Dysfunctionality at its funniest
10 July 2005
This movie has this quite rare, definitely not mainstream vibe to it. Following in the footsteps of movies like "Garden State" or "Beautiful Girls", it tells of the amazing journey that people sometimes take when they revisit their childhood life.

In this case, the turmoil revolve about a totally dysfunctional family, where the lack of respect and acceptance makes for some of the funniest quotes I've had the pleasure to hear and laugh to!!

A really unexpected treat, I loved how Michael Clancy plays that neurotic line in such a subtle gamma of characters and personalities: the true mark of a people's lover movie. Amazing job, and I look forward to the next one.

Its easy: just don't watch Fox
23 November 2004
The documentary, although flawed (which republican is going to actually view it with an open mind...?), has some major points and the annihilation of "journalism" as it is known elsewhere is made obviously.

What comes out as obvious is the fact that, as a person puts it, this form of control is even more vicious than authoritarian governments: leaving the people "free" of believing that they are indeed free and well informed is a machiavelic way of control. What is sad is that it works so well.

Watch it, just so as to make sure you never watch Fox (ever or ever again).

And the point was?
24 August 2004
An overall very interesting documentary, yet it kind of lacks a clear point. Yes the US military lies through its teeth, yes they try to manage the information, yes Al Jazeera is partial, but nothing is really new.

What amazed me what Lt.Rushing's evolving conscience throughout the movie. I wish all pro-war people could have the guts to put themselves out there too and envision another point of view the way he did. I read that he got in serious trouble after this documentary. For once, a genuine military press officer: it deserves praise. Congratulations to you mister Rushing.

Inspired and forgetful good end to the trilogy.
17 December 2003
Despite the major disappearances in that script compared to the subtleties of the books that any fan will regret, this is still a great last chapter.

Many trilogies never lived up to the first chapter that enticed crowds so much, the Matrix being the worst recent example!

Here, all that really matters is present but I wish to raise one point: the real philosophy behind Tolkien's book gets twisted by the absence of Tom Bombadil and the scourging of the Shire. The power corrupts all and those two examples were fundamental, yet missing in Jackson's script.

Tolkien's love for Nature and hate of rampant industrialisation was really one of the final notes of the book. It's missing here but it's still a great film.

Indians are still a delicate subject...
20 May 2003
I have a short comment to make about this amazing masterpiece: why is it that most people give it an 8 leading to a 7.7??

I cannot see any major flaw that would deserve such treatment. Thus the only explication that pops to mind is that Indians and their treatment in US history is still seen as a delicate subject by most US IMDB voters...

This movie is a sheer masterpiece and deserves nothing less than a 8.5+ rating!

My personal rating is obviously 10.

Far Away From Home...
3 March 2003
This stand-up amazingly depicts the orphan feeling as well as the constant amazement that comes from leaving your home and loved ones to go establish yourself abroad.

Gad Elmaleh is a genious: subtle, dynamic, sharp, he's always getting the funny side as well as the moving part of all his characters.

He's an absolute must!

The Last Look in The Mirror...
4 April 2002
The Last Look in The Mirror... This one is Hollywoodian and yet subtle. Having the strength to look at yourself and simply *admit* that the last 10 years of your life were a total failure is hard thing to do. Even more when life is coming to an end...

It's even harder to film it in a delicate, not too emotional way. This movie almost succeeded in doing that yet it has some of the oh-so-Hollywoodian features, which brings it to a very good movie, whereas it could have been great.

Yet I just love that movie. When he asks for a model to take with him and is denied that (when he just got fired), he takes the one he wants and trashes all the rest to finally confront his boss: "You're a great architect but a lousy human being. - Yeah? Well you're not even an architect and you're a lousy human being! - ...You're right. You win."

Further than sarcasm, there's the redemption (and I mean it in a totally non religious way) of a man finally able to acknowledge how lame he's become. Now that's the toughest thing to do, and it takes a lot of courage to be able to do it.

Kevin Kline is just perfect for the role.

9/10.

Lost on the Wacky Island, Lost in the Wacky Scripting
3 April 2002
Now this is the kind of film I watched without any idea of what I'd watch. It's basically the story of 4 business men on a "team building" weekend, where they set off to a remote island and end up being stuck on it. Soon all the hidden stories and rivalries start appearing...

That's a fairly good set, especially with low life businessmen working for a sparkling water company. Yet it fails to deliver.

All characters, albeit pretty funny are always depicted as somewhat moronic and quite honestly, I missed the writer's love for his own characters. Hence, you come up with a film that leaves you fairly not satisfied with the character development...

Being obviously subjective, I will take the imdb rating (5 being nothing special) and give it a 6. It definitely could have ranked higher, had the script be more subtle and generous.

Playing with your mind...
3 April 2002
The Game is, together with Usual Suspects, one of the best scripts ever.

Sean Penn is the perfect counterpart to over cynical Michael Douglas, and all blends in perfectly. It's a dangerous game to play with people's mind, especially if they are about to fall... but this is a , somewhat idealized I'll give you that, very subtle and efficient way of doing it.

Sit back and enjoy this masterpiece of a script!

10/10 !

From Cliche to Cliche, and still driving..
5 March 2002
It is pathetic that the average of such a movie be 7.1. I usually tend to consider that any Hollywood movie that it using just about the same usual recipe for suspense movie is not worth watching. I also turn to this site for knowledgeable insights on movies from people who are true movie lovers. I was disappointed. Hasn't anyone seen Duel?? (which at least was a landmark movie)

Anyway, the story goes from cliche to cliche, ending in a cliche (damn, didn't see that one coming...). Can't the script writers give their audience a bit more credit?

Plus I am sorry: if you have someone's truck, you know pretty well who the guy is. Thus the oh-so-old trick of the ending going to pieces.

Anyway, spare yourself and your rentals. (5/10)

Cuuuuuuuuuuuuuut!
25 January 2002
Ok so, I am a big Spielberg fan (when he doesn't do films for money) and his film making has always been admirable. But, Steven, please, learn how to cut! I've seen it before, but that movie is too long by at LEAST half an hour... He could have stayed underwater forever... Sad but better than cheesy!

Overall it's all in all a good movie. But disappointment is there. Jude Law's performance is top notch however. And the kid never blinked (in case you didn't notice).

Signing out.

Dumb, Dumber & Beverly Hills (sic)
25 January 2002
I usually don't write comments. But to see that this is a "Funny, cute and charming" movie just was the necessary incentive.

This, among many other, is the perfect example of a decerebrated movie for teenagers. Even then, I am sure few black teens would appreciate it. It's SO Hollywoody-American (and meant to be) that I really can't go any higher than 5.

Keep your brain in shape, see something else.
