Surprisingly Good!
16 March 2000
I was very surprised when I saw this movie. I thought it would be awful, but it was one of the best teen slashers that has been released since "Scream" brought back the genre. The only other teen horror that I liked after the boom was "The Faculty", but now there's "Final Destination". I thought the acting was good and the whole premise was very intriguing. Although it's not great, I have a soft spot for these kind of movies and it kept me interested the whole time.

Can Roman Polanski make a bad film?
16 March 2000
This movie isn't close to the brilliance of Polanski's earlier horror/thrillers, yet it still delivers. It has solid atmosphere, interesting characters, and an intriguing plot. The first hour keeps you very interested, than it slows down for an hour before the fascinating ending scenes. Though most critics disapproved of the final shot where the screen fades to white, I found it a great way to end the film. We didn't have to see exactly where Johnny Depp's Character was going to and we didn't have to find out the truth behind the mysterious lady. We can imagine where he's going and who the lady is (in my opinion she's sent from Hell). I love when films end like that and make you really think about what happens next.

A truly great movie!
2 October 1999
Even before the movie took it's giant u-turn into the Alaskan wilderness, I found myself totally involved in it. The characters, the town, the dialogue, everything! The movie has a perfect script, you can really notice the brilliance of it when you think back to the movie and realize how every little detail fits together. The acting is brilliant, Mary Elizabeth Matrantonio, Vanessa Martinez and David Strathairn are perfect together as the desperate lost souls.

The movie does get much more interesting when a drug deal goes wrong and the three survivors are forced to swim to the nearest shore which is a desolate island. Now the three of them have to pull together to survive the wilderness with no comfort except a diary of a young girl who used to live in a small little cabin, which they are using as shelter.

This movie is truly remarkable with an ending that will confuse, anger, and surprise, but in my opinion is the only way to end a movie like this.

A beautiful film!
2 October 1999
"Happy-Go-Lucky" is one of my favourite films from the 1998 Toronto Film Festival. I still can't believe it hasn't been released in North America yet.

The film is centered around a young boy and his dysfunctional family. From his slutty sister, to his father who is never around, to his mother who has to bare with it all. The boy is also a kind of misfit in school. He is one of five students in the class who can't do a simple exercise in gym class and are forced to practise for days to get it right. The film is filled with beautiful imagery and ponders the questions of life many young children ask themselves. Like why do people who get constantly bullied, bully others when they get the chance?

The movie is also a love story between the boy and a girl who has to go through the grueling practices after school with him. There are moments in this film that are simply unforgettable and really make you think afterwards. I really can't tell you in words how remarkable this movie is.

"Happy-Go-Lucky" is an amazing achievement and a touching story that will stay with me forever. So, if you ever hear this movie is playing near you, go out of your way to watch it.

Hilarious movie about gay and lesbian rehabilitation.
19 September 1999
Natasha Lyonne plays Megan, a sweet, all-American, Christian cheerleader in this hysterical satire about teenagers who are forced to go to a gay rehabilitation camp, 'True Directions', to stop their homosexual urges. What forces Megan to attend this camp? Well, she's a vegetarian, she hates kissing her boyfriend, and she has a poster of Melissa Etheridge in her room. Oh No! A gay intervention headed by RuPaul as his original male self is just the beginning of a programme to de-homosexualize Megan.

At the headquarters of 'True Directions', Megan accompanies other homosexuals in search of heterosexuality. But, Megan meets Graham (Clea DuVall) and there starts a homosexual relationship that probably wouldn't have happened if Megan had stayed at home.

This movie is hilarious, witty, crude, and provides tons of social commentary towards the stupidity of homophobia. The scary thing is, places like 'True Directions' really exist!

I can't believe how bad this movie was.
19 September 1999
One of the worst films I've ever seen. Great cast, including, Gary Sinise, Anna Paquin, Giovanni Ribisi, Joan Allen, Jeff Daniels, is totally wasted. However, a great role was also wasted, David Schwimmer could have done so much with his role as a gun crazed homosexual, but instead he was boring and useless. Why does this guy act out of "Friends", or at all?

I don't want to talk about this movie to much, it's just wasting my time. This film totally sucked and DO NOT SEE IT!

Odd, very, very odd.
19 September 1999
A modern version of Hansel and Gretel, "Freeway 2" is the story about a locked-up homicidal lesbian, Cyclona, who escapes with a fellow bulimic inmate, Crystal (named after her mom's favourite drug) to seek help from her childhood savior, Sister Gomez (played by Vincent Gallo). As they journey from the States to Tijuana they kill, steal, perform strange sexual acts, and, of course, have sex.

I don't know what to think of this movie, it was very abnormal, but what was I expecting going to a Midnight Madness show at The Toronto Film Fest. I like Natasha Lyonne's performance a lot (much different than her role in another film fest movie "But, I'm a Cheerleader"), and it's almost on par with Reese Witherspoon's performance in the original "Freeway". The film, though, was not nearly as good as the original, but it had it's moments, and the gross out humour was hysterical.

All in all, this is an average sequel which doesn't match the original, but is a must see for original "Freeway" fans and Natasha Lyonne fans.

Very funny and heart warming movie that doesn't go overboard sentimentally.
19 September 1999
I saw "Anywhere But Here" at The Toronto International Film Festival and I went in expecting a good movie and that's what I got.

Susan Sarandon and Natalie Portman are amazing in this movie and they have a very noticeable connection. The movie is filled with humour, sadness, and much more.

"Anywhere But Here" starts out with Susan Sarandon and Natalie Portman on a road trip from Wisconsin to Beverly Hills. It then follows the lives of the two women trying to fit in to the elegant life style of Beverly Hills through three years.

This film is one of Wayne Wang's best and the performances by the two actresses are incredible. I recommend this film greatly.

Nicole Kidman simply delivers the best performance of the decade.
17 September 1999
I am a big fan of Gus Van Sant(even though he remade "Psycho") and this movie is by far his best film (even better than "Drugstore Cowboy").

Though the plot is interesting and the supporting actors are amazing, the real heart of this film goes to Nicole Kidman. No one in Hollywood today would be able to do what she did in this movie, absolutely no one, not even Jennifer Jason Leigh or Holly Hunter. Her performance is spectacular. She's witty, shallow, dumb as a post, and downright mean. She delivers the best performance of her career and in my opinion, the decade.

Carrie (1976)
Simply a masterpiece!
17 September 1999
One of the best movies I have ever seen! From the breathtaking pan across the girl's locker room to the infamous prom scene, this movie does not make one mistake. Skillfully crafted together by Brian DePalma, this movie catches you from the very beginning and never lets go, not even after the film has ended.

Everything works amazingly well together in this movie, the script, the directing, and the acting. Every single actor portrayed astonishly realistic characters, from Sissy Spacek to P.J. Soles, and Piper Laurie to Nancy Allen. Only a few times in cinematic history do so many amazing actors give their best to create the life-like feel of this movie. Though Faye Dunaway and Beatrice Straight were good in "Network", their performances did not deserve the Oscars as much as Sissy Spacek as the tortured teen, and Piper Laurie as the psychotic religious fanatic.

As you can see from above, this movie is astonishing, and requires MULTIPLE VIEWINGS, I'm talking at LEAST 10 times, so go and buy this movie right now and you will not be disappointed.
