Loving Adam Sandler means making your peace with the actor's wildly inconsistent output. It's not like The Sandman has ever been a critical darling; even during his rise to superstardom in the '90s, "Happy Gilmore" and "The Wedding Singer" were the only movies of his that you could reasonably call well-reviewed (and that's coming from an ardent "Billy Madison" defender). But the films that he's churned out under his Happy Madison Productions, which was founded in 1999, have been all over the place quality-wise. Even most die-hard Sandlites probably wouldn't go to the mattresses over stinkers like "Jack and Jill" and "Grown Ups 2."
That's only become doubly true since Sandler entered his alliance with Netflix in the 2010s. Sometimes, you end up with little more than "content" for viewers to stream and immediately forget, but you can also get remarkably good stuff like "The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected...

Sunday Am Update: How bad was this year’s Super Bowl weekend? Realize that Kenneth Branagh’s romance mystery misfire, Death on the Nile, opened to more over the Big Game weekend ($12.8M) two years ago, and that’s when female moviegoers were scared of Omicron!
Super Bowl weekend, despite its damper on Sunday business, used to be a box office frame that could still yield results, even for films aimed at dudes. Like in 2015, when the sixth weekend of American Sniper drummed up $30.7 million, or in 2020, when the third weekend of Bad Boys for Life did $17.6M.
Last year’s Super Bowl weekend totaled $52.6M, per Box Office Mojo, led by Warner Bros’ Magic Mike’s Last Dance, with an $8.3M opening. This year, we’re lower at $40M, -24% from a year ago and that’s because there isn’t a notable major studio wide release. That’s also...

In a recent interview, Loki Season 2 writer Eric Martin responded to those who reacted negatively to the show's newest season, and of the MCU at large.
Summer 2023 saw the long-awaited Disney+ series Secret Invasion disappoint both fans and critics, becoming the McU's first show and third project to receive a "Rotten" score on Rotten Tomatoes. As such, some fans feared that the McU's next project, Loki Season 2, would see a similar fate.
While many did love the new season, its Rotten Tomatoes score did not always reflect consistently reflect that throughout the show's run.

When I saw John Carpenter perform at NYC's Terminal 5 in November of 2017, he introduced his band's version of the "Halloween" theme with a curiously cryptic message. Before dropping the theme's iconic piano-led 5/4 beat, Carpenter simply said to the sold-out crowd: "Remember ... love never dies."
The application of that phrase to "Halloween" holds just as much ambiguity and eerie mystery as Carpenter's immortal 1978 classic does. Throughout that film, Carpenter and his co-writer and producer, Debra Hill, introduce numerous subtexts when it comes to the unknowable origin, motivations, and inner thoughts of "The Shape" aka Michael Myers; not only are there hints toward some psychosexual hang-ups he may have, but the character is deliberately played by multiple actors.
About 10 years prior to that concert, Dimension Films released writer and director Rob Zombie's remake of Carpenter's film, "Halloween." It was met with an almost overwhelming amount of revulsion, as seen in its...

Since "Spider-Man: No Way Home" arrived in 2021 and became a cultural phenomenon, Andrew Garfield's Spidey has finally been getting some love. And you know what? It's about damn time. It was only with "No Way Home" that the Marvel Cinematic Universe seemed to figure out what to do with Tom Holland's webhead, following two movies that seemed to come and go. 2012's "The Amazing Spider-Man" and its sequel, 2014's "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," however, remain ingrained in my memory, mainly for Garfield's charismatic yet emotionally affecting performance as Peter Parker and for his chemistry with Emma Stone's Gwen Stacey.
Unfortunately, the general consensus on these two Marc Webb-directed movies is that they represent the worst of the Spider-Man films — 2007's "Spider-Man 3" notwithstanding. But we were all in the theaters when Garfield's Peter Parker stepped through the portal in "No Way Home." We all heard the...

Marvel Studios has a major problem, and Secret Invasion was just the latest product of a flawed system.
The highly-anticipated show, based on a popular comic book series, ultimately let many fans down, leading to Marvel Studios' first-ever project with a 'Rotten' audience and critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The issues that arose in Marvel's latest project appear entirely story-based, with poor writing and a boring plot. What's possibly most upsetting about this is the loaded cast, starring Samuel L. Jackson, Emilia Clarke, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Olivia Colman, Don Cheadle, and Ben Mendelsohn.

Summer’s tentpole rumble continues this weekend with Paramount’s seventh Transformers movie, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, which is heat-seeking $155 million at the worldwide box office for its opening frame, $100M of that offshore.
The movie reps a concentrated reboot by the studio of the long-in-tooth robots-in-disguise franchise, which has suffered in latter installments from declining ticket sales. This is the second Transformers movie not directed by Michael Bay after 2018’s Bumblebee (though Bay still produces), and looks to distinguish itself from the fray with its introduction of the robotic animals from the Hasbro franchise. Creed II director Steven Caple Jr. is at the helm and the movie stars In the Heights’ Anthony Ramos and The Deuce and Judas and the Black Messiah’s Dominique Fishback. The pic cost a net $195M co-financed by Skydance.

Memorial Day weekend came and went, with Disney's "The Little Mermaid" taking the lion's share of the attention from moviegoers, as expected, with a $95.4 million opening weekend. These Disney live-action remakes generally make a lot of money, and that isn't changing yet (huge budget be damned). Meanwhile, movies like "Fast X" and "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" were still pulling in meaningful amounts of money. Those blockbusters dominated the conversation, and as a result, a trio of new original films flopped hard upon arrival, painting a grim picture of the state of non-branded movies in the theatrical marketplace.
Bert Kreischer's "The Machine," Sebastian Maniscalco's "About My Father," and Gerard Butler's action flick "Kandahar" all arrived in theaters over the holiday weekend -- and all three of them failed to do much business. Across the history of cinematic screw-ups, few have been as notorious or lasting as 1993’s Super Mario Bros. The film – a loose adaptation of Nintendo’s hit platforming franchise, starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo – came to epitomise the “curse” of sub-par game-to-screen adaptations for decades. Hollywood simply didn’t understand video games. Hoskins was oblivious to the film’s origins until he’d already signed on, and who could blame him? Even if he had played the games, the murky, off-putting crime fantasy was unrecognisable from the eye-poppingly colourful frivolity that inspired it. Thirty years later and the Mario games have been adapted again. But this time The Super Mario Brothers Movie suffers from the opposite problem: it understands video games far, far too well.

“Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” is one of the worst-reviewed Marvel movies to date. It has a 48% “Rotten” score on Rotten Tomatoes, which puts it neck-and-neck with “Eternals,” the lowest-scored Marvel movie on the review aggregator at 47%. And audiences aren’t loving it the way they love other Marvel movies, either; it suffered a 69% decline at the box office in its second weekend, the second-biggest drop in Marvel history, according to Variety.
The movie’s underperformance has been hard on screenwriter Jeff Loveness. “To be honest, those reviews took me by surprise,” Loveness told The Daily Beast. “I was in a pretty low spot… Those were not good reviews, and I was like, ‘What the …?’”
Loveness, who won an Emmy in 2020 for writing “The Vat of Acid Episode” of “Rick and Morty,” made his feature debut on the movie, which launches Kang the Conquerer (Jonathan Majors), the big bad of Marvel’s Phase Five.

A week ago, things looked pretty good for Marvel Studios and Disney when "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" opened to a stellar $106 million at the box office. This, despite the fact that the movie was met with a very mixed reception from critics and currently has a "Rotten" score on Rotten Tomatoes at just 48%. But audiences showed they care more about the Marvel Cinematic Universe than they do about the opinions of critics, turning up in droves to see Jonathan Majors as Kang, who is the next Thanos-level threat in the franchise.
Unfortunately, that party was short-lived as director Peyton Reed's "Quantumania" suffered the worst second-weekend drop ever for an MCU movie at the box office -- and one of the worst for any blockbuster that opened to $100 million or more in history. The film plummeted 69.7% for a $32.2 million haul. The good news? That was still enough to beat...

Director Peyton Reed’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania certainly didn’t disappoint in its domestic box debut, with the film flying to a four-day opening of $120 million, one of the best showings ever for the Presidents Day holiday and by far the biggest start for Marvel’s low-key franchise.
Yet the third installment of the Paul Rudd-Evangeline Lilly series is still a cautionary win for Marvel Studios and Disney, which are at a critical juncture as Marvel kicks off Phase 5, and conquering hero Bob Iger returns as Walt Disney Co. CEO. With a 47 percent rating, the film is tied with Eternals (2021) for Marvel’s lowest Rotten Tomatoes score, and perhaps more telling, it earned a B CinemaScore from audiences, one of the few Marvel titles to do so.
Since the first Iron Man ushered in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2008, Kevin Feige’s Marvel Studios has been the envy of Hollywood.

The first season of Netflix’s Ginny and Georgia split the difference between comedy and drama while telling the story of a complicated relationship between a mother and daughter. Season two upped the ante on the storylines, putting the characters in more harrowing situations, the most intense one being the scene where Austin shoots his father Gil.
The scene is appropriately intense, and the production team did consult with gun control advocates to ensure the right tone, but its creation was much more improvisational and fun than the final product.

She also appeared in last year's blockbuster "Jurassic World Dominion."
While Lachman's part in the story is still under wraps, THR's report also includes some plot details for "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes," and the story frankly sounds pretty wild. The follow-up to 2017's "War For The Planet of the Apes" will take place years after the third film in the new franchise and bring viewers to a version of the world that sounds...

Sarah Michelle Gellar has suggested that audiences still have a “backwards” view on female-led superhero films.
In the Nineties, Gellar carved out new ground on TV as the lead in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, in which she played a powerful high-school student fighting against vampires and demons.
However, in a new interview, the 45-year-old claimed that audiences were unwilling to accept women leading in action-packed Marvel films.
“Genre is where women can really succeed and hold an audience,” she told The Guardian.
“Every time a Marvel movie tries to do a female cast, it just gets torn apart… Unfortunately, audiences weren’t as accepting. There’s still this mentality of ‘the male superhero’, this very backwards way of thinking.”
In 2019, Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel was hit by a sexist smear campaign, in which trolls posted fake negative reviews on the superhero film’s Rotten Tomatoes page, causing its score to plummet.

The year 2023 boasts interesting, highly-anticipated movies, from action flicks to historical dramas. One of the newest films to hit theaters is Plane, starring Gerard Butler as a strong-willed commercial pilot. With the actor’s history of playing the tough, determined “everyman,” fans have been lining up to see his latest project. Interestingly, Plane is a movie that has been a few years in the making. With a release date that has changed at least once, many fans are curious about the process of getting the flick to the big screen and which stars are featured in the film.
‘Plane’ was first announced in 2016
Plane tells the story of a commercial pilot named Brodie Torrance. After a forced emergency landing, Torrance quickly realizes that the remote island is controlled by a fierce local militia. A militia leader takes the plane’s passengers hostage, which prompts Torrance to free a convicted murderer...

Sony/eOne’s “The Woman King” is keeping hopes alive for a solid run at the box office, earning 6.85 million on Friday from 3,765 locations and heading for an 18 million opening weekend, according to studio estimates.
That opening weekend would be just a tad higher than the 17.2 million opening for fellow Sony release “Where the Crawdads Sing,” which legged out to an 86 million domestic run thanks to strong word-of-mouth from female audiences. For “The Woman King,” Sony is hoping for a similar long box office run during this sluggish box office period as audience buzz builds.
So far, it looks like Sony’s hopes will be fulfilled. Along with excellent Rotten Tomatoes scores of 94 critics and 99 audience, “The Woman King” has earned an A+ from opening night audiences on CinemaScore. Next weekend, the film will go against the tepidly received “Don’t Worry Darling” and a re-release of James Cameron’s “Avatar,...

Labor Day weekend saw blockbusters old and new buoyed by cheap tickets, as was a limited openings like Saloum with multiple sold out screenings at two theaters, including every showtime on Saturday.
Over 3,000 theaters, including IFC Center and Alamo Drafthouse LA, where the French-Senegalese indie film began a qualifying run, offered 3 tickets for National Cinema Day. The promotional event is seeing preliminary box office returns of 24.3 million dollars for Saturday, according to Comscore. That’s 9 ahead of the preceding Saturday, even with discounted admissions, but strongly favored re-releases from Spider Man: No Way Home from last year to Jaws, from 1979, and tentpoles that have been in theaters for weeks and months led by Top Gun: Maverick. The box office was up 100 on Saturday from Friday but skewed heavily to its top ten titles.

Sony/Columbia’s “Bullet Train” kicked off the traditionally slow August box office with a 30.1 million opening weekend from 4,375 theaters. While that is the second-highest opening for an R-rated movie this year, it now faces a long road to turn a profit against its reported 90 million production budget before marketing costs.
While critics reviews have been mixed, audience reception has been more positive with a 78 audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 63 recommend rating on Comscore/Screen Engine’s PostTrak. Sony anticipates that the film will gain buzz among adults, particularly Gen X men, as a “Deadpool”-esque gory action comedy and leg out with no direct competition coming up this month.
“Bullet Train” is also getting some support from overseas markets, making 32.4 million from 57 territories for a global opening of 62.5 million. The film is tracking similarly to the 2015 R-rated action film “Kingsman: The Secret Service,” which grossed 128 million domestic...

A week after storming multiplexes with a superheroic 185 million domestic bow, Disney’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness picked up right where it left off, grossing an additional 61 million over its second weekend in North America. Not surprisingly, rival studios for the most part chose to steer clear of Marvel’s latest box-office behemoth—all except for Universal, which unveiled its Zac Efron-led remake of the 1984 Stephen King adaptation, Firestarter, and failed to produce any sparks in the marketplace, bowing to a truly scary 3.8 million.

Warner Bros.’ Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore whirled up 6M in Thursday previews that started at 2PM at 3,350 venues.
The David Yates directed J.K. Rowling co-scripted movie is expected to make between 45M-50M over the Easter holiday weekend stateside; 73 of all K-12 schools off today according to Comscore. Dumbledore is also expanding into 44 more offshore markets including France, Italy and Korea and looks to make at least 40M+ abroad, bringing the threequel’s global take to 157M. Rotten Tomatoes critics gave Dumbledore a 51 Rotten rating which is an improvement on part 2’s 36 Rotten but still off the first movie’s 74 fresh.
That figure is under the preview grosses of the first Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them in 2016 which made 8.75M (before a 29.66M first Friday and 74.4M opening) and its 2018 sequel Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald which did 7.3M in its Thursday alone (not counting...

In the wake of redefining the measurement of binge-watching on streaming, Netflix’s new top 10 film chart for the week of Nov. 8-14 lists Rawson Marshall Thurber’s $200M action feature Red Notice as the No. 1 film for the period with 148.7M hours watched since Nov. 12; easily the most watched movie ever on Netflix for a pic in its first weekend.
We reported yesterday that Samba TV clocked 4.2M U.S. households who tuned into the Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot, Ryan Reynolds movie for at least five minutes, more than any Disney+ movie to date and HBO Max theatrical titles in their respective weekend debuts.
There was also some Johnson spillover in the top 10 from Red Notice with the first weekend of Sony’s Jumanji: The Next Level on Netflix which notched 10th place with 6.76M hours watched.

I disagree with other critics all the time, and don’t generally blink an eye about it, but as soon as the news dropped that “Eternals,” the Marvel epic directed by Chloé Zhao, had received the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score (48% fresh) of any film in the 13-year history of the MCU, making it the first official “Rotten” film in the series, my hidden-agenda detector went on high alert. Rotten Tomatoes scores are, to put it mildly, not something to be regarded as if they’d been handed down on stone tablets. Yet based on that score, and much of the web chatter about the movie, and the fact that it received a mere “B” from audiences polled by CinemaScore (horrors!), a meme has set in about “Eternals”: “Worst. Marvel. Movie. Ever.” Or, at the very least, a creative debacle. If you believe, as I do, that that’s an outlandish piece of hyperbole,...

The domestic box office is in store for a resurge again with Disney/Marvel’s deep universe IP Eternals this weekend. The movie is heading toward a $75 million opening frame in 4,000 locations, with previews beginning Thursday at 6 p.m.
Fandango is reporting that the Chloé Zhao-directed feature is now the second best preseller among this year’s blockbusters per advance ticket sales. Eternals is pacing ahead of Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which previously held the position, and behind only Marvel’s Black Widow.
In overall exhibitor presales, which includes Fandango, Deadline hears that Eternals has already banked $13M, which is 13% behind Black Widow at the same point in time and 25% ahead of Shang-Chi. The movie is tracking strong with males, Hispanics, African Americans and Asian audiences.
The slowdown from the pic’s $80M-plus original projection stems from being the worst-reviewed MCU movie to date at 54% Rotten.

Warner Bros fired up James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad last night, the studio’s first Thursday preview in a long time — arguably since pre-pandemic. The DC ensemble is seeing $4.1 million off showtimes that began at 7 p.m., the biggest number for a R-rated movie during the Covid era.
There haven’t been many R-rated movies during the pandemic; previous notable Thursday previews include Funimation’s Demonslayer with $3.8M and Universal/Blumhouse’s R-rated The Forever Purge posting $1.3M. The Suicide Squad‘s Thursday is also a hair ahead of its previous DC spinoff Birds of Prey, which did $4M on its Thursday before the pandemic in February 2020; that start translated to a $12.9M first Friday and $33M opening weekend.

Friday AM Update: Refresh for updates Universal’s Old grossed $1.5M on Thursday night from 2,750 theaters that began showtimes at 7Pm. This topped the Thursday night results for Paramount’s Snake Eyes which did $1.4M, also starting at 7Pm at 2,662 theaters. Both titles are respecting a theatrical window.
As far as who wins at the box office, Old or Snake Eyes, it’s a game of rock-paper-scissors between the studios as both pics are expected to land at the top of the charts with mid teen results.
The result for M. Night Shyamalan’s Old is ahead of other recent genre pandemic wide releases’ preview nights, i.e. Escape Room: Tournament of Champions ($1.2M) and Forever Purge ($1.33M) as well as the filmmaker’s 2015 thriller The Visit ($1M), but it’s behind his Thursday previews of 2016’s Split ($2M, 7Pm start) and 2019’s Glass ($3.7M, 7Pm).

Check out this pilot for a possible horror tv series, Rot (Rotten), from Dutch filmmaker Nick Jongerius, director of the 2016 horror flick The Windmill. Daan still regularly has nightmares about his dead domineering father and bears the scars from his belt on his body. But shortly after the birth of his own son, Daan starts to literally see his father in ghostly apparitions surrounding a patch of mould on the wall in the baby’s room. Daan tries everything to remove the mould, but it keeps returning and growing – just like the manifestations of his dead father. As Daan’s paranoid behavior worsens and...

After countless delays, Wonder Woman 1984 is finally almost here. With theaters still in poor shape, Warner Bros. elected to release the much-anticipated DC sequel on HBO Max domestically this Christmas Day, with the rest of the world able to catch it on the big screen later this week. That means the first reviews are already out for the movie, then, along with the film’s Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic scores. And thankfully, they’re pretty positive.
At the time of writing, WW84 sits at an impressive 89% on Rt based on 61 reviews. 54 critics have rated it Fresh so far, while 7 have handed it a Rotten rating. Overall, that gives it a 7.3/10 average rating. Among the top critics’ opinions on the site is The Financial Times’ Wendy Ide, who describe it as “a dayglo romp” with “thrilling set pieces and [an] optimistic depiction of humanity” that is “exactly the kind of heady escapism we need right now.

“Rotten” doesn’t begin to describe the stench emanating from the state of Denmark in “Men & Chicken,” the latest — and by far most difficult to classify — feature from director Anders Thomas Jensen, best known abroad for his screenwriting collaborations with Oscar winner Susanne Bier. This staggering account of family dysfunction, secret-hoarding and tragedy on the far fringes of Danish society actually hews much closer to Jensen’s previous dark-comedy directorial efforts “Flickering Lights” and “Adam’s Apples,” being a bizarre parable of five ill-mannered and grotesquely disfigured half-brothers brought together by their father’s death. sure to perplex the gonzo-amenable audience most apt to embrace it abroad.
Beginning with the glowing good cheer of a fairy tale, but quick to reveal the sinister social satire that undermines its misleadingly whimsical opening narration, “Men & Chicken” presents two brothers, Elias and Gabriel (David Dencik), who have nothing in common but their generally disheveled appearance,...
