In & Out (1997)

Good Film/Better Acting
6 December 2003
In & Out is a comedy with a simple premise. It admirably succeeds in the mission of being funny and entertaining.

The comedy in this film ranges from the ridiculous to the sublime, physical comedy exists alongside dry humor, with a nice veteran turn by Bob Newhart. Kevin Kline is predictably in excellent form in this film, alongside Tom Selleck not playing to his expected "square jawed" leading man type. Mr. Selleck plays his humor well and displays a nice sense of comedic timing. The cast makes this film successful.

Not all films with homosexual themes are made to advance some sort of sinister, hidden Hollywood liberal agenda, in point of fact this film was simply made to entertain, and if any part of this films makes the viewer think, then it was a byproduct of the well-acted work by a terrific cast of professionals. Frequently tongue-in-cheek, I found myself laughing at the right moments. A solid "B."

Titanic (1997)

Not even the best of the 54
19 June 2003
This film was richly undeserving of the Best Picture Oscar in 1997. It wasn't the first film about Titanic to win an Oscar, nor the best. There are so many plot holes in this film that even an amateur cinematographer could critique it. The historical continuity was horrid. The only bright spots in the cast were Cate Blanchett and Bernard Fox. Leonardo DiCaprio had yet to grow into a degree of maturity as an actor and delivered a lackluster performance as Dawson.

Better than Titanic (1997)
3 March 2003
This film along with "LA Confidential" were more deserving of the Best Motion Picture Oscar than the winner, Titanic (1997). Excellent performances make this film an excellent watch. It simply goes to show that in Hollywood, tinsel is more important than substance.

More deserving
3 March 2003
This film is a far more deserving candidate to win an Oscar for Best Motion Picture than the James Cameron remake of the Titanic story. It proves how out of touch and shallow AMPAS is that Titanic (1997) won the Oscar over two better candidates. This film was an odd combination of hip and smart. Terrific acting performances at all levels of the film make LA Confidential one of the 5 best films ever made.

Great Cinema
5 March 2001
Probably the single finest film in year with an embarrassment of riches. It is asinine to think "Titanic" beat this finely crafted, excellently scripted and intelligent film. AMPAS clearly missed the point and the took the cheap way out by denying this film "Best Picture."

A tremendously talented cast leaves the audience actually wondering what the ending will be. Marvelous complexity.

Well done film
23 December 2000
This movie is not the average, run of the mill suspense film. It is well acted, with a solid script and very human side to the plot. Jaye Davidson launched a nice career with this surprise. In the end, Crying Game does not take the easy way out and cheat the audience. Neil Jordan made some excellent artistic choices. I am genuinely sorry I missed this film in the theatres and I am pleased I rectified this oversight.

Casablanca (1942)

Personal inspiration
7 October 2000
It has been debated in circles higher than I move in that Casablanca may well be one of the greatest films of all time. I only know that the film provided me with the inspiration to pursue my dream of being a professional actor. As many times as I seen this film, it still moves me.

Casablanca is an example of what the art of film making is all about and IMHO should serve as a reminder of the love of craft that moves, inspires and entertains us with it's exhibition.
