Very sad but uplifting

Sun Li is my favourite actress so I am always going to oversell whatever she appears in. A Chinese family take into their house a Japanese girl who initially is hated by some members of the family but over the years becomes an important and integral part of it. Her life and that of her adopted family is hard and tragic and there is very little let up of the tearful scenes that constantly occur. But through all the hardships the inherent goodness of Auntie Duohe never waivers and she endures whatever befalls her. Sometimes the action seems contrived but it is well acted by all the main players. I would recommend it but have tissues at the ready.

What a mesmerising life adventure!

Warning: Spoilers
I have always known there were Japanese left behind during WWII....I thought nearly all were killed....by Chinese, with some justification....That said, this is a tale of survival and even success - by a young Japanese lady who got lucky enough to have a kind Chinese family rescue her. It is simply brilliant....11/10 for me....From the music, the actors, the believable story-line....It enhances the characters, and the general feel of two cultures.....both noble. And it tells the story in the background of Chinese revolution and Chinese people living in that historical period......Simply amazing....One of the best series I have seen anywhere in the world. I am disappointed with the final episode, one of many.....In Japan they cure the disappointment with an SP.....A Special Program....to flesh out the aftermath.....The producers of this show should consider the same.....A truly epic story and series....let down by the last episode. And SP can enable the producers to restore their dignity and complete this magnificent series with honour....It is the Japanese and Chinese way.....

Great series for binging

You need to get through the first few shows then it you get use to the acting style. Set in China during WW2, it depicts the story of young Japanese girl who is taken in by a Chinese family, which was dangerous because of the hostility towards the Japanese at the time. The story captivated me because I got to see something new, a different culture, and how people in these different cultures interact. I binged watched it over a period of a week, I felt like I was part of their family. Give it try.
