The Manitou (1978)
10/10
Better than any horror movie over the last 20 years
22 April 2023
There are many reasons that horror movies nowadays suck. They miss that 'human element', instead portraying people as unrealistic charicatures. They are irrational, unfeeling, and just pure nonsense. Horror movies used to portray characters with realistic relationships, realistic virtues and vices, etc... That was one of the main draws of horros of the 70's and 80's, and some of the 90's. Somewhere after that, directors just lost it. The Manitou is basically a perfect horror movie. Entertaining the whole way through, with characters and plot both original and interesting. This movie definitely deserves an 8-10 rating.

Japanese BEAUTY
16 December 2022
The artwork here is absolutely stunning. Even if this movie had a terrible storyline, which it doesn't, it would still be worth watching for the artwork! This is one of those classics that showed what humanity was capable of regarding animation. The Japanese were so meticulous, and spent so much time animating these movies... You should show your kids, and tell them how much work it took to animate scenes like this! It's truly a marvel of human effort!

Nowadays, in the days of "My hero academia" and "Boruto", you see a lot of slapdash animation... These old animes show you what it's all about! You could first show your kids random episodes of Boruto, and then show them this movie, and they'll immediately see the difference! New animation sucks. The standard has been lowered. Kinda understandable, but still, it helps to show the young generation what animators used to do in the 80's and early 90's.

All the Godfather movies suck!
9 December 2022
The scenes, lighting, props, etc, are great, especially in the first 2 movies, but the movies are actually poorly written and boring. The only reason everyone loves them and calls them "World-class" is because they are sheeple and can't form their own objective opinions. Objectively, these movies all suck. The first one is like a 5/10, the second one is like a 4.3/10, and the third one is a 1/10. Actors mess their lines up so many times in all of these movies and for some reason Coppola decided to leave it in... When a person messes up their speech in real life it sounds different than when an actor messes up their lines, and it's very unnatural... He made a big mistake leaving all these bloopers in the final cuts.

The director's ancestors should have been burned in the Salem witch trials

Seriously... I should have read about this guy's past works before watching this movie. Gerald's game was hot garbage, and I told myself never to watch anything by this director ever again. This movie could have been directed by a 6th grader, and blasphemes the good name of "The shining".

Reminds me of Lovecraft's mystery fantasy horror

Warning: Spoilers
You don't ever really figure out what the main bad guy is... you're lead to believe he's a vampire in the beginning, but it keeps changing, and this is why the movie is good.... The process that the main character goes through in discovering this guy's history and current story is the meat and bones of the story. And it works.

Doesn't deserve low ratings
13 April 2021
This movie has an original premise, good acting, well-done dialogue scenes, great cinematography, and a steady pace... It was a fun watch. The movie isn't very deep, and leaves you feeling pretty sad, so maybe that's why people rated it so low... But for horror fans, it's an interesting movie to watch to kill some time.

Dated and boring
12 April 2021
Cheesy music and cheesy acting, and very garish scenes despite mister Usher saying that any sort of bright lights hurt his eyes... you'd think the scenes would be eerie inside the house, but cameras in the late 1950's probably had terrible low-light capability.

FInally, the movie is hella slow. I actually fell asleep watching it the first time.

Skip this movie.

Doesn't deserve the one-star ratings
12 April 2021
There are a bunch of 1-star reviews for this, but it had good cinematography, good acting, and an original premise.

So it doesn't deserve to be rated that low.

However, it's got a few issues with the plot... I don't like where they decided to go with it in the end. It wasn't believable.

Overall, it was almost worth watching 4.6/10.

An accurate IMDB rating - FOR ONCE!
10 April 2021
This is a horror movie.

It explains everything by the end.

It is original and acceptable.

It has tension and suspense, albeit it's weak.

It's still better than 90% of horror movies coming out nowadays, so yeah.

Worth a watch if you're a horror fan and need something to fill the lonely bored void that is your spare time.

Deserves a 6/10 for the scene at 1:14:00

The overall movie is kinda meh, the characters aren't that likeable, and the ones who die are often the ones you like the most... The biggest plus is the alien scenes.

Underrated
8 April 2021
I got kinda confused at the end, but the movie successfully evokes emotions throughout, and while it is thick with plot at some moments, you're interested enough to put down whatever else you're doing and pay attention. That's a win, for me.

Fun watch. Hits home to couples unwilling to have kids
5 April 2021
It also hits home to anyone who isn't fulfilling their potential in life. There are some good scenes with the evil angels where they talk about why humans are so loathsome... Because they have such high potential, but they are so crippled by fear that they do nothing with their lives. For this reason alone I gave the movie a 9/10... In all reality it's total B-movie quality... The acting is really bad, the lines are very on-the-nose, and the special effects look very low budget (Albeit pretty good... you really can feel the gravity of the fight scenes)

Succession (2018–2023)

Plot thin enough to watch in background
4 March 2021
I watched this after finishing Billions and wanting something similar. A few things bothered me... The camera is often shaky, and the sudden zoom onto people's faces seems pointless and distracting. Some characters are cartoonish, moreso than Billions. The plot relies on sensational cliches, such as the son freaking out about hard butter at the dinner and telling the whole staff they're fired, and in the next scene, after the guests tell him what a great dinner it was, he runs to the kitchen and tells the staff they're the best staff in the world... Cliche and cheesy. The acting is overall on point. As the series progresses, the camera gets less and less shaky, and those quick zoom-in's on the faces are less frequent.
