Pane e tulipani (2000)
Great dialogues/actors
The lines of Bruno Ganz especially are worth watching the film; The anarchist-flowerist is hilarious and reminds me of only 2 or 3 "real persons" in my life; this film is about NOT missing opportunities in one's life and about awareness ; there's a lot of humour and it's definitely Northern Italy, this could be from any of European Alps countries... If your wife is a house-wife...be prepared ... PS : what I really liked also is that for once Venice is not shown as on post-cards but almost as a village, which gives it even more charm...
Jan Dara (2001)
Depressing story of incest/rapes
Rapes , incests , and of course curses, a boring and mentally unhealthy story about a series of love affairs under the same two roofs , it's in Thailand but you won't see much of the country and culture here... of course there are sex scenes but these are of course also boring
Pi (1998)
VERY Pretentious
Sorry I'm not a native speaker so forgive some language errors; anyway what I wish to say is : there are no real characters, no dialogue - just a rather interesting use of black and white film and lighting and a very exausting score (nice drums though). I was probably expecting too much and was "drowned by numbers". If the message of this film is "don't look for some hidden truth, truth is simply nature and simplicity", then there are much much better stories/films and this film is just an illustration of "why make simple when you can make complicated" with just way too much show-off accessories. If that's US Indie tendancy, I regret Cassavetes among a few others
Snow Falling on Cedars (1999)
Irritating Style Exercise
It's a pity, this film could have good, but what a terrible soundtrack, simply noisy : superimposed dialogues, music etc; too many flashbacks; and as for the editing it seemed that they wanted to keep ALL the beautiful shots whether relevant or not to the story, and the result is an IRRITATING STYLE EXERCISE
