Operation: Mystery! (1968–1971)
The stuff childhood nightmares are made of
9 January 2005
Warning: Spoilers
This was one of those TV-Shows you probably saw as a kid and never forgot. As far as I remember it focused on some special police unit in tokio which was up to investigate strange criminal cases.

Let's say a sort of X-Files decades before Scully and Mulder hit the road. What was burned into (not just) my brain where some images of a very creepy quality and some few scenes like: A little boy hypnotized to walk to the edge of a broken bridge by a bad guy.

A really scary witchlike creature appearing from the midst of a lake turning over a rowboat.

A magician doing a "houdini" and getting squished to a bloody pulp under water - still screaming and kicking.

I can only judge from some blurred memories, but some images still appear in my most interesting dreams so it seems this show really hit a point.

And to add to the confusion - I'm a big horrorfan and nothing really shocks me anymore. I watched the Exorcist first around the same time and even if it's still one of my alltime favourite movies none of it's images haunt me like this.

So the question is - with all the crap released on DVD now where are such items hidden? :(

Malefique (2002)
France - the new horror-country
23 June 2004
First of all - I hate french movies. I dunno why, but I simply can't stand them it seems. I didn't like "Brotherhood of wolves", I was bored by "Delicatessen", I slept through "Taxi". So one can say that watching "Malefique" was a big step for me - especially because it was praised high by people who liked all the mentioned movies.

But I have to admit, this time they where absolutely right. "Malefique" has a very gripping atmosphere and grabs the viewer from the first second. The characters are believable (but not likable), the setting is really claustrophobic and the story has enough twists and turns to keep even the most cynical horror fan guessing what's coming up next.

There's even enough splatter to keep the gore hounds awake and - absent from a surprise ending that's not exactly surprising - the movie is mostly original and doesn't copy anything you've ever seen before. Also very interesting is that - even if the whole movie plays in a prison - you won't get the usual clichés.

So with "Malefique" and "Haute Tension" (wich also is great but in a totally different way) it seems that french horror is again something to keep your eyes on.

Meat Market 2 (2001 Video)

Gore - but sadly not more :(
27 November 2003
I love Zombie-Movies and I love amateur-productions. And Meat Market 2 starts really promising with a nice homage to Fulci´s Classic "Zombi".

So I leaned back and waited to be impressed. Okay, some of the makeups are great for such a no budget movie and some actors (the vampirelady and the cook) really stand out, but else there´s nothing.

I didn´t expect a new Romero here but there is not one sequence in the whole movie which has even a little bit of suspense or shock value. The director sure knows how to stage body rippings and interesting eating habits, but now (after two parts) it´s time to learn something more.

In MeatMarket2 Gore rhymes with bore - for me that´s not enough - sorry.

Ulzana's Raid (1972)
Get the uncut German TV-Print
25 October 2003
There´s not much more to say about this masterpiece what´s not already in all the other comments.

But a few years ago the german TV-station WDR restored Ulzana´s Raid and re-added about ten minutes of violence and sadism. Also the print in in an delicious widescreen format and the color and sound are cleaned up a lot.

The only problem of course is the dubbing which is ridiculous at times, but thats no big deal compared to the possibility to see Ulzana in it´s full version. Get it. :)

Robin - and just Robin
11 October 2002
He´s a great comedian, he´s a great actor, he´s a nice guy - but would he be able to go back to the roots? Just a lonely figure on an stage - and the only things to play with are about 20 bottles of water....

He suceeds - in a way that will surely make you laugh tears. I had to stop the tape about ten times during my first view, because i had to catch breath.

Robin the standup-comedian is a great mix between the obcenitys of a guy like Andrew Dice Clay and the "little guy"-appereance of f.E. the early Steve Martin. And even if he gets really rough at times, there´s still this "hey, its just me - Robin"-feeling he gives you with just a little grin.

His ability as a character-actor helps his performance a lot - this is Standup-Comedy the way it has to be: Crazy, fast, over the top and with a little bit more deepness you would expect. A sure winner!!

Oh my God - Unbelievable dumb
26 September 2001
If you think you saw every bad movie in the world - this turkey is worse.

It´s the "new" story of a guy named Thor whose parents got killed by a bad guy named Gunt in the beginning. With the aid of a strange magician (who transformes into a Owl from time to time) he grows up to be a great warrior. But first he has to find a magic sword (yawn), kill hordes of bad looking cannibals and learn to make love (just kisses are allowed here).

The whole pic was shot in a small forest, the only buildings (sort of) are three strawhuts which stand in for a village and a cave which hides the sword.

To name the performances "acting" would be unfair to any school-theatre-group, to call the work of the director "directing" would be against any good taste. But the worst of all are the "fight-scenes" and there many of them in this stinker.

Don´t rent it - ignore it, and if you see it through any bad coincidence - wash your eyes and try to forget this wasted time. It´s not even so bad its good - trust me
