...E tu vivrai nel terrore! L'aldilà (1981)
"Do Not Entry"
Well oh well. Just saw this one on the big screen and I noticed that there's one thing one must not do in order to really appreciate this creep fest: question anything. Like really, I once thought that I missed some major parts of the storyline because I just couldn't figure out how Fulcis "Gates of Hell"-trilogy (with "The Beyond" being the secon movie) could possibly make any coherent sense. Well, it just doesn't. Who cares? I don't and appreciate "The Beyond" for what it is: a creepy horror flick with a unique Fulci-atmosphere and some hilarious (in a good way) moments. "They Beyond" for me is by far the best part of the "Gates..."-trilogy. Recommended!
The Batman (2022)
Boooring.
I expected much...I shouldn't have! Having seen this movie might easily be the most disappointing cinema experience this year. 2022 is still young, I know, but it's hardly imaginable seeing any other movie this year where the gap between expectation and (my subjective) reality will be even bigger. What makes me say that? Well, to me, "The Batman" felt just like a painfully generic action film stretched to a 3 hour marathon of bombast and unrelatable overacting without any depth. It even made me think about leaving the cinema hall earlier. Don't get me wrong: I really DID enjoy "The Dark Knight", "The Dark Knight Rises" and especially "The Joker" (I know, this here is not a character study) but in comparison to those ones, at least to me, the new Batman almost feels like an obsessive attempt to make the cash tills ring.
Pig (2021)
Why?
What the heck was I just watching? An abduction of a pig makes a shady looking Nicolas Cage living in the Oregon wilderness go back to Portland in order to get his beloved pig back from evil truffel-mafia forces? I even had to stop after about an hour because nothing here really seemed to make sense to me. Overacting, non-cohesive plot, pseudo-philosophical interactions. Very unpleasant but what do I know? Maybe I just don't get it...
Prisoners (2013)
Best thriller I've watched in years!!
"Prisoners" is a perfect crime-thriller in every way: realistic, relatable, nerve-wrecking with absolutely brillant acting. Plus: the further the plot takes you the more it makes you question your own moral believes. Who judges what's right or wrong? Is law enforcement sufficient and reliable enough especially for desperate father's whose daughters were kidnapped by creepy strangers who, again, cannot be caught because of too little evidence? Highly recommended!
The House of the Devil (2009)
Well...
As a huge fan of everything old-school my expectations were quite high for this one and I did in fact enjoy it up until the point where I realized that, in the end, the slow but still exciting buildup only leads to a ridiculous climax which didn't appeal to me at all. The "mystery" going on here is pretty much random, doesn't really make sense and lacks originality. So, the ending, at least for me, just ruined all the positive aspects the movie could offer before. I expected more!
Incubo sulla città contaminata (1980)
Not a single boring second...what a trash-gem!!
I loved every moment of this one! Besides Romero's "Dawn of The Dead", Fulci's "Zombi 2", Cronenberg's "Rabid", etc. It's become one of my favourite late 70's early 80's Zombie-flicks. Apocalyptic atmosphere, trashy effects, diverse scenery and a thrilling buildup.
I don't know if it's just me or anyone can relate but when it comes to old-chool horror-movies, escpecially Zombie films, what usually turns me off is when most scenes were filmed in the dark. To me, it often times just feels kind of like a cost-saving method. But this is not the case here. Most scenes actually were shot outside in daylight which is a big plus for me.
"Nightmare City" still feels cheap in a way of course but that exact cheapness in combination with all good things mentioned above really do make a fun experience for most if not all old-school horror enthusiasts. Recommended!!
New Year's Evil (1980)
A reeally fun one...and I've seen a lot!
If you're looking for another entertaining late 70's/early 80's Slasher movie that offers nothing less than a thrilling & clever storyline, perfect 1980 vibes and great, great music (maan, these Shadow tracks are awesome!!) just go for this one. I really don't understand why "New Year's Evil" is rated so low. There are plenty other better rated Slasher flicks of the same kind that imho deserve less stars than this one. As an absolute old-school Horror/Slasher nerd myself I feel like "New Year's Evil" is too good fun for anything less than 6 stars so I give it a 7 out of 10 in hope of other genre enthusiasts more likely giving it a chance 🔥
Nobody (2021)
High expectations.Big disappointment.
I absolutely love Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul; therefore my expecations were quite high for this one. What I actually did expect was an original storyline, character development and effective plot twists. What I got was just a more than generic, another off-the-shelf action movie that didn't really offer anything besides a nice fight-scene in the bus. The rest is dispensible! What hurts me most is the lack of realism (one man can kill how many people at once? C'mooon) and originality as far as the storyline is concerned. I mean, seriously, there are probably dozens of action movies that are based around the same 'ol story. Not for me!
