Traffic (2000)
Great flik that informs... more is needed!
Traffic provides a great understanding of the drug war for those that don't read. It is entertaining and absorbing movie that lets the viewer decided for him/herself about what is wrong with the war and what should be done. However, there is a part missing from this movie that needs to be covered and brought to public attention, somehow. It the CIA's involvement in helping drug lords and permitting the use of that kind of money in thier operations. Like in the 60s, when the CIA hooked up with organized crime to whack the beard... times and faces have changed, but things remain the same. From Vietnam with Air America and opium, they became involved with drugs. The CIA even admitted to helping drug dealers in the 80s because thier money was being used to help the contras... but it is DARKER then that. With a little reading, you can find out more about our shadow government. I suggest you all read Dark Alliance by Gary Webb... among other great books. Because they won't make it a movie, anytime soon. Unless Oliver Stone feels the urge.
Cast Away (2000)
A shameless FedEx Commercial with a great advertisement for Wilson sporting goods thrown in!
I am outraged at watching this horrible sell-out movie that serves the purpose of making money and promoting FedEx as a saintly company. It starts out watching the efficent delivery of a package. Then Tom Hanks giving speeches about packages not even being a minute late and FedEx can not be like the postal service. Hell, the movie makes it painfully obvious he cares more about FedEx then his girl. Then the FedEx plane crashes. He is stranded and FedEx packages float to shore and save him. On the way he makes friends with a wilson volleyball and the sell-out director even goes low enough to name the ball "wilson", so you can be reminded what brand the freaking ball is! Then he gets back on a FedEx plane. FedEx people give speeches about him. Then after breaking up his girl, he goes to deliver a FedEx package. This delivery of the package that "saved" his life, leads him to another romantic interest just in the nick of time. What am I saying? FedEx is god. This movie warped my fragile little mind. I can't wait until all movies, songs and book are about companies!
Fight Club (1999)
A movie about insanity, an inner personal conflicts at heart
Yes, you heard me right. The violence vs. consumer culture is only a sub-theme in this movie. If you dig a little deeper, you will find that this movie is really about insanity. It is one the first movies to take us inside the mind of a madman. And it shows up an internal battle between the free "do what I feel like when I feel like it" macho guy and the scared moral materialistic vulnerable guy. The free and the restrained. Both are towards the extremes. This race toward the edge destroys the world or the world as the main character sees it. It destroys his reality. I think this movie is really about what is called "the middle path" by Buddists. It's a very creative and visually mind blowing way of portraying it.
JFK (1991)
The Greatest Movie of ALL TIME!
Some movies make everything you ate for lunch rise up, exit through your mouth and splash onto the floor. This movie is not one of those movies. It is historically accurate and if you don't believe me... READ! "JFK the book on the film" includes all the information that was used to write the screenplay. Almost every line in the movie is backed up by three of four sources. The movie is also entertaining and moving! It is the greatest. Oliver Stone is the greatest director of all time!
Conspiracy: The Trial of the Chicago 8 (1987)
Truly great! I can't believe this was a TV movie!
Some TV movies make you wish for suicide and others entertain you. Still others do not belong, they seem to be real movies. This is one of them... I think this is a greatest TV movie of all time and a damn good movie.
Platoon (1986)
A brilliant masterpiece and the movie that tops my list for the best war movies.
1.Platoon Oliver Stone was there and he told it as he saw it. Platoon shows us a man's struggle to survive in war. It was not about winning or losing, it was about surviving. The battle again the enemy was inside every Vietnam Vet. How would your morality hold up in a war? This movie captures war in a brilliant and masterfull way. 2. Born of the fourth of July This movie tells the story of why someone would go to war and what happens when they get back. It is the best anti-war film ever made. 3. Saving Private Ryan This movie capture the visual aspect of war perfectly, an old World War two vet told me. It is a truly great movie. 4.Das Boot Many forget this film when talking about war movies. That is because it almost does not seem like a war, it seems more like a prison, underwater. This movie captures the pointlessness of war. 5.Glory Different from the films above this film is pro war. This film argues that the horrors of war do have a purpose and point. And that with a victory something good can come out of it. 6.DrStrangelove "What, this is not a war movie?", that is probably what you are thinking. It is a war movie about a nuclear war. It laughs at the end of the world and brings the point across well. 7.Apocalpse Now! No movie captures the insanity of war like this movie does. A complete trip into the insanity of Vietnam. 8.Shindler's List A movie about the victims of a war and a hero. It shows the other side and it a touching and brilliant movie. You may call me crazy but I think the ending is happy. 9.The Killing Fields A movie about the observers, the outsiders, and the watchers of a war who get pulled into the horrors. A story that was ment to be told. 10.BraveHeart The war for Freedom... A true hero who believed strongly in something that we all hold sacred. A great movie that focuses on the military leader.
Great War movies that did not make the list Patton Heaven and Earth
The Matrix (1999)
Touches the brink of intelligences, then fades into a damn good piece of Hollywood fluff
This movie has the potential of being a top of the line intelligent science fiction movie questioning the nature of reality. (12 monkeys, Gattica, 2001 a space odessy, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, The Abyss) but alas it falls into the spell of Hollywood and becomes a damn good piece of entertainment fluff almost being intelligent. ( Terminator 1 & 2, Alien, Aliens, Star Wars Series) But oh well.... hollywood is not perfect and it was still and entertaining movie. If you like being entertained then see this movie because it is so dazzling but for people who want to be moved and perplexed this is not the movie... sorry...
The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996)
LARRY IS A HERO!
The movie is GREAT. GOOD cast GREAT crew and the story is entertaining and moving. Some parts will make you laugh other cry and others will make you mad. It is a great move all in all. Four Stars! and was robbed at the Oscars by AN ENGLISH BORE. Larry Flynt is a hero! If you liked the movie read his book and you will find out how great Larry Flynt is. He is a ruch guy who stood against the corrupt government.
The Abyss (1989)
THE GREATEST MOVIE (If you watch the director's cut)
The first time I saw the Abyss I saw the director's cut. It was a great emotional sci-fi drama about love life survival and the humanity of the time that the movie was made. The aliens in this movie are unlike any other. The drama is so emotional it literally puts you to tears. Watch the director's cut. The original version does the movie no justice.
Movie rating. 10 out of 10 **********
