Typical TV Movie
morbidlove2119 August 2018
About 15 minutes into this movie I began to wonder if I'd make it through the entire thing. It felt very amateurish and the acting and dialogue left much to be desired. But interestingly enough, it had a strange charm to it that kept me interested through the entire movie. I think it was so over the top and clunky that I liked it. It was average for a TV movie, even though it was a bit predictable.

Patty McCormack is brilliant even if the movie isn't
phoenixinvictus8 October 2019
It's interesting how a mediocre script can be saved by the acting of a single star. Patty McCormack is brilliant in her golden years and is as scary as she was in her youth. The movie is only worth watching because Patty is in it and it will terrify you because she is in it. If any other actress had taken the role you would be rolling your eyes and turning the channel. I am now terrified of grannies and have a whole new respect for them. I might even give them my seat on the bus if I ever deem to humble myself by taking public transportation alongside common people (which will never happen-just saying). This story could have been a bit more polished and gained a higher rating. The actors were good, especially the kid, but the overall plot needed some more work.

Neighborhood Watch Fail
thewakenarrative13 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
House of Deadly Secrets (Beware there may be spoilers and a crazy old lady) This B-rated made for tv horror film is a little over the top (at least that's how we see this production). Maggie and her daughter, Ava, move into a new house on a quiet street at the beginning of this film. Maggie flips houses for a living and is freshly on her own after a breakup with her ex, Zeke. Patty McCormack steals the show as the their neighbor from across the street, sweet old "Sylvia". She quickly befriends Maggie and her true character begins to unfold. Sylvia's "husband" is being held hostage in his own home, only left with a wooden spoon to defend himself (and call for help). Unfortunately, that wooden spoon is also his downfall as Sylvia creatively shoves it down his throat to shut him up.

Sylvia is haunted by the "disappearance" of her own daughter at a young age and is willing to do anything to keep her memory alive. She begins to see her "Cindy" in little Ava and makes any excuse to let herself into Maggie's home. She really is crafty in this sense. As you guessed it, eventually Maggie and her reunited family defeat the crazy old neighbor together and survive to live another day.

Strongest: "Sylvia" - with her ability and brute force with wooden spoons, pushing, and stabbing - there's lots of muscle packed into this petite frail body.

Most gullible: Maggie - making friends so quickly with "Sylvia" - she's old she must be trustworthy.

Most creative evil plan - "Sylvia" again when she pays off the bum to sleep in Maggie's home. Tricky tricky!

Overall grade: C+

Hallmark Channel garbage on Netflix
draftdubya9 August 2018
Netflix is on a roll with picking garbage to add to its content. A old lady with the strength of a line backer and the skills of a ninja. I thought Amazon and Vudu were the only ones in the race to the bottom, then Netflix says "here hold my beer"

Could there be any more stereotypes?
trixietrx11 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I don't leave many reviews but I will watch any horror/thriller whatever as they tend to be underrated. This one is SERIOUSLY OVER-rated. I should have checked reviews first, but got lazy.

Possible spoilers below:

None of this made sense from a purely human aspect. What woman can fight off a man, rehab a house, yet cave in to her separated husband let her stereotypical mother-in-law live with her? Just horrible writing, acting (for the most part) and for a husband who supposedly travels 3 weeks per month, he seemed to be around a heck of a lot. Trust me, skip this one. It was like watching a bad lifetime movie.

Please do not waste your time

Bad acting, except for the old man in the wheelchair! Seemed like a bad movie you'd catch on a Saturday afternoon because you have absolutely nothing else to do. That's about the only time I would recommend watching this. Or if you confined to a hospital bed with no remote in sight and you have no choice but to watch it.

Rhoda is at it again!
princessjasmine1119939 September 2018
This movie was great. I can understand why people don't like it. It doesn't have a huge all-star cast. It's not super bloody and the plot is obvious. But looking past that, this was a fantastic movie. The best part (for me anyway) was seeing Patty McCormack at it again. For horror movie buffs, McCormack started in the original "The Bad Seed" as the adorable Rhoda. If you haven't seen the original, I urge that you do before you watch Rob Lowe on Lifetime. (McCormack will also be in the new Bad Seed FYI) So this movie really felt like an older Rhoda just doing what she does best. Give it a try. If you want blood, monsters, sex, curse words, etc.THIS IS NOT YOUR MOVIE! Other than that you should try it.

Believe the lower ratings
vmalast8 August 2018
This is more like a really bad Lifetime movie. Fluff is fine on occasion but, after 15 minutes, I turned it off. You could guess after a few minutes where the plot was going and was confirmed around the 15 minute mark. Suspense is key in a thriller. Predictable everything!!

Beware the nice old lady next door
phd_travel2 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This Lifetime thriller is quite cute. A separated mother and her little girl move in to a old fixer upper. A nice old lady next door helps her out after she is hurt fixing a fan.

Things get funny when Mother in law moves in to help out.

It's an nice little change of villain the white haired old lady next door. The acting is okay and the story ties in at the end. Enjoyed this one for the difference.

Liked it a lot
abbienicolew14 September 2021
The acting could've been better, some parts of the movie didn't need to be included. I still really enjoyed it though and love the concept of this movie. I'd love if there was a remake one day with more suspense and a better execution.

For "Rhoda" the girl version of Damien to be in this
CranberriAppl19 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is so boring and bad. The Bad Seed is a classic, so you'd almost think by hiring Patty McC, the writers and producers would take advantage of it. Another movie that probably looked better on paper.

One of the issues with these movies is that so many of the villains are waifs or elderly. They always get the upper hand on their victims w/o any struggle at all. Could this happen in real life? Sure. Is this believable on screen? Absolutely not. This old lady is skulking around the home with the family in it, and mind you, it's an old house.....no creaking boards? She keeps breaking into their home Is she a ghost? One of early scenes involved the protag finding a squatter in her house...but then Sylvia is able to waltz right in. I guess Maggie wasn't scared enough to lock the doors? OH! And she also breaks grandma's neck w/her bare hands. And she stabs a man and drags his big burly body on her own. I mean what is this? I'm also supposed to believe this lady can take a wooden spoon and have enough power to stab a man? Another irritating thing about these movies is that the characters almost NEVER connect a new person in their lives with all the death and destruction around them. It's pathetic.

This movie would have been better if they literally lifted all of Rhoda's methods of killing from The Bad Seed. Ice for slip n falls, beating someone with shoes, and fires. That would have been way more believable than what they produced. This also could have been a decent tv ghost/horror movie, but the clownish ways of the villain and the general bad acting makes that impossible. Patty is great and her villain breakdown is good.

PS...you'll figure out the plot anyway, so what was the point of moving out of the house after the daughter's death? If you have secrets wouldn't you stay there and not move to another house in the neighborhood? Also, Lifetime loves to have movies involving house flips. They really know how to run something into the ground.

Not bad for a made-for-TV movie
Entertainment-Buff10 August 2018
Not bad for a made-for-TV movie rated TV-14 on Netflix. I had completely forgotten that Patty McCormick was in this film until the end titles rolled. She had previously played the evil child in "The Bad Seed" (1956).

WHY, Patty?! Are you okay?!
HazelShade20 November 2018
10 stars for the idea of hiring Patty McCormack (at whose doorstep I do NOT lay this steaming pile of lazy thinking) minus 7 stars for troubling us with a French title for no good reason minus 1 star for existing = 2 stars.

Now that the math is out of the way: Patty! Seriously, sweetheart: is it the money?! Do you need money?! I will help you!! Please do not accept projects out of hunger! I will make you dinner!!

Or did you lose a bet?

Or does someone "have some dirt" on you? Say the word: I will break kneecaps!!

Whatever it is, Patty dear, we're worried. Please let us know you're not involved with a gang of rich kids who keep you hopped up on the dopes and force you to act in their lousy films!

This movie is awful beyond any belief
lbonang-7599314 December 2018
This movie is the worst movie I have every had the misfortune of watching. It is inept at every second during its run time. Rampant with awful acting, terrible sound design, atrocious writing, flat cinematography and story beats that make paranormal activity movies look like Shakespeare. You would have to have never seen a horror movie, actually any movie for this movie to surprise you. It's predictable at every step of the way. Not only is it predictable but everyone inside the movie itself acts like they have had their brain surgically removed and replaced with a squirrels nut collection. Every single thing that happens in this movie is nonsensical and pointless. Every death will have you saying "well she's going to get caught right?". This movie expects you to throw out all logic aside to make way for this movies brainless plot. The police in this movie have more than a few chances to arrest Sylvia but instead just ignore every single opportunity and warning sign. Every actor in this movie has zero direction and just seems to feel like they are just in a play reading their lines. Now I will say there are some points were the movie was so baffalingly brain dead that I laughed at it, for example when they decided to place the camera in a bowl of oatmeal in what's supposed to be a thrilling scene. But overall is not nearly bad enough to be a so bad that it's good movie. Instead it's just a boring predictable mess that annoys you at every logical leap that it makes. This movie only exists to be made fun of full stop.

Holy Crap!!!!
Mehki_Girl25 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
What a gawd awful movie. Everything is bad - the acting, the direction, the dialog, the pacing, the screenplay...

It starts off as a supernatural movie, which I was ready for, then just minutes into the movie, you know the whole predictable plot.

The mom was a complete airhead. The best actors in the movie was the old guy and he couldn't talk and was stuck in a wheelchair and the old wino.

Spoilers below...

So, mom, you know this woman is a nutjob. Your daughter is sitting right beside her while she waves a gigantic butcher knife around and you just stand there conversing for 10 minutes while she becomes more and more agitated????

Then, instead of letting the cops do their job, you tamper with a crime scene!!!

There's no rainy afternoon that warrants watching this nonsense. Go watch "Bad Seed" instead.

Something to fall asleep on
scobs3 September 2018
I'm still mad af myself for watching this whole movie. It is predictable the whole way through. At one point the couple is supposed to be arguing and it seems like they are having a hard time not laughing at how ridiculous this movie is. You would get more of a surprise watching paint dry.

Predictable
xxbellaxxxx6 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Bad acting and very predictable, the back stories of the characters were ridiculous. A garden that hadn't been changed in years. No parole officer checking on the old lady. Other neighbours never question her living there,no explanations how an old lady can lift a grown man into the boot of a car,or how she managed to frame the homeless man who the owner forgot had scared the life out of her on the first night ! And the stupid husband Launching a huge knife over a fence not knowing who it will hit!! Avoid.

Okay, if your expectations aren't too high
Wizard-818 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Though I didn't think that this movie was as bad as many people here are claiming it to be, I do understand to a degree why some people have had a negative reaction. It is a pretty low budget affair, having the air of a Hallmark made for television movie all the way through it, though it does look like the filmmakers managed to squeeze every last penny out of their pitiful budget. Also, the story is to a great degree pretty predictable, with plot turns you've probably seen in many other domestic thrillers before. Most disappointing, however, is the climax of the movie. Instead of being thrilling and exciting, the climax has almost no suspense or thrills. On the positive side, the characters are pretty down to earth and believable for the most part. As for Patty McCormack, she manages to play a believably twisted woman (with a sweet side) with a pretty entertaining performance that keeps you watching the movie despite all its shortcomings. I can't speak for everybody, but as I said, I didn't think the movie was THAT bad. You might find it okay as I did... as long as you are in a pretty undemanding mood, as I was when I sat down to watch it.

Horrible Acting
reesejacquez11 July 2019
I have to agree with the reviews, this movie is horrible. Don't waste your time watching this drama/horror story. I stuck it out while I was stalling to decide what series I'd watch next. I gave it 3 stars out of grace because I feel as a writer myself that everyone deserves an opportunity. This is more like a B-movie along side with "Attact of the Killer Tomatoes" that had horrible acting as well, but now a cult classic. Normaly I've been enjoying movies from Netflix, but not this one.

Masterpiece
swaggyPeterGriffin16 March 2021
Wow. Just wow. This has to be the greatest, most underrated film of 2018. The acting is absolutely flawless and honestly, it brings a tear to my eye just thinking about this incredible movie. First of all, the man who plays Gene had an Oscar level performance. George T. Woods played his role with absolute perfection and really brought the whole movie together. Another notable performance is the acting of Patty McCormack. Her role as the creepy old lady that lives across the street was incredible to watch. I couldn't take my eyes off the screen, or my poopy butt out of my chair, even though I drank two large polar pops throughout the movie and felt like I had to unleash enough urine to fill up the Atlantic.

Insane old woman
nightroses7 July 2021
A psychopathic old lady in the neighbourhood, with some horrible secret that she's not telling. She lives with a sick old man in a wheelchair. She's lied about who he is, by telling some people that he's her husband, and others that he's her brother. She's a nasty and malicious piece of work. I found the way this film handled the rest was disjointed and confusing. It was like a comedy when the old psycho woman murders a grandmother, and serious now and then. The ending (no spoilers) made the character make no sense even more! Whoever made this film, needs to go back to school.
