Unbreakable (2000)
Not Quite
Well I guess we all have to fit into our own little niche, and I assume that applies to movies as well. This probably explains why I was extremely disappointed with this film. The trailers promised the world but the movie really delivered very little. As for the so called twist, well I honestly thought it was quite obvious, but I guess since I figured out the twist in the sixth sense, I must have a knack for these things. It really just didn't go anywhere, I got extremely bored and almost fell asleep. Don't get me wrong, I am a huge comic book fan and the concept was great, but the execution was mind-numbingly boring and since I felt my intelligence was insulted, I have decided that this one certainly wasn't going to slip into my 'niche' unless I underwent some type of lobotomy. I could think of better ways to spend my money, but on that note I could probably think of worse, too. You decide.
The Matrix (1999)
If you haven't seen this movie, get to the video store!!!!
This is the most fantastic movie I have ever seen!!! I know what you are thinking..."Yeh, but it's just another typical sci-fi movie for computer geeks and trekkies"...Not quite. This movie has it all!!! Computers, conspiracies, heroes, villains, Martial Arts, guns, robots, virtual reality, romance, trenchcoats, cool sunglasses and did I mention trenchcoats??? Take a breath before you start watching this one. I saw it four times at the cinema and twice on video!!! It has every twist and turn you can think of, and when your head isn't spinning from the plot, the special effects will have you jumping out of your seat. Watch out for the awesome martial arts choreography, too. If you haven't signed up for Tae-bo after this one, you never will!!
Cube (1997)
This is one freaky movie...
Cube is a movie that explores human nature and our instinctive urges for survival vs our humanitarianism. Not a new concept, I know, however this movie does it in style, with a plot so simple that it could only be the work of a conceptual genius. I don't intend to give too much away, as the power of the film lies in it's mystery, but I will say that this movie could almost be classified as disturbing, not due to its content, but rather the thoughts that it instills in the audience. I found myself rather shaken as I left the cinema, feeling as though I had been exposed to an ugly, hidden side of humanity and society. Don't get me wrong, this movie is definitely worth seeing, I would even be so bold as to say that it must be seen! I must admit that there are few movies I have seen that have had such a profound affect on me, and I don't think I am alone in my feelings.
The Game (1997)
Mind-blowing
This is such a great movie, it keeps you guessing to the end. All of these people raving about the twists in movies like 'The Sixth Sense' need to have a reality check and hire out this classic. The formula seems simple enough, take a middle aged business man with too much money and not enough time, make him part of a game that seems to be innocent enough but quickly becomes out of control, plunging his life into a nightmare of events that he can't escape, or can he??? Not so simple, anymore. Just when he thinks he's on top, the rules of the game change, leaving him wondering just who is one step ahead of who??? In the end, it is the audience who is left reeling. A must see for those of you with a taste for your more intelligent movies. Plus, Michael Douglas is in it, and that usually says a lot about the quality of the film.
Le Cinquième Élément (1997)
Rent it out!!!
Call me juvenile, call me a typical male, but I loved this movie!!! Take a hardened military man driving cabs for a living, throw in an ancient alien evil threatening to destroy the universe, make the only key to stopping it a hot redhead, and set it in the 23rd century!!! What have you got??? A shoot-em-up feelgood movie with a sci-fi twist, a sure fire hit. Been done a million times before, will be done another million!! Bravo to that, I say. It will be a sad day when Bruce Willis stops starring in roles where he shoots guns, makes wisecracks and ruins interpersonal relationships with any females he encounters...My only criticisms of this movie is that it didn't go for long enough, I could have watched it all day and that it doesn't have a sequel!
