I am a big fan of Gus Van Sant(even though he remade "Psycho") and this movie is by far his best film (even better than "Drugstore Cowboy").
Though the plot is interesting and the supporting actors are amazing, the real heart of this film goes to Nicole Kidman. No one in Hollywood today would be able to do what she did in this movie, absolutely no one, not even Jennifer Jason Leigh or Holly Hunter. Her performance is spectacular. She's witty, shallow, dumb as a post, and downright mean. She delivers the best performance of her career and in my opinion, the decade.
