Ruthless People (1986)
Comedy with a great story line!
Intricate plot (very unusual for comedy) is brilliant and hilarious. Enough twists and turns to satisfy a discerning mystery fan, assuming that the fan can stop laughing long enough to follow the plot. Danny DeVito is great here! The movie is perfectly cast in every character. I love the Judge Reinhold/Helen Slater combo as the kidnappers! Bette Middler shines as well.
Warning Sign (1985)
Realistic enough to be truly frightening
Unlike many horror movies where you need to check your credulity at the door, what you see in this film is actually believable. The idea of military scientists finding a catalyst which induces rage in the human mind, then mating it with a virus as a delivery device, is a very scary idea! Imagine you could catch homicidal mania as easily as you could catch the flu.
The acting in this movie is good if somewhat uneven. Joanie (played wonderfully by Kathleen Quinlan) is a very intense character. Sam Waterston is good as her lover and the local sheriff.
The film is not slick, but has some intense moments that many "slicker" films can only dream of achieving. Overall a very suspenseful film.
Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985)
Great post apocalypse film
This is one of my two favorite films of the genre "post apocalypse", the other being "The Stand" (S. King). I can hardly believe how good Tina Turner is here! And the part of Savannah could not have been better cast.
Great story line. Most will remember the battle in Thunderdome. I love the post-exile part of this film where Max is saved by Savannah (Helen Buday, who seems to have dropped off the Earth after this film). Savannah's telling of the tale is the highlight of the film!
The Sound of Music (1965)
Deserving of "Classic" status
This would make my short list of one of the best movies of all time. The fine acting by a wonderfully endearing cast, the beautiful music, the magnificent scenery, and a truly wonderful story makes this one of those movies you want to gather your family around once a year for a special viewing.
Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century (1999)
Great script. May be what kids may sound like in next generation?
Have you ever seen a futuristic sci-fi movie that adjusted the language of its characters to reflect what words/phrases people might be using in the next generation or two? This imaginative Disney movie does just that. Kirsten Storms is wonderful as the main character, Zenon. And kudos to those resposible for the cool wardrobe.
Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999)
John Waters like
I misjudged this film at first, being taken offguard by it's offbeat and strange humour. Subsequent viewings revealed a very John Waters like sick humour, uneven, sometimes offensive, sometimes brilliant. I love the scene of Kirsten Dunst tapdancing among the cadavers at the morgue.
This film also features another young beauty, Denise Richards. She reminds me of the character Amber von Tussle in "Hairspray" who was also coached by her parents (Debbie Harry and Sonny Bono).
Event Horizon (1997)
Very dark, very chilling. Among the best horror films.
Just when I thought horror films were becoming boring and predictable ala Halloween and Elm Street Nightmares, my faith in the genre has been restored. Turn the lights down, grab a glass of wine (you may need a stiff drink), and get ready to be blown away.
