The Godfather (1972)
The greatest American film of the last fifty years
It's such an iconic piece of cinema - no matter how many times I catch this on TV, I never change the channel. It's such a mythic study of power. Coppola never needed to make another film, but fortunately he did, creating three more classics within the same decade - The Godfather Part II, The Conversation and Apocalypse Now.
The Godfather is just timeless, with such pitch perfect performances, cinematography, direction, editing, music, production design, sound design... the list goes on. This film and its sequel is the high water mark of American cinema in the latter half of the 20th century,
Rocky (1976)
Crowd pleasing classic
It's hard to forget how wonderful the first Rocky film truly is. Just ticks all the boxes - definite crowd pleaser with a rousing finale that always elicits strong emotions. Pure joy.
Raging Bull (1980)
Iconic, challenging, masterful.
De Niro has never been better. Scorsese is at the top of his game. Truly one of the greatest American films ever made.
Joker (2019)
Great performance
Phoenix delivers another great performance to his already outstanding career. That's what the 8/10 is for. The rest is just an homage to Scorsese - a nicely rendered homage, nonetheless.
Gisaengchung (2019)
Unforgettable
Just an amazing film on every level. I've seen it multiple times and discover something new on every viewing. Great to see Hollywood acknowledge world cinema with it's highest honour. Wow.
Kairos (2019)
Powerful
This one completely slipped under my radar. Took a few days to really sink in. It's a very unconventional and unpredictable film that really sneaks up on you. Took me a while to process it - it's a pretty layered and has an ending that really stays with you. For a small film, it's beautifully realised. Jerome Pride is outstanding, and Chris Bunton smashes any and every stereotype you can think of as the main character Danny.
