of drilling yourself in your own noggin'! I loved the grittiness, black/white constrast, the representation of the number of life itself. It was only natural to make Requiem For A Dream. This film was a low-budget film...so what! The director totally made everything stand out 10 fold. The soundtrack was magnificant and surreal as much as the movie was and everything about the project (from the website on down) was complete and pure. Bravo!

Eh

Well, ATL was OK. Matthew Broderick shows off his play-acting talent in the physical parts of the film. Meg Ryan's character was different from her others' in other films, but ultimately, the film lacks a clear, concise reason as to why it was made. Yeah yeah, it's a comedy, but still...older comedies had a perfectly crafted plot and genius wit put into them; this film gets thrown up on the "we have an idea and we want it on video" pile.

One upside was the originality of the stalking scenes in which Ryan and Broderick arrange a pretty peculiar setup in a loft across the way from their former-loves' apartment. But it ends up adding the overly convaluted setup of the movie.

I had no idea until now that this was a Spielberg film. Yikes! Well, it features a classic cast of comedians all known for their individual comedy talents, but when this film fused them all together, it creates one giant stinkbomb. The plot goes nowhere with too much time spent setting up this grand attack by the Japan forces upon Hollywood, and, even though the idea is pleasing, we hardly see any of the Hollywood thrills or anything worth grasping about this city's importance. Drawn out majorly. It could be compared to Tommy Boy now, but it tries to get a very general and short plot into a strecthed-out 2 hour flic. Aweful.

Tool: Salival (2000 Video)

Great band serves up great collection
23 January 2002
This video was a great reminder about why fans of Tool love them. I am one of them, and I have been one for some time (opium years), and never before have I felt a great appreciation for their art as a whole than when they released this collection of works. Sure the VHS owners (like myself) don't get to see the B&W film for an early song, but it still works my mind into a frenzy on how they came up with some of those images. Stinkfist and Prison Sex are two of my favorite, which I'm glad to have on there, and who care's if they keep releasing new videos that can't be on there? I love Schism and all, but this is about the evolution of the whole thing...you get the total experience of what their minds are like collectively, which is a great refreshment from modern-day metal and rock personalities all over.

Bauhaus: Gotham (1999 Video)

Energetic, poignant piece of this band's history
23 January 2002
I went to the reunion (resurrection) tour in 1998, and that was the only show I have ever seen of these four men who absolutely defy age, pop culture, and loss of energy. I would challenge any band out now to have as much artistic talent as Peter Murphy displayed on-stage on Gotham. I've listened to them for quite a while before seeing them, and I might as well throw my CDs away because this video wraps all of their best and brightest (as bright as Bauhaus can be) songs up into a great ensemble of emotion. A must have for any fan...who doesn't already own 300 copies of it.

Depressing Hereafter
23 January 2002
My girlfriend and I searched the Sundance section of our local (insert mainstream video store name here), and came about this out of nowhere, but we really weren't taken by it there, and after we watched it, we really weren't taken after it. It was just depressing and confusion all thrown around into a bus crashing accident which you really couldn't care too much about because of the HIV daughter, the paralyzed lying teen, the kooky bus driver with her stroke-victim husband (?)...it was too much to care about at times. I love the cinematography and placement of the characters throughout the film, but the overall theme was dismantled.
