One Hour Photo (2002)
great-until its anti-climactic conclusion......
I for one, was very excited to see Robin Williams in a gritty,
villianous role, and was incredibly let down by "Insomnia", and
again, though not as badly, by One Hour Photo. In the beginning
and middle portions of the film, there is a very effective creepy build
up, as to what Sy Parish will do for this family, or more likely to
them, when he isn't accepted as Great ole' Uncle Sy. This is also
played out brilliantly by Williams, my let down mentioned at the
start is not of his acting, but how his roles are written really. The
build up this film offers is just so let down by its ending. Sy really
doesn't do anything, he takes some odd photographs, thats about
it, then the police catch him, we find out about his troubled
childhood, and all end well. So much of a let down. I always feel in
movies about a psycho type, no motive or explanation (in this case
Sy being an abused child) makes it much scarier. I understand
this film was a psychological thriller, and I am not at all saying I
need a shooting or gore to scare me for an ending, but something
more frightening for an ending to this film's creepy build up would
be nice. For a MUCH more effective thriller along similar lines, go
watch "The Talented Mr. Ripley".
Forrest Gump (1994)
One of the best movies ever made, and will stay a favorite of mine....
I saw this movie, years ago, when it was first released, and am
commenting on it now, years later, as it is and always will be one
of my favorite films. Everyone has a little, or a lot of Forrest in
them. Though not all share his IQ, or his talents, I think all people
share some of his heart. Forrest is the ultimate everyman. His
positive outlook on life, no matter the instance, and enjoyment of
the small things, is something that inspires. Also Lt. Dan is
relatable for the rest of us, who have a more pessimistic outlook
on things, but even in the end, he sees how to be grateful for his
life, and live it, which is what most people want, I think. The love
story between Forrest and Jenny, is also one of the most beautiful
in film history I feel, entirely pure to the core, yet not a perfect
journey, or ending. The incredible acting by the entire cast, but
especially the three leads, just cemente this beautiful story as one
of the greatest films ever made. The score is also amazing, and
helps us along the journey, to get lost in Forrest's world.
I Am Sam (2001)
Great film, some of the best acting I've seen......
I Am Sam is a wonderful movie. Although some may view parts as overly emotional, the acting is SO good, and the story is well done, that a few overdone lines in the script do not bring down the level of quality. Dakota Fanning, who plays Lucy, is the best child performer I have seen in a movie in years. Sean Penn also does probably the best acting of his career, and Michelle Pfeiffer gives an additional strong performance. I think despite the movie's convenient ending, it doesn't always take the happy path. Some scenes are not that easy to watch as Sam DOES make bad decisions in places, and at times, you do wonder if he can take care of Lucy, despite his love and best intentions. The story raises questions and emotions, characters are developed very well. The one thing I wish the movie had done was shown a bit more of Lucy's perspective during the middle of the film, but overall, I still have to give this movie praise.
The Bumblebee Flies Anyway (1999)
Great little film, very well acted- interesting concept
I saw this movie because I think Elijah Wood is a very talented very underrated actor, and I was very impressed with the film as a whole! Sure a few lines are a little cheesy, and at times a low budget is evident- but really not important at all! The concept of the film I think is not only intriguing and thought provoking, but brave as many people would find it controversial. The parallels of Barney and Mazzo are subtle enough to be great, and effective. Th performances are very good in this film, especially Elijah Wood, perhaps his best to date (w/ the possible exception of LOTR) and Janeane Garofalo as well, who I love in comedies, was great as a caring doctor, she should do more drama. Overall a well acted , interesting film, recommended
Ghost World (2001)
Clever, honest and real, captures real emotions of post high school confusion- brilliantly done
This movie fully embodies the feelings of the high school graduate who doesn't know where they are going, isn't skipping off to college. Thora Birch's Enid portrays emotions to a T, and even takes the extra steps most in real life don't have the courage to, but always wanted to. Her honesty as a movie theater consessions seller, her relationship with Steve Buscemi, and her action at the end of the film, all let an audience live the decisions they were too scared to make. Enid is one of the most relatable characters in a movie I've ever seen. On the flip side her best friend portrayed by Scarlett Johannsen, lives the life most do take, working mindless jobs, doing what has to be done, taking the "adult" path. The characters show a wonderful balance, and perspectives of both are easily recognized, and Steve Buscemi's Seymour is a brilliant performance of what might lie at the end of the path either of the girls take (until Enid's final move takes her out of that possibility) Overall, all characters developed well, intertwined perfectly, and showing the complete balance of the paths taken by those not as sure of their future. Brilliant film recommended to anyone, but especially those who didn't take that "normally accepted" path in life
Moulin Rouge! (2001)
Amazing film. Symbolism is brilliant- well acted, beautiful songs, beautiful sets. FULL of heart!
This has become my favorite movie of all time!
Baz Luhrman has packed so much into this movie, that you have to see it dozens of times to try and catch it all. The music is absolutely gorgeous. Ewan McGregor and John Leguizamo in my opinion give oscar worthy performances, and also very strong performances from Nicole Kidman and Richard Roxburgh.
This movie is loaded with brilliant symbolism. Also, you feel so much for the characters along the way. The sets and costumes are spectacular.
I loved every aspect of this movie, and recommend it to all....
