A Beautiful Mind (2001)
Unforgettable
On my 8th viewing, and A Beautiful Mind is just as beautifully crafted and mesmerising as on the first watch. The story, the shots, and the sounds all work together to completely immerse us in John Nash's experiences, making this so engaging to watch again and again. Masterful direction from Ron Howard, with fully realised and heartwarming performances from the cast. Unforgettable.
The Love Punch (2013)
One for all the family
Light hearted comedy somehow walking familiar ground but making it fresh. A great film for all 3 (or 4) generations of the family to enjoy!
Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines or How I Flew from London to Paris in 25 Hours and 11 Minutes (1965)
Escapist fun, perfect relaxing movie!
Pure escapism, equal opportunity comedy, and great fun. No thinking necessary, which is a great selling point - perfect for vegging out in front of the telly and letting the day wash away.
The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020)
Wonderful performances, but boy does it get dull
An exciting start and an uplifting end. Fully realised performances from the ensemble that will surely warm your heart towards even the smallest of characters. A great job by writer/director Sorkin!
BUT the middle section of the film is bloated and arduous, spending too little time on the characters we came to see, and too much on the legal minutae in the courtroom.
1917 (2019)
Fan for Life!
Never before have I been unable to tear my eyes away from a film for even a second - THAT'S how great 1917 is! The way this is shot is pure genius: more is revealed about the world with every second that passes, as you travel with the two soldiers on their hero's journey, so you don't want to miss a thing. Every person involved deserves a medal, with the highest praise for Roger Deakins' cinematography and Sam Mendes' script and direction. I am now a fan for life.
Sober City (2020)
Sitcom in an Uncanny World
Like a Russian Doll, this is a comedy nestled inside a tragedy. The eerily-lit environment never lets you forget that these characters are suffering and the laugh-out-loud banter is their escape. Funny and dark, and rounded off with a perfect final moment of the series. A thoughtful and bold offering from the filmmaker Blake Ostin, this is the darkest funny show that I've seen all year.
Red Velvet Revolution (2019)
Great Sci-Fi
Beautifully shot sci-fi story that feels like one of the happier episodes of Black Mirror. Great work from the filmmaker Viviana Di Capua. Although the climactic lines tend not to land, the acting is good overall, particularly from Emilie Sofie Johannesen.
Life of Brian (1979)
Biblical Setting, Modern Society
Sketches so well crafted that they electrify as both comedy and social commentary. Biblical setting with a very modern society being called out. Truth and hilarity at its finest.
Hot Fuzz (2007)
Rewatch Value: 100%
Engages your brain with the mystery, and your laughing muscles with the visual and verbal funny. HILARIOUS even when watching it a tenth time!
The Remains of the Day (1993)
Incredible - you will fall in love!
Three cheers for the director James Ivory who let his cast fly with some of the most heartbreaking and exciting performances of their careers. Emma Thompson, Anthony Hopkins. Out of this world.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018)
Too Much Effort to Change the Channel
Like Jurassic World, but without the charm, story, scenery, or surprises. Actors did their best, but my hopes for this film died faster than that island. Kept it on because the remote was on the other side of the room... It didn't get better.
Dante's Peak (1997)
What science is this?
It was good enough until the special effects were needed... and then it stopped feeling real and I stopped caring. If you also paid attention to the volcano exhibit on your school field trip to the natural history museum, then you might want to give it a miss.
The Towering Inferno (1974)
THE Disaster Movie.
Gets it right where modern disaster films get it wrong: The Towering Inferno is shout-out-loud suspenseful, unpredictable, and you CARE about the individuals in the building and the people putting their lives on the line. If you're bored of seeing The Rock save the day again with barely a scratch, then this film is the tonic you need.
Rebecca (2020)
Get the book instead.
Lily James and Kristin Scott Thomas offer some of their best performances in their careers in this film... but are let down by a flimsy storyline with an ending that is patchy to the point of nonsense. Get the book instead.
