Manoj Bajpayee, known as one of India’s finest actors, is adopting a mass-market action hero persona in upcoming film “Bhaiyya Ji.”
The story, where Bajpayee’s character faces off against a powerful man and his henchmen to seek revenge for wrongs done to his family, is literally ripped from the headlines. The actor read the real-life story in a newspaper several years ago and it stayed with him.
“I wanted to do an independent film and really explore this mindset of revenge, where it comes from, really analyze it and find the psychology of revenge in the human mind, that fascinated me,” Bajpayee told Variety. While shooting courtroom drama “Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai” (2023), the actor mentioned it to director Apoorv Singh Karki, who was similarly fascinated by the idea.
“I just wanted his opinion on it. But this guy jumped up and said, ‘I’m a big fan of mass entertainers,...

In the Apoorv Singh Karki directed film, Manoj plays a prosecuting lawyer who is pitted against a slew of celebrity lawyers, reports ‘Variety’.
“Usually what happens is that you spend some time with the real person. Somewhere, I realised it’s a two-hour film, you have to have your own preparation away from the real guy, who is somebody who’s not even known to the world. Rotterdam Competition Title ‘Joram’ Addresses Enforced Development Malaise in Survival Thriller Form
Throughout his career, Indian filmmaker Devashish Makhija has been a chronicler of social inequities and “Joram” continues the trajectory.
Makhija’s short films examine subjects as varied as misogyny, corruption, land grab and patriarchy. Amongst his features, “Ajji” (2017) tackles rape and its aftermath, while “Bhonsle” (2018) looks at a host of subjects including loneliness, social justice and the plight of the migrant worker.
With “Joram,” Makhija returns to themes explored in his debut feature “Oonga” (2013). Eminent actor Manoj Bajpayee, who previously starred in Makhija’s 2016 short “Taandav” and played the title role in “Bhonsle,” plays Dasru, a tribal migrant worker in Mumbai whose past catches up with him and he must flee with his infant daughter Joram. Mohd. Zeeshan Ayyub plays Ratnakar, the weary Mumbai cop in pursuit of Dasru. Also in the mix is sinister tribal lawmaker Phulo Karma, played by Smita Tambe (Netflix series “Sacred Games”).

Following the excellent “Ajji” and “Bhonsle”, Devashish is now moving into a different direction, adapting a published short story of his own, into the short film “Cycle”, a multilingual production shot on a phone camera as found footage, filmed in three uninterrupted long takes in the jungles of Madhya Pradesh, with a large and ethnically varied cast, most of whom were facing a camera for the first time.
“Cycle” review is part of the Submit Your Film Initiative
The film begins in truly horrendous fashion, with a number of soldiers having entered a tribal village, in search of a woman named Kariya, and one of them shooting what is happening with his phone. The search, however, is anything but peaceful, as the man in charge orders one of his soldiers to strip and rape a young girl named Bela, while a number of others are ordered to hit a man laying on the ground.

After a series of hit shows that streamed on their platform, Sony Liv is now gearing up for their next big one, Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story. Expected to arrive in early October, the web series is special since it is based on the true story of stock broker Harshad Mehta, who had made headlines back in 1992 when the big stock market scam ranging in thousands of crores was unveiled.
There was good intrigue created around mid-August itself when the teaser of the web series was revealed. With director Hansal Mehta at the helm of affairs, one was rest assured that there would be quite some content coupled with style that would be the hallmark of Scam 1992. Moreover, to bring in good realism in this fact meets fiction tale, Gujarati actor Pratik Gandhi is the chosen one to enact the part of Harshad Mehta.

The way Marathi sentiment is used by lumpen taxi driver, Vilas (played by Santosh Juvekar) in order to get hold of the chawl. Even vilas isn't given much importance at the Marathi Morcha office. Bhonsle (SonyLiv)
Starring: Manoj Bajpayee, Ishita Chakraborty Singh, Virat Viabhav, Abhishek Bannerjee, Santosh Juvekar
Directed by Devashish Makhija
Strightaway, this is a persuasive and powerful film that shouldn’t be missed by anyone who has watched any film set in the cultural-political dynamics that govern life in the Mumbai chawls. As relevant as Saeed Mirza’s Salim Langde Pe Mat Ro and N Chandra’s Ankush (the two films that are most decidedly the reference points) Bhonsle has a gut-wrenching immediacy to it.
A palpable sense of infinite injustice seeps into a world and a culture rapidly being taken over by goons. Most unexpectedly the retired cop Ganpath Bhosle takes on the role of an unlikely hero, as he protects a young Bihari girl and her kid-brother from the wrath and disdain of a political henchman who want to use the ‘Marathi Manoos’ card to send all migrant labourers back to Bihar.

The APSAs, now in their 13th edition, like to celebrate the diversity and artistic expression of the 70 countries in its remit, and they usually spread around the awards to avoid clustering around a single winner. So it proved again this year.
While “Parasite” predictably took the top award, Russia’s “Beanpole” was the numerical winner and the only film to claim two of the APSAs stunning glass vessel prizes. Directed by Kantemir Balagov, “Beanpole” was rewarded for best screenplay and achievement in cinematography (Ksenia Sereda).

Bhonsle is the name of the silent hero, an Indian cop played by Manoj Bajpayee, who is forcibly retired in the first scene of the film and who petitions, with pitiful dignity, for an extension of duty over the next two hours. If this sounds like a weepy, over-long social drama, director Devashish Makhija’s (Oonga, Ajji) delicately directed third feature transcends much (if not all) of its maudlin side in the closely observed portrait of a man who has lost his purpose in life, which should win kudos for star Bajpayee. The film’s anguished mood teetering on the ...

His films include Absent (2016), Taandav (2016) and Ajji (2017).
On the occasion of his latest film, Bhonsle, having its world premiere at Busan International Film Festival, we speak with him about the film and the festival, Manoj Bajpayee, his future projects and many other topics.
Once more, a film of yours premiered in Busan. How do you feel about that and how do you think Biff has shaped your career?
I always saw my films as ‘Indian’ before Busan Biff happened to me last year with ‘Ajji’. ‘Ajji’ was celebrated as an ‘Asian’ film more than an Indian one, and this opened me up to the contemporary cinema,...

Devasish Makhija’s feature debut, “Ajji” was one of the most impressive productions to come out of India in 2017. As we have so often witnessed in cinema, following up on a great first film is quite a hard task, and Makhija found himself in that exact position, one year after his last film premiered in Busan. “Bhonsle” roughly follows the same paths “Ajji” did, including the Busan premiere, but instead results in a much more “Indian” movie than its predecessor. Let us take things from the beginning, though.
Bhonsle is having its world premiere at Busan International Film Festival
Bhonsle is a Marathi constable on the brink of a forced retirement, who tries to renew his contract with the police but finds himself repeatedly told to be patient. Furthermore, he lives a secluded, dead-end, lonely life, having no social interactions whatsoever, despite the respect his position commands among citizens. Eventually,...

It has been a busy 2018 for award-winning Indian actor Manoj Bajpayee. He featured in smash Bollywood hits “Baaghi 2” and “Satyameva Jayate,” and in acclaimed independent films “In the Shadows,” “Missing” and “Love Sonia.” Bajpayee stars in and is a co-producer on “Bhonsle,” which had its world premiere at Busan Oct. 5 and is a nominee for the Kim Ji-seok Award.
In “Bhonsle,” directed by Devashish Makhija (whose “Ajji” played Busan in 2017), Bajpayee plays a reclusive Mumbai policeman who stands up against divisive factions. It is the actor’s third film in recent years at the festival after “Aligarh” in 2015 and “In the Shadows” in 2017. For Bajpayee, wearing the twin hats of an actor and a producer has been a balancing act. In the case of “Bhonsle,” he had to step in as a producer when existing producers backed out.

South Korean filmmaker Jero Yun’s “Beautiful Days” has been announced as the opening title of the Busan International Film Festival, Korea’s biggest film festival.
Starring Lee Na-young, “Beautiful Days” depicts the story of a woman who abandons her husband and child to escape North Korea for a better life abroad. Martial arts drama, “Master Z: The Ip Man Legacy,” by Hong Kong’s Yuen Woo-ping will close the festival.
“‘Beautiful Days’ sees the dissolution and restoration of a family, and also that its subject is very timely,” said festival director Jay Jeon.
For its twenty third edition, the Busan film festival has selected 323 films from 79 countries. That includes 115 world premieres and 25 international premieres.
The festival’s Gala Presentation section screens only three films this year. They are world premieres of Stanley Kwan’s “First Night Nerves” and Zhang Lu’s “Ode to the Goose,” and Tsukamoto Shinya’s “Killing.
