Heat (1995)
Heat: Change, Reflection, and Catharsis
"Yeah, it is what it is. It's that or we both better go do something else, pal."
"I don't know how to do anything else."
"Neither do I."
"I don't much want to either."
"Neither do I."
Heat is the dream of LA, of the endless night and nearing dawn, of people who are stuck but must move forward, who must change because eventually, everything will change.
Change.
McCauley wants to change; he even convinces himself that he'll leave his life behind, that he'll settle with Eady. But he can't change. He's stuck, alone, forever following the mantra, thirty seconds flat.
Hanna knows he should change, but he'd rather have a chaotic life and broken relationships and do what he does than have a normal-type life. And all he is, is what he's going after.
Watching Heat has become something of a cathartic experience for me. It's probably one of the few movies I really feel a lot of emotion towards, and that I feel comfortable crying during.
I love it.
Heat has you sit with your thoughts as the characters do. Mann does such an incredible thing here: he lets you take a break. For such an intense action thriller, there's a lot of calm, reflective moments that allow you to get sucked into the world, relate to the characters, and reflect on yourself. The music and cinematography do an incredible job of doing this as well, making the film seem almost timeless in a way.
Heat will forever have a sense of memory and nostalgia for me. I will change, life will go on. How else can we change if we do not reflect, if we do not look back on ourselves? Perhaps that is what some search for in this film... a moment of static, of facing the reality that we can't have it all. All we can do is chase for the things we want and be the people we wish to be, or else we'll be left behind on a airport runway, running away from the only chance we're given, fate or otherwise.
Reminiscence (2021)
*sigh* At least the poster is cool?
I really wanted to like this movie. The concept sounded very interesting, and it's got Hugh Jackman as the lead, so it's bound to be at least good, right?
No. This movie just disappoints continuously throughout. This was such a huge waste of time.
If you're really interested in knowing what it's about, just glance at the synopsis. God, it's actually angering how bad it ended up being.
Holiday Switch (2007)
ABSOLUTE STONE-COLD ATROCITY
GOD WHYYY.
THIS IS A HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE MOVIE. IT HAS EVERYTHING: LOVE, DRAMA, HORROR. THIS HAS BAD ACTING, A BAD SCRIPT, BAD CINEMATOGRAPHY, EVERYTHING. I HATED PAULA OR PEPPER OR WHATEVER HER NAME WAS. I HAD NO INVESTMENT OR CARE.
DO NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE. YOU WILL FOREVER HAVE TO LIVE WITH THE NIGHTMARES.
Gingerbread Miracle (2021)
What you'd expect from a Hallmark movie...
I found this movie originally searching up for a gingerbread cookie recipe. I've lost two hours of my life with still no cookies. The only miracle here is how I managed to stay awake throughout the whole movie. At least the Spanish pronunciations were decent?
The English Patient (1996)
The Hungarian Patient "Patient"
Rating: 7.8
First of all, the name is misleading. The guy is Hungarian, and you can add another "patient" to the title. The guy was pretty slow, and I think you gotta respect the other characters patience.
Overall, the film is a great love story that is reminiscent of the classic "Casablanca" (WWII, Northern Africa, star-crossed lovers) without the quotable lines.
Definitely check it out, though Anakin Skywalker might not like it. There's a lot of sand, plus the thing with the guy being burned up... I don't think that would be a happy reminder.
Cowboys & Aliens (2011)
All in the title "Cowboys and Aliens"
There were cowboys, and there were aliens. That's about it. I mean, there was some sort of storyline in there, but if you're looking for a movie about Cowboys and Aliens, well, you've hit it.
Half-way through, I was praying for Buddy or Ironman to show up.
Jon Favreau, what have you done?!
