El secreto de sus ojos (2009)
Incredibly unique storyline
It's always hit or miss when you take on the foreign language films and watch them with subtitles as it can just feel like you're reading the film instead of watching.
This however does not fit that bill.
Almost immediately you can become so immersed in this winding road of a storyline that's rammed with twists and the non-linear timeline that only leaves you wanting more.
The film will make you question all of your views on justice, the pursuit of the truth and your own emotions towards any villainous human being you've heard of. With a hard emphasis on the death penalty.
Acting is sublime, writing is even better and the theme works wonders.
8/10.
Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain (2001)
Don't let the creepy look on the poster fool you.
I went into this film with relatively low expectations considering I normally find it pretty difficult to get behind foreign films with subtitles constantly popping up. But this was a bit different.
The score behind it is the first thing coming to my head since I cannot get it out. Extremely catchy. A rather unusual romance film as it does follow a number of different relationships instead of one main one. But Amelie's relationship troubles do pay off.
The acting from the protagonist was exceptional and is something that should be studied today, especially through the facial expression. I regret not watching this sooner.
Mission: Impossible (1996)
Intricate details hard to follow but intensity makes up for it
At the beginning of this iconic film, a grand action sequence takes place in Prague in which Ethan Hunt loses people dear to him carrying out a mission.
In this mission though, the why's and joes become very hard to follow due to the secret agent related jargon used in the dialogue.
As the film goes on you begin to understand more about the betrayals and double crossing that has gone on but for the average viewer like myself, the beginning is not as enjoyable because of the struggle to understand.
The intense scenes, action that has you on the edge of your seat, Leon the professional making a little guest appearance and the introduction to Luther, a character that reappears multiple times in the franchise, do make good features to the film.
7/10.
The Iron Lady (2011)
The non-linear timeline just doesn't pay off
My first time seeing this today, and I fully understand the reasoning for Meryl Streeps Oscar and the Oscar for makeup and hairstyling. However, aside from Jim Broadbents acting, the rest of this film fell very flat.
It was an interesting way to approach the life of Maggie Thatcher with the random spouts of apparent dementia, but the camera work and cinematography felt so unsettled that I was too busy focusing on that instead of the plot.
Ranging from the IRA bombings to the Falklands war, this film details well the history behind Thatchers run as prime minister, but ultimately we don't feel as empathetic for her in her younger days because we're too focused on what's happening in her later years.
A Ghost Story (2017)
Pace picks up after dull start
This film begins out with a bit of a struggle as you're forced to sit through, what feels like, 20 minutes of Rooney Mara forcing herself to be sick over eating a pie whilst she grieves over her newly deceased husband.
Casey Affleck, the dead husband, then proceeds to wander about the rest of the film as a hooded figure in the form of a ghost.
The long scenes strike a great deal of thinking for us, the audience, into how our protagonist feels about what he's witnessing as a ghost.
The film poses questions about our importance in the grand expanding universe but ultimately, I had to mark it down on the tough long speechless nothing scenes even though it picked up after the pie had been eaten.
