Good story trapped in a subpar tv-movie
7 May 2020
Tells the story if three men, a writer, a doctor and a orchestral conductor.

After several years they all end up together at the town they grew up in and old secrets start to surface.

What i do like about the movie is how the three men have their distinct character trades. The conductor is very aggressive, the doctor is timid and the writer a kind of in the moment person who enjoyes toying with his friends emotions. Story by a novel of Simon Vestdijk is good and loved the few moments where the fourth wall is slightly gets broken. Sadly you get a lot of overacting, strange cuts, melodramatic backstory scenes and corny soundtrack.

If you can look past that, there is an interesting movie hidden underneath and has a good payoff.

A fun ride
5 November 2013
With a title as dull as Cockneys vs. Zombies you might think you've found another cheap horror movie. Yes it looks pretty cheap, but it's also a fun flick.

This is the kind of movie that needs to establish itself within the first five minutes. Let's face it, we want to see zombies. And by god, do we get zombies right away. At a building site, workers dig into an old tomb that's filled with dead bodies. This is where the mayhem starts. After the workers are bitten by the undead the flashy intro starts, accompanied by the song Monster by The Automatic.

We get to meet Terry (Hardiker) and Andy (Treadaway), two brothers, delivering meals on wheels for retirement homes. When they deliver the meals at their grandfathers (played by English veteran Alan Ford) home, he gives them a speech about doing more with their lives, than just bringing food to elderly people.

In fact the two brothers have some other plans. Because the building developers are looking to expand and they want to demolish the retirement home. For the love and respect of their Grandfather, the brothers decide to rob a bank.

With the help of a paranoid friend, a crazy ex-soldier (with a steel plate in his head) and their lovely niece Katy (Ryan) they set their plan into motion. Needless to say, a lot goes wrong.

This is the kind of movie that will entertain you, if you're looking for some "Brainless" escapism. The zombies look pretty good and the humor is funny at times, there are definitely some laugh out loud moments present. Another good choice is to show the Zombie outbreak from two different points of views. On the one hand we have the brothers and crew doing a bank heist, trying to survive the zombies and each other. At the other side of town we see the people in the retirement home working together and show us that old people can still kick ass.

In the end it you could do a lot worse than Cockneys vs. Zombies. It's not as witty as Shaun of the dead, but if you like zombie movies in general, you'll probably end up enjoying it.

+ Zombies are fun

+ The acting is tolerable

+ Michelle Ryan makes a great female heroine

  • CGI blood

  • The ending drags a bit

Not good at all
5 November 2013
This Australian movie "oozes" low budget. From the remote campsite setting, to the six bland friends (3 boys, 3 girls) and the bad acting. But with these tropes in the movie, there can still be the factor that it is enjoyable.

Unfortunately I did not enjoy this movie. It starts off with a prologue of a Caveman making cave drawings. He is attacked by some sort of deformed human with long sharp teeth (actually if you played the Mortal Kombat games, its Baraka, the creature looks like an updated Baraka). Some years pass, and we find ourselves in present day Australia, or at least somewhere in the middle of nowhere. Six happy friends led by anthropology student and Alpha Male named, Dace, the group sets out in to the wilderness to look for some cave drawings. Once they are in the cave, one of them, Anja, cuts her arm and her blood drips into the moist surface of the cave. After that we see some parts of the nature react, something bad is rising…

The group sets up camp and because this is a low budget horror movie, there needs to be skinny-dipping. Once the blond girl of the group, Mel, goes into the water, she wants to lure her boyfriend Chad in, but he's afraid of water or something, it doesn't get quite clear why he doesn't want to go in. But luckily for him, after Mel comes out she's covered with leeches. After Alpha Male Dace used salt to get them off, Mel goes to sleep, just to wake up in the middle of the night with a fever. The group wants to take her to the hospital, but the car tires are being eaten by… killer ants. So they plan to go on foot, but sweet Mel finally turns in to a female Baraka and start to attack everyone.

From that point on the movie goes around in circles. The same thing happens over and over again. The group guards the camp, Mel kills one of them, they fight her off, and repeat. A movie like this can be a lot of fun if the humor was funny, which is not, even the unintentionally bad acting doesn't make up for it. The gory effects are OK, but not much present. The only recommendation I can give this movie is if you want to see a Kangaroo get attack by a turned human, than you're in luck, this movie has that. Not to give the ending away, but it had some really bad effects, and made everything more unclear.

But in the end, all the clichés, bad acting, the repetitive nature of it all, it saddens me to say that it doesn't make for a good horror movie. Although I hope that the director keeps making movies, hopefully the next time will be better.

+ It has a killer rabbit

+ Decomposing Kangaroo

-Bad Acting

-Repetitive story

-Not enough gore

Red Riding 1974: get to know the the new spider-man
23 August 2010
I bought the Red Riding Trilogy on DVD last week. I've reading up on all the praise and the kind of story it portrays.

If you like stories that has police Corruption, with serial killers on the side and the Press interwoven in three movies, than this is a nice way to pass the time.

I am not English, so the back stories, truth or fiction, i was not that familiar with. The thing i did know, was the stellar cast that's in it. As a movie buff, its nice to see the cream of the crop of English actors.Sean Bean makes the effort for the most of the time worth seeing. But there are more. Class Actor Warren Clarke gives a short but intense moment as the chief of police. And another copper called Bob Craven, here played by Sean Harris. I saw this guy in several movies like Harry Brown and 24 hour party people, and i can tell you he scares the hell out of me (if you get a change to get the DVD, watch the making of 1980, you'll get the picture).

But the man who must lead you through this story of corruption and missing children is Eddie Dunford, played by Andrew Garfield. He is cocky, thorough reporter, who has a weakness for the ladies. He even starts a romantic relationship with one of the victims mother's (Rebecca Hall. I thought Garfield did a great acting job, just as he did in 2007s Boy A. Here he also gets reunited another actor from that movie, Peter Mullan.

I'm happy that the film doesn't use any archive footage of the real murders. It stands as mostly a fictional story thats very well shot. The look is very authentic and the Smokey atmosphere helps a lot.

The only criticism for me is, you feel its made for television. I get the point that it was meant for cable release in the UK, therefore i am easy on the score, because for a TV production, this is topnotch.

I yet have to see 1983, but i already like the way 1980 has so much hints to 1974, that it really does justice as a Trilogy and as individual films.

If it wasn't a true story...
4 April 2008
i would really write this off as a dismemberment of all the great gangster classics like Goodfellas, Untouchables en yes even Blow. Some actions in this movie just made me feel i was watching a dejavu of the last 25 years of gangster movies. Don't get me wrong i wasn't bored while watching the movie, but i wasn't surprised either. And yeah, Russel knows how to work with his favorite surrogate director Ridley Scott. Like a good boy he gives the same kind of epic acting he always does by altering his role in a way that it looks fresh again. Further on Ridley borrows Denzel from uncle Tony to shine as the bad guy. The same was done in Training Day and... yes he won the Oscar. This time no nomination. I think because of the material given the movie just tries to hard to be epic. It doesn't feel epic, it's the true story of a bad-ass gangster, it's a biopic.

The supporting cast was just out there to give the two stars more time to shine. Cuba Gooding Jr. completely wasted in a minor role. Armand Assante as a forced Corleone ripoff and the most annoying Josh Brolin. Love the guy in NCFOM and even the Goonies. Seeing Josh in more mainstream movies is cool, but get a new haircut and shave the mustache. Did he had a mustache in the valley of elah? I don't know. Maybe they had separate roles. But the point is, the same clichés are used. Just like Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven the the supporting cast just doesn't do much. It's all about the billed stars. And then the biggest movie cliché used so many times in the history of mainstream pictures, the part where the one star meets the other star in the movie. It was actually cool in Heat, because that was Pacino's and DeNiro's first for real together on screen time. But i remember a certain SF movie called Virtuosity which ruined this moment for me.

I know not everybody shares the same opinion about movies and i know not everybody will share mine. Thats o.k. because i respects everyone else's even if i don't agree.

Before i leave, my never will happen Wishlist:

-Ridley Scott doing a movie with Jack Black -Denzel Washington doing an offbeat Woody Allen Biopic -Russel Crowe returning for Gladiator 2 and Josh Brolin's Mustach getting his own movie deal

Gives a good view of life
3 April 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Nothing in this movie is far-fetched. It gives a perfect example about issues everybody's dealing with. Life as a single mother, getting around without any cash or motivation or trying to establish yourself as new member of the community. All of these things need time and when the time comes, like this movie shows us, we can all help each other.

We see the lovely Laura Linney in another spectacular role as the single mother of and eight year old child. This boy played by the little brother of early '90 favorite Macaulay, Rory Culkin. Next in the cast is Mark Ruffalo. He plays Linney's brother. His character is broke, unemployed and has no real direction in life. Due to the early death of their parents Sammy(Linney) and Terry (Ruffalo) had a great bound as they grew up.

Now Terry comes back to the place where he doesn't wants to be, Scottsville, the place he grew up. Sammy and his nephew Rudy are still living there. First his only motivation was to go to his sister for just a short visit and a handful of cash. After some self exploitation Terry stays longer than he had planned for. Here he begins to bound with Rudy and along the way trying to find peace with himself and trying to do the right thing, although it doesn't always go the way he toughed.

The return of Terry gives Sammy the change to give more attention to here job. She just got a new boss who is the kind of control-freak who doesn't tolerate much of his employees. The boss played by Matthew Broderick gets into an argue more than ones with Sammy when it comes to here personal life. Apart from this Sammy is living an empty love life with a man she actually pity's and when the tension gets high she eventually gets involved with her boss.

This movie has a lot to go for. It's interesting for a lot of people. You can see things in it from your own brother/sister relationship, raising a child on your own or just not knowing where to stand in this life. It's rare for a movie to touch you on so many levels, but i guess this one does. Great job to director Kenneth Lonergan and his fine assembled cast.

Oh my god...
15 April 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this picture yesterday in a movie marathon. I actually was expecting a not so great movie, noticing the production was completed a half year a go. But what i got to see was far worst than i had in mind.

There was not a single scene that was inspiring. All the actors, including Ben Kingsley, where so out of place. I was actually crying out of laughter when Kevin McKidd was on the screen. Man, i liked him in trainspotting, but here every scene had the same angry face, it looked like a picture of 1 face put on a moving body.

I can't tell you anything about the story, because there wasn't any. It all was one big mess.

After seeing this lame excuse of a movie i came to the conclusion that that the people who made this are even worst than an Uwe Boll production. And i think that says enough.

Go see it if you want laugh your ass off, not if you wanna see an great era-movie with lots of great battles and interesting story line, they will not be found.

Very entertaining movie
11 October 2005
First of all i like to say, i am not a Bay fan. But i like the movies he makes. They are most of the time mindless fun and entertaining.

The same thing can be said with this movie, although i find this more compelling. It has a nice future perspective to it and exceeds to grab your attention.

I hear people moan about that this movie stole ideas from other movies. But i frankly don't mind. I wanted my two hours to be fun, and they were.

This is a movie for everyone who wants to have a good time. It's action packed, overall the actors do a good job, the setting is beautiful and has a nice moral towards the end.

There are persons who go and exam the whole movie for plot holes, mistakes and all of that. To them I want to say: Can you really enjoy a movie? Every movie has mistakes, but they are made for you, millions are spend to give you a good time, be thankful...

Enjoy this movie for what it is, an entertaining sci fi action flick.

Nothing special
12 September 2002
This movie is nothing more than another action movie. It has some nice action scenes and that's about it. Denzel Washington's role is overrated. The only thing that gave him the oscar is that he never played the villain. But his acting isn't that great.

It's just like if Tarantino would win an oscar for making a Disney movie...

Halloween (1978)

the first is the best.
5 January 2002
Before i saw halloween 1(a week a go!) i saw halloween part 3,4,5,2,H20. But none of these parts are as great as the first.

Part 2 till 5: Michael always comes back in the same way, he breaks out of the institution and goes to chase jamie lee curtis, or other teenagers. just a little hack slash and a part is done.

H20: is in my opinion a scream spin off, using Josh Hartnett and ll cool j for being a hip movie.

Dont get me wrong i enjoyed these movies, cause i'm a great horrorfan. But when i saw part 1 i saw the thing what was missing in the other parts: A chilling intense flavour. You see Michael from a distance, his shoulder, in the car and standing in your backyard, just watching. Thats the most import factor in this movie: Suspense. An hour of suspense and an half hour horror. The greatest thing John Carpenter ever made...

very special movie with some strange feelings inside
1 December 2001
My Brother rented this movie when it came out, and i watched it with a pillow(i was ten years old back then, and didn't watch scary movie or violent ones). But after a half an hour i took away the pillow and watched it with great interests. The only scary thing for me was looking at Brandon Lee and knowing that he was dead, it gave me a strange feeling.

After seeing this movie, my love for horror and violence got big, very big.

i give this movie 5/5 cause it is made in such a special way, you don't see that very often.

violent and sentimental, great and the best
18 August 2001
My personal favorite, is a story of a young man who likes to do naughty things, like killing raping and stealing.

But one night he is caught by the police and putt him away.

After two years he gets a treatment, witch makes him forget what violent and sex mean for him, and he cant resist it anymore.

Then when he gets back in the real world, he almost dies, because now he is a simple soul, who can't do anything back to the people who hurt him.

Or is he...
