Melina Matsoukas has already produced a body of impressive work before she even made the jump to scripted fiction, via her Grammy-winning music video work for massive stars like Rihanna and Beyoncé. And 2019’s “Queen & Slim,” as well as her work on TV shows like “Insecure” and “Master of None,” affirmed her talents as a visual stylist. This year, on the pilot of Apple TV+ series “The Changeling,” Matsoukas applied her gifts to a completely new aim: making a fairy tale.
For her work on the series, Matsoukas received the Auteur Award from IndieWire Honors, alongside “The Changeling” creator Kelly Marcel. On December 6, the 2023 IndieWire Honors ceremony will celebrate 11 filmmakers, creators, and actors for their achievements in creative independence. We’re showcasing their work with new interviews leading up to the Los Angeles event.
Kelly Marcel, who believes in signs from the universe and sees magic everywhere, was at home with her six-month-old baby when “The Changeling” appeared at the door.
“The book landed, I read it, and I was horrified,” the showrunner said, laughing as she recalled her overly intense introduction to Victor Lavalle’s dark fantasy novel from 2017.
“I was at home with a new baby, and I was experiencing all of that crazy stuff that you go through as a new mom, whilst reading this horrifying book about parenting! Ultimately, it’s very hopeful and incredibly beautiful, but it was also scary and felt very real to me as well.”

Actress Jodie Turner Smith is still proudly wearing her wedding ring despite her split from actor Joshua Jackson. She shared photos of herself on social media donning a new look though appeared completely unbothered with the divorce.
The ‘Queen & Slim’ actress took to Instagram to show off the outfit she wore on September 23, which was 10 days after she and the ‘Dawson’s Creek’ alum officially separated for the Gucci show during Paris Fashion Week, as per Page Six.
However, in the photos shared by the 37-year-old, she made no mention of the pair’s split in the caption and instead focused on Gucci’s “chic” and “sexy” new collection.
In the photos taken, the British actress was sporting her wedding ring on that finger while rocking a striking gray bandeau-style top with a dagger-shaped cutout highlighting her cleavage.

Summer’s almost over, which means the start of the traditional TV season. And while the ongoing Hollywood double strike delayed production for scripted originals across the industry, there’s still an avalanche of new and returning shows coming to broadcast, cable and streaming services this fall.
While we’ll have to wait longer for the return of broadcast staples like the “One Chicago” franchise, “Young Sheldon” and “Grey’s Anatomy,” networks are planning to lean on banked originals (like NBC’s “Found” and “The Irrational”), unscripted staples like NBC’s “The Voice” (with new judge Reba McEntire) and “Dancing With the Stars” returning to ABC, international acquisitions (“Sullivan’s Crossing” on The CW) and even borrowing buzzworthy shows from sibling cable networks (“Yellowstone” airing on CBS). People disappear, witches are real and there are portals that have never been traveled through before in Apple TV+’s “The Changeling,” a new drama series starring Lakeith Stanfield based on the book by Victor Lavalle.
What starts off as a “boy meets girl” story ends up playing out as a terrifying nightmare. A little over 30 seconds into the trailer, Clarke Backo’s character Emma meets what appears to be a witch next a body of water in Brazil.
“She told me I had three wishes,” Emma said “When it falls off my wrist, those three wishes will come true. Do not cut it.”
But for Apollo Kagway, Lakeith Stanfield’s character, wishes and witches are only found in fairytales.
“Emma, with me…all three of your wishes will come true,” Apollo said before snapping off the red string from Emma’s wrist.
“Would you even know if you crossed into a fairytale?...

The promotion of Donna Langley, the head of the Universal film studio, to chief content officer overseeing all of NBCUniversal’s entertainment divisions, is Comcast President Mike Cavanagh’s first big decision in his tenure running the media business directly. It’s a savvy move to advance a quietly accomplished leader while other major studios are struggling, many insiders told TheWrap.
“In a time when these studios are a mess, it’s a safe move,” a producer told TheWrap about promoting Langley, referring to the box office woes and internal challenges at rivals like Bob Iger’s Walt Disney Company and David Zaslav’s Warner Bros. Discovery.
“It seemed inevitable,” one top talent agent told TheWrap. “There were rumors for a while that she wanted more responsibility and to move further up the Comcast hierarchy.”

“Tron: Ares,” the third “Tron” movie that will star Jared Leto, has added some serious indie cred.
Greta Lee, the breakout of A24’s critical darling “Past Lives,” and “Queen & Slim” and “After Yang” actress Jodie Turner-Smith, have both joined the cast of the sci-fi film at Disney, an individual with knowledge of the project told IndieWire.
Lee and Turner-Smith join a cast that includes Leto and Evan Peters. The film will be directed by Joachim Rønning.
Lee will play the female lead in the project, a brilliant video game programmer and co-ceo of one of the world’s most successful technology companies. Turner-Smith has a significant role in the project, but her part is being kept under wraps.
Plot details haven’t been unveiled, either, but THR is reporting that the film follows Leto as Ares, the manifestation of an all-powerful, sentient computer program, who makes his way into the real world.

As the WGA overwhelmingly voted to approve its pattern of demands in advance of a possible writers’ strike, Warner Bros. is committed to not putting films into production until they are truly ready — even if the industry careens to a halt.

On March 3, Michael De Luca, co-chair and CEO along with Pamela Abdy of Warner Bros. Just one year after Maggie Gyllenhaal (“The Lost Daughter”) became the second woman to win the Directors Guild of America’s First-Time Film Director award, Charlotte Wells (“Aftersun”) is set to follow her as the category’s third female champ. The 35-year-old Scottish filmmaker, who helmed three narrative shorts between 2015 and 2017, has already been heavily feted for her feature directing (and writing) debut with accolades such as the Cannes French Touch Prize and the Gotham Award for Best Breakthrough Director. Now, the fact that a whopping 96 of Gold Derby’s 2023 DGA Awards predictions odds-makers have her as their top choice in the rookie race should translate to a decisive win.
This category’s current lineup is the only one in its eight-year history to include just one male nominee. Last year’s unprecedented field of six consisted of two men and four women, including Gyllenhaal. Our odds show Wells far outpacing female contenders Alice Diop,...

In the 1985 action film "Commando," Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as John Matrix, a retired U.S. Army Colonel who has just 11 hours to rescue his daughter, Jenny (Alyssa Milano), from a group of mercenaries. Along the way, Matrix carjacks and forces help from Cindy (Rae Dawn Chong), a flight attendant and pilot-in-training. Finding the right actress to play the character was a challenge for the casting team.
The role of Cindy was originally written for a white actress. The film's director, Mark L. However, it was Rae Dawn Chong, a Black Canadian woman who stood out. "She was the most comedic, and did the best reading," he said. "We were way ahead of our time in that way." What really is the cost of fame?
The 1980s music industry is explored in Netflix’s “Beauty,” written and produced by Lena Waithe and directed by Sundance Film Festival darling Andrew Dosunmu, who also executive produces the feature. “Beauty” premiered at the 2022 Tribeca Festival and premieres on Netflix June 29.
Gracie Marie Bradley stars as the titular Beauty, a rising singer who struggles to maintain her identity after being offered a lucrative recording deal by an executive, played by Sharon Stone. Niecy Nash and Giancarlo Esposito star as Beauty’s parents, who worry if she’s “ready” for all the spotlight has to bring.
“You know what they do to stars? They build you up just so they can take you down,” Nash says in the trailer, before warning Bradley, “You won’t be real. You’ll be a fantasy.”

Now that Joshua Jackson and Jodie Turner-Smith are married and parents, we're excited to catch even more glimpses of their low-key romance. The couple first met at Usher's 40th birthday party in October 2018, and they were spotted holding hands and grabbing lunch the following month.
In early August 2019, the 43-year-old "Dawson's Creek" actor - who previously dated Diane Kruger for 10 years before splitting in July 2016 - and the "Queen & Slim" star also raised eyebrows while picking up paperwork from a Beverly Hills courthouse, leading some to believe they retrieved a marriage license. Us Weekly later confirmed that they secretly wed. In honor of their romance and recent appearance at the Critics' Choice Awards, let's just take a moment to appreciate how cute they look while hanging out!

Hillman Grad, the multi-platform entertainment company founded by actor, producer and Emmy-winning writer Lena Waithe, has promoted veteran executive Rishi Rajani to CEO.
In his new role, Rajani will oversee all divisions across Hillman Grad, guide the company’s overall strategic and creative direction, and develop new business partnerships. Waithe will retain her position as founder and chair.

Joshua Jackson and Jodie Turner-Smith have great red carpet chemistry. The actors, who have been married for two years, looked blissfully in love attending the 2022 Critics' Choice Awards together on March 13 in Los Angeles. At one point, Jackson just stood back and watched in awe as Turner-Smith posed separately in her aqua Gucci gown. The couple were in attendance for Jackson, whose performance in "Dr. Death" earned him a nomination for best actor in a limited series or movie made for television.
It was a rare award show appearance for Jackson and Turner-Smith. The two were first linked after they attended Usher's birthday party in 2018. Jackson and Turner-Smith made their red carpet debut at the "Queen & Slim" premiere the following year, and by December 2019, news had broken that they were married and expecting their first child. They attended the 2020 BAFTAs when they were expecting and welcomed their child shortly after in April.

Gyllenhaal is also nominated for the Directors Guild of America’s First-Time Film Director award. According to our DGA Awards odds, she is widely expected to prevail and thereby become only the second woman to receive the honor.
