Squid Game: The Challenge (2023)
Is everyone missing the mark?
Those high rankings must have run out of reality TV shows to watch. I'm only going 4 stars because there was a NEW GAME that entertained me for like 10 minutes....
It's so obviously staged (I do not care if the are real people, they are so playing this) and unreal for a "reality" show that it's just really hard to watch, but I had a bad day so anything was better than my own thoughts. This is just really bad, and I probably should have rated it lower than this. If it's a take off on Squid Games but for Anglophiles, why not have some alternate uniquely American/Aussie/English games in it? Rewatching them play things that we've seen and they know the tricks for is a big yawn.
For now I leave it at this since there are still episodes to come (and I hate that too, actually). I think my 4 is generous.
Spencer (2021)
I must've seen a different movie
I've looked through a lot of reviews and while there are some which hint at how I felt, none really encompass my overall feelings.
The movie, IMO was just dull and boring. It dragged on in spite of pretty dresses and great food that made my mouth water. You have a petulant princess making bad choices (and I have mental illness, but that doesn't excuse a LOT of what she does), being constantly late, and generally doing her best to piss off everyone around her.
My main shock was how she couldn't even parent her own children, but Charles did take them into consideration all the time. My absolute horror when she expected her children to tell her when she was acting "silly." She basically was the child in this movie.
Plus having a movie which takes place over a Christmas holiday -- makes it hard for me to see "tradition" as a bad thing. Most families have traditions, especially at holidays, so how can that be made out to be a terrible thing?
As for KS, she still can't act as I didn't understand 1/2 of what she said, and she was just over the top with little to no nuance.
The OA (2016)
upped my rating
Season 2 satisfies my sci fi love a lot more. I did really like season 1, but S2 just adds this deeper level to space/time, the stories, links to people and places and really I'd give it an 8.5. It's a shame because series seem to trend higher than movies in terms of ratings and I'm not sure why? Do we forget the "meh" episodes? Have we just invested so much more time it brings us more completeness? I had no desire to rewatch S1, until I just finished S2. Wishing all this binge watching wasn't at a time in my life where I could stand to go to sleep earlier ;)
Insatiable (2018)
Haven't even finished the series - started rewatching
So I'm not done yet but what I haven't seen in the reviews, and I'll have to watch again, are all those little details! Listen to the songs they pick to use! I want to give the episode I just watched a 10 for using the song from Lost Boys at the end. Definitely hilarious but also so topical and so mind opening to really strongly developed characters in spite of their being obviously exaggerated. Yeah, now that I write this out, I'm going up to 9 with my rating instead of an 8, 10's are saved for the truly greats (very very few). Definitely layers upon layers in here.
The House of Deadly Secrets (2018)
Could there be any more stereotypes?
I don't leave many reviews but I will watch any horror/thriller whatever as they tend to be underrated. This one is SERIOUSLY OVER-rated. I should have checked reviews first, but got lazy.
Possible spoilers below:
None of this made sense from a purely human aspect. What woman can fight off a man, rehab a house, yet cave in to her separated husband let her stereotypical mother-in-law live with her? Just horrible writing, acting (for the most part) and for a husband who supposedly travels 3 weeks per month, he seemed to be around a heck of a lot. Trust me, skip this one. It was like watching a bad lifetime movie.
