The funniest 10 minutes I can remember
15 November 2005
I laughed, I cried, I almost peed my pants. A must see!

It's basically a black-and-white slide show with a voice-over... but somehow it impressed me more than all of the high budget special effects films that have come out lately. The little stuffed dog gives an INCREDIBLE acting performance.

I would never have thought I'd want to buy a DVD of a ten-minute movie, but I just bought this one after seeing the short film on cable TV. I guess I liked this movie a lot more than 12 Monkeys, because I just spent fourteen dollars to buy a 10-minute movie, and I wouldn't pay $1.40 per minute for 12 Monkeys!

Loved the first four-fifths...
22 February 2005
I expected to love this movie. For a good hour and a half, I was not disappointed. But looking back at it as a whole, I would have to give it only about 7 out of 10.

I loved almost everything up through the title fight. The only exception was the comically stereotypical portrayal of Maggie's family.

I could have handled the melodrama at the end if it had been portrayed more realistically, but instead it came across as manipulative and shallow.

Without exception, though, Hillary Swank is amazing throughout. Her character was a great mix of sweetness and toughness, attitude and humility.

Exceeded my expectations
30 August 2004
This movie sounded like one I would like, and turned out to be one I *love*.

I found the main characters both believable and surprisingly likable. Movie-makers like to portray the couples in this type of movie as bickering, selfish, loveless bastards who in some way deserved it. These people were nice, funny, and seemed to genuinely *like* each other. Through the whole movie, I wanted so much for them to be okay again. I was not bored at all. I thought the plot was very plausible, the acting was good, and the ending satisfied me although it was not at all what I was expecting. I was particularly happy that some humor was thrown in here and there - in the middle of being all tense and worried, we were able to laugh out loud at some of the conversations.

I gave it ten stars!

Not a political stance at all
18 August 2004
Warning: Spoilers
Possible spoilers ahead.

I don't think this movie was a political stance at all. How can it be, when the "liberal" anti-death-penalty group portrayed is just a bunch of fanatics? Yes, it showed their point of view and did not show the pro-death-penalty point of view, but since they are discredited by the end as, basically, lunatics... the movie is NOT taking their side. It is not taking any side - it's just your basic mystery/thriller/law drama.

The movie plot has a lot of holes to me - the biggest being what's the point of the whole interview process anyway? The tape was already in existence and could have been released by anyone. So why play with the reporter?

I wanted to like this movie, but just couldn't.

Melancholia
9 June 2004
This documentary struck a great emotional chord with me. Just reminded me of what it felt like to be a kid in the 70s trying to figure out who you were. Yeah, the men/women talk about their teenage selves like they were superheroes - but that's exactly how I like to remember those years in my life, too. ;) And I didn't do anything quite as cool as those kids did.

I love this movie because it shows the people and the developing sport of skateboarding as being truly products of their environment. Where you grow up, what you see, and who you hang with - these things create you. It was great to see people looking back on that, acknowledging it, accepting it, and taking pride in it. Yeah, maybe a little too much pride in some cases...

Interesting to see where everyone ended up at the end.

Oh, and a good soundtrack.

I bought the movie and will watch it many times over the years, I'm sure.

Lawn Dogs (1997)
Rich/poor too simple, but good movie
28 January 2003
Warning: Spoilers
There were not many characters in this movie, and they are portrayed with a "rich-people-are-bad, poor-people-are-good" theme that is of course far too simplistic... But the main relationship between Devon and Trent just fascinates me and makes this movie a keeper in my book.

Possible spoilers ahead:

I like the way Devon keeps flip-flopping about who or what is "evil". First evil is some vague thing outside the gated community. Then the evil is in Trent's trailer. When she and Trent are becoming good friends, the evil is something that is after the two of them. When Devon kills the dog, suddenly Devon sees him as the evil one. And then when Trent is hurt, she changes her mind again. I remember being scared of adults when I was a kid, never knowing which ones I should trust or not, and so Devon's confusion rang true with me.

As for the friendship, it brought tears to my eyes over and over. Yes, girls are not and should not be encouraged to wander into the woods after strange men. But Devon was lonely for a FRIEND, and Trent was lonely for a FRIEND (as most men would be - the few perverts unfortunately give all men a bad name). Devon's interest was so simple and pure - I loved the scene when Trent cut his finger, for example. Devon's view of the friendship was a prepubescent one where sticking someone's finger in your mouth is platonic, but Trent as an adult of course saw reason to freak out. I like that this movie completely avoided the "I have a crush on you" scene that almost every movie involving a girl and a man throws in - there was no "crush" here, just true friendship.

This movie made me remember being a ten-eleven-twelve year old girl and romanticizing everything that happened, but in a romantic-innocent way instead of in the romantic-sexy way that hit five or six years later! That's part of what made me sniffle during the movie - life will just never look quite like that again I'm afraid...

I am so confused
29 August 2002
It's good for people to have fun, and so I guess I'm glad that so many people had so much fun seeing this movie, but...

I don't usually write negative reviews. I just want anyone else out there who hated this movie to know that they are not alone. I feel completely flabbergasted by all the positive reviews I see on IMDb, and by the fact that the movie is back in my local theater as I write this. I thought it was one of the worst movies I had ever seen - no conflict, no character, no point, and nothing that made me laugh. I felt nothing while I sat in the theater except that I hoped my partner wouldn't hate me too much for suggesting we see this movie.

Sorry to be so negative. I do have something important to say - if you liked this movie a lot, and you look at the movies that IMDb recommends based on this movie, you might be in for a shock. For some strange reason, IMDb recommends the movie "Happiness" for those of you who enjoyed "Big Fat Greek Wedding". "Happiness" has got to be the most dark, traumatic, disturbing, emotionally draining, and horrifying movie I have *ever* watched. I can only assume it is on the recommendations list as a mistake, or as a horrible joke. It is the exact opposite of a "feel-good movie".

My recommendation for a good wedding movie is "Monsoon Wedding" - a brilliant mixture of love, hate, jealousy, anger, forgiveness, passion, joy, hope, and melancholia - I saw it a few weeks after "Big Fat Greek Wedding" and thought "Now THERE'S a wedding movie!"

Blood Work (2002)
Ouch!
28 August 2002
Warning: Spoilers
I used to like Clint Eastwood, but I just don't know anymore.

SPOILERS!!!! Major SPOILERS ahead!!!

I found this movie predictable in the worst possible ways. My partner and I kept looking over at each other and saying things like "he'll be sleeping with her in about fifteen minutes", "I bet both murders were by the same person", "I bet it was the code killer guy trying to get Clint a heart", "I bet the little kid will solve the code", "I bet the bad guy is right on top of the boat", and the unforgivable "I bet his best friend will turn out to be the killer".

And we were right every time. I kept hoping we wouldn't be, partly because I wanted to be surprised and partly because everything we predicted was so horribly cliche and unrealistic to the point of being ridiculous.

And I forgot to mention that the acting was not good.

Better now than when I was 11
13 August 2002
I remember this movie from when I was a kid. I remembered it fondly, and always pictured Pacino giving the big "This whole courtroom's out of order!!" speech.

I just rented it again after not seeing it for about twenty years, and WOW! There's a lot more to remember than that one speech. I absolutely loved this movie! I always like Pacino, but sometimes he just plays a similar character over and over. In this one, young Pacino got to play everything from scared to sad to funny to furious... and I thought he did great. I haven't felt for a character so much in quite a while.

The relationship between Pacino and his "leading lady" was a good one, especially for the '70's. I thought those two characters were interesting together.

The music sucked, but every movie soundtrack at that time sounded like a porno flick, didn't it?

It's a story where one bad thing after another happens in a short period of time, in very unrealistic (we all hope!) fashion - but that's a whole movie genre in itself (although I don't know what you'd call it), to make us think of lots of different things and to push the main character over the edge. Without all the subplots, I don't think the ending would have made as much sense.

I'd like a copy for my video library, and I don't say that often.

xXx (2002)
X-Games, The Movie
12 August 2002
There were stunts in this movie so outrageously unbelievable and silly, that I could not laugh hard enough to express my feelings, so I had to bounce in my chair and pull my hair as well... But that's what I went for. Adrenaline-rush action, fun and over-the-top stunts, and cheesy plot/dialogue - that's what the previews promised, and I feel that's what I got.

It doesn't pretend to be what it's not - it's a bunch of guys jumping motorcycles, snowboarding, speeding cars, jumping out of airplanes, parasailing... with a plot thrown in to run all the stunts together, and Diesel's gravelly voice throwing in corny one-liners.

If you like the X-Games and seeing things blow up, give it a try. I anticipate (with pleasure) a video game along the lines of "Stuntman" based on this movie.

And for the record, I'm female, mid-30's, responsible, educated, etc. - so it's not just for teenaged boys.

Training Day (2001)
Didn't like it much
12 June 2002
Warning: Spoilers
I thought the bad guy was "too bad". Maybe there are people in the world who are that bad, but I don't find movies about them very interesting. I did not see any complexity in his character at all, and no redeeming qualities - the witch in Wizard of Oz was more likeable.

As for the "good cop", he was just a greedy wimp. (SPOILERS) Sure, he turns down the buttload of money he's offered after the bad guy kills the drug dealer... but does that matter? Through most of the movie he puts up with or participates in illegal activities "against his will" - why? - because he wants to work his way up the ladder to a better job - why? - for the MONEY. "You should see the houses THEY live in" he says to his wife in the first scene. He acts so righteously offended by the bad cop right from the beginning, but goes along and goes along because he wants to attain his career goals. Some moral high-ground, huh?

The bad cop was bad right from the start - the rookie had no reason to respect him, take his advice, or want to follow in his footsteps. I much prefer corruption movies where the bad guy's evilness slowly leaks out into the story, and where the rookie at first has reason to trust and respect him. The moral dilemma and internal conflict of having to change your view of someone is just much more interesting than knowing from the start that he's a jerk.

So the two main characters just left me feeling nothing except annoyed.

Then, there's the plot. I found too many things hard to swallow - that Washington's character was so very very bad and had apparently never been caught at it (yeah, there are corrupt cops, but this was too much), that he would involve the rookie in THAT MUCH corruption on his first day as a "test" of his character, that Washington's character thought even for a second that the rookie would just buy into his bulls*** and cover for him... I thought it was contrived and basically made no sense.

The only thing that I *did* like plot-wise was the most contrived thing of all - the young woman the rookie saved turning out to be the cousin of the man who later would have killed him. Now THAT'S a contrivance I would have liked if the rest of the movie hadn't annoyed me so much. Sure, it's totally unrealistic, but at least it had some sort of point to make.

All in all, it kept me awake and provided minimal entertainment. It was interesting seeing Washington being a bad man. But I wouldn't see it again or recommend it.

Bad Company (2002)
Laugh after laugh
10 June 2002
I laughed so hard through the first half of this movie that I probably bothered people. The second half wasn't as good for me - too much "action", not enough funny stuff. But then again, Anthony Hopkins got to do a fight scene, and that was hysterical.

Hopkins must have had fun doing this movie - I hope he did. I sure had fun watching it.

The plot was pretty lame, but I didn't care. I went to see how good the comedy would be between Rock and Hopkins, and I was not disappointed. I love it when Hopkins gets to be funny.

There was a lot of swearing, but no "gross" jokes that I can remember, and no sexy stuff either really. There was a group of fifty-something people behind me who couldn't stop laughing and said "That was great!" at the end of the show. Me and my friends (thirty-somethings) thoroughly enjoyed it. I would imagine teenagers would get a kick out of it, too.

It's not going to be a classic or anything, but I'm glad I gave it a chance. I think it deserves far higher than the IMDB rating it has received so far.

I loved it
17 February 2002
I thoroughly loved this movie. I felt so sad for the characters, and so hopeful for some of them. I thought the two main characters had a lot of chemistry together, and were actually a very believable pair. I liked the dialog (or lack thereof) in most of the movie. I liked it that no one gave big Hollywood speeches about what they had learned and how they felt - we were left to figure out how they probably felt.

I am now completely convinced that Billy Bob Thornton, as psycho and neurotic and obsessive as he may be in real life, is one hell of an actor.

I will see this again, definitely.

Snatch (2000)
I liked it, is that so wrong?
6 February 2002
I am a 33 year old woman in a flowered dress who doesn't drink, rarely swears, sleeps with a teddy bear, and has never raised a hand to anyone in my life. But I liked this movie a lot, and according to someone who wrote a review earlier, that makes me personally responsible for the violence in America. I'm sorry - I never intended to hurt anyone.

As for the movie - I usually get confused in fast-paced movies with so many characters, but when I watched Snatch I was able to keep all the characters straight pretty easily because each one had something unique and quirky about him. I liked that, and I liked the accents, and I liked the silly plot-twist humor, and I liked the dogs. The evil men were EVIL ("so evil you would call it the froo-its of the dev-eel" to quote Mike Meyers). The bumbling men were endearing. The music was great.

It was very violent (more so than Pulp Fiction, I think). Yet somehow it did not offend me and looking back at it I still laugh out loud.

Oh, and I never saw "Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels", for whatever that's worth.

Jacob's Ladder (I) (1990)
ghost? what ghost? (spoilers)
31 October 2001
Warning: Spoilers
(SPOILERS!!)

I really loved this movie. I do not think he was a ghost. I think of it more like Slaughterhouse-5, time travel sort of stuff. He kept jumping forward and backward in time, from before the war to after the war to during the war and back again, never knowing where he was going to wake up next. He died in the war, but that doesn't mean the post-war stuff didn't happen, or that he was a ghost when it happened. I think he lived his life in random order, and happened to die in the middle of his life instead of at the end of it like one would expect.

Each time he woke up, he didn't know which woman would be in bed next to him, or if his son was alive or not. I particularly liked the part when he woke up next to Sarah, and he said "I had the worst dream. I was living with that woman Jezebel from the post office. It was horrible!", and then the look on his face when he woke up again in the bathtub with Jezebel next to him.

All in all, I just felt so much for Tim Robbin's character, and I was so caught up in the whole experience of the war scenes and the hallucinations... I have watched this one twice, and I will watch it again.

Return to Me (2000)
A wonderful, unrealistic, sappy romance
10 October 2001
When I tell people the basic plot, it sounds really dumb. But somehow I still really liked the movie.

I liked it because it's a movie I could take my mom and dad to, and we would all laugh. It was very innocent, but quite funny. And somehow, even though the plot was totally unrealistic, I bought it hook line and sinker while I was watching it.

And my boyfriend actually cried when that dog kept waiting at the door... CRIED, I tell you!

It's sappy romance that somehow works, in my opinion. I want to watch it again - Minnie Driver riding her bicycle is about the cutest thing since they invented puppies!

I forgot to say... Hope?!?!
13 September 2001
I already commented, but I've been thinking more...

As far as I'm concerned, true hope is knowing the truth and knowing that things can get better. What I saw the father offering his child in this movie was not hope, but denial and delusion.

It might work for small things, like "Aw, how cute, that rabbit fell asleep on the shoulder of the road". But this was ridiculous to me.

And the lie was even too lame to make sense... like even a little kid would believe that all those people were being starved and beaten and worse, all because they wanted to win a tank???

OH, yeah, I forgot - we didn't see anyone getting starved or beaten. But that's a whole other argument.

Not impressed...
13 September 2001
Warning: Spoilers
I finally rented Life is Beautiful yesterday. I was disappointed - and I wasn't expecting too much.

As a comedy it fell flat to me. The movie leading up to the characters' imprisonment bored me to tears - I did not find the slapstick funny, and I normally love slapstick. I found the main character (the father) annoying.

Once the plot moved to the concentration camp, I still did not find it funny, but that's fine with me as I would probably be mildly concerned if it was funny. The only thing I found very unique or interesting about the film was the made-up "game"... but that wore very thin and got boring, too.

Any genuine feeling I felt while watching this film came from inside me, from how I already feel about the Holocaust - the movie didn't move me at all.

SPOILER --

Well, I was moved a little, at the end. Moved to wonder "oh, my god, who is going to explain to that kid what REALLY happened, when and how will they explain it, and how will that make him feel??" But those were totally hypothetical questions, because I never really bought it that the "game" ruse would work.

END SPOILER--

From looking at the comments, it looks like I'm in the minority here. The movie didn't impress either of my housemates, either, though.

Metamorphosis
10 July 2001
I really didn't like this movie, but I did admire the acting. I did not know ANYTHING about the movie when I hit the "play" button, not even who was in it. After about five minutes of the beginning car-ride sequence I got this itchy feeling that I knew all three of the actors... First, I recognized Benicio Del Toro, then I thought that might be Tobey McGuire... I had to look on the box to figure out Johnny Depp. As in other movies I have seen, Depp made himself something totally new. That is impressive to me.

Other than that, though, I didn't find much to like. It didn't make me feel anything, and only made me laugh a couple of times. One of which was when Del Toro was trying to get off the revolving carousel bar thing - I liked that.

I guess I will have to try the book - maybe a lot of things are funnier to imagine than to actually *see*.

The Pledge (I) (2001)
Nice *subtle* surprises
6 July 2001
I liked this movie a lot, because it was very subtle in how it tricked me. Unlike movies like "The Sixth Sense" or "The Crying Game", this one did not feel like it was designed to completely mislead me and then slap me in the face with the truth. The Pledge just let me assume what I wanted to and see what I wanted to, and then fairly gently showed me that I had made an error in judgement.

It was pretty slow, yeah. Don't start it ten minutes before your normal bed time and try to stay up late to watch it - you might not make it through. But my partner usually chooses action flicks and comedies designed for those with a short attention span, and he wasn't bored with this one.

I liked Mr. Nicholson in this movie. In his last few movies it seemed to me he got away with just raising his eyebrow and giving that classic Nicholson crazy-man smile instead of *acting*. The Pledge was different for him.

Deep Blue Sea (1999)
Good movie for drinking beer and making fun of...
6 July 2001
If you want to have a few friends over, drink some beer or smoke some funny cigarettes and laugh at a truly corny movie, this is the one for you! I mean, come on, no one went to this movie actually expecting a GOOD MOVIE, did they???

I rented it and had several friends over as mentioned. It was a great party movie - characters that just make you yell "DIE, you ?!*$#%!!!", scenes where you cheer for the sharks, really horrible scientific jargon, blonde bimbos... It was particularly fun making bets on which characters would die and in what order (I thought it was pretty easy to guess).

Obviously don't rent this movie to impress your date. Don't rent this movie to engage in deep thought. I also don't think this movie would be worth watching alone, with no one to throw popcorn at or "boo" with.

But if you're silly and don't mind cheese, get a gang together and go wild. You might lose the respect of one or two of your friends, but only the more snobby ones who you don't need.

Oh, and one more thing - Please don't tell me it's a "guy movie". I'm a thirty-two year old woman.

I miss the days of giant animal monster movies: swarms of bees, huge tarantulas, etc. They were always so fun because they were always so BAD, and Lake Placid is no exception. I laughed and laughed.

And I love the poster picture!

Gets a big "boo" from me
2 July 2001
I was absolutely shocked by how much I disliked this movie. Active, aggressive dislike, not just boredom or disappointment. It grated on my nerves from start to finish!

And I'm usually quite susceptible to tear-jerkers and to fantasy stuff.

The only character with any personality that I could see was the animatronic teddy bear. That's not a good sign.

All the "human" robots were at best annoying and at worst downright creepy. I was not convinced that ANYONE would choose sex with the robots over, say, a sheep... The whole robot prostitute thing just made me squirm. Not to mention it took this film out of the "family movie" category as far as I'm concerned.

And the robotic child character? If I couldn't have children, and was faced with the choice of adopting that "boy", I'd say no thanks and get a dachshund.

And then there was the plot, which started out questionable and then progressed to just pure boring for the last third of the film. I just wanted them all to be killed!

Wow, I could go on. It still amazes me how much I disliked it. But one of my best friends thought it was very good. So whadda ya know?

I only own two movies, Willie Wonka and this one
2 July 2001
So maybe I just like colorful factories?!?

This movie charmed me. I liked the plot, the actors, the landscapes, the duck bed, the vitamin sandwich, the floating elephant, the dorky songs... I loved the opening scene, and the big battle scene as well.

It was strangely creepy fun like my all-time favorite, "Willie Wonka".

That said, I know people who considered it pure torture. We're still friends, though.

The Cell (2000)
It's hard to explain why I liked it...
28 June 2001
In general I avoid really violent movies. But this one looked so visually interesting from the previews that I thought I would try it. I told my partner that I would start it with him, and most likely walk out soon and go to the bookstore where he could find me when it was over.

But I stayed through the whole thing. And I liked it a lot. The grossness and violence did not affect me like I expected. Maybe that was a bad thing??? It was dream violence, in parts it was almost "cartoon" violence (Ren and Stimpy style - the intestine thing). The movie was so stylized and surreal that I enjoyed just looking at everything and going for the ride, even though the plot sucked, the characters were shallow, and the acting was mostly sub-par.

Actually, maybe it was because the acting was so bad and the characters so under-developed that the violence didn't bother me. I didn't really care.

Overall, another movie for those of us who enjoy the sensual (I do not mean beautiful) over the mental.
