The Stray (2000)
A calamity of a movie...
Its hard to believe that Michael Madsen could swoop so low and make such a calamity of a movie. Didn't he pick up any tips from Tarantino during Reservoir Dogs..tut, tut, tut
First of all, the car chase at the beginning of the movie is from Basic Instinct (literally...except the inside the car shots...that for me was pretty pathetic)
As the film evolves, however, it just get worse. A poor script, bad acting and sloppy, unattractive directing is a basic summary of this movie. The music of the film is also pity-full.
Oh, by the way, the story is about this cop (Madsen) on pursuit of a killer. His partner gets killed and the killer wriggles his way into the cop's girlfriend's life. The film has a dark secret which is supposed to keep you "glued" to the screen...
My advice is don't make the same mistake I did and watch it...Just think about all the other things I could have done instead ...like make a salad or wash my dog...
Manhunter (1986)
A great film..thumbs up all round!!
This film was not only far ahead of its time but also a fantastic bit film making (Michael Mann once again hits the spot) in every sense of the word.
All the actors are brilliant especially Tom Noonan, Brian Cox and William Peterson.
I personally rate this film higher than silence of the lambs mainly because of the atmosphere of the movie. Its a very psychological film with bright colours and a music score that would make any director proud. I won't mention the plot but you can guess...(serial killers,,,detective,,,lector.....need I say more)
On the whole, the film is brilliant and if you haven't watched it...WATCH IT!!!
The Pledge (2001)
Could Have Been So Much Better
I was very disappointed after watching this film. I very much expected to see a more chilling story with good twists and superb acting. The acting was very second rate despite Jack Nicholson and the small appearance of Benicio De Toro and as for twists, well...they are more like pot holes.
The story is about a retired detective who pledges to a murdered girl's parents that he will find the killer even after he is retired....sounds good heh...don't keep your hopes up......
I'm sure the director, Sean Penn, could have done a much better job. Two good points about the movie is the music (nice one again Mr. Zimmer) and the very impressive cinematography.
Boogie Nights (1997)
A Great Film!!!
This film was for me a very impressive piece of work. All the acting, music and story is superb with the best acting, for me, coming from Julianne Moore and Burt Reynolds.
This film takes you behind the mind-boggling but mostly sad life of the porno industry and who are the people behind the pornographic characters and cameras.
The story follows a young man (Wahlberg) and how he was snapped up (or shall I say sucked into pornography) by an ambitious porno director (Reynolds) who later realizes a unique gift that the young man has. The film then highlights the success and sadness in not just the main acting role of the film but of also the surrounding characters.
This film is a must see for the more open minded viewers and should not be looked on as an excuse just to see sex.
From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money (1999)
Not nearly as good as the first one!
This film is still good although it is no way as good as the first film. I think Whitaker had some good ideas although I think the lack of money to make the movie might have taken the "bite" out of the film.
The film is roughly about some slick, mean bank robbers that rob a bank and confront some Mexican police in the process. Trouble is....two of the bank robbers are vampires leading to a grand, and shall I say, bloody finale.
The special effects are below par but still gruesome and all in all I would say that this film is worth watching once.....and thats it!
By the way, what the hell is the T-1000 doing in this film?????
