Otto tells Dr. Sumner and the ship's crew about a dream he had where they all drowned except Sumner and a whale swallows a dinghy or little boat Sumner's in. Sumner tells Otto with certainty that dreams are just dreams and how the mind clears itself out. I believe Otto's dream is a terrifying vision that will come true. Otto's dialogue always feels like prophetic horror. Roland Moller's delivery is perfect as Otto. Stephen Graham's Captain Brownlee dies a brutal, slow, suffering death after Drax cracks his skull. Graham's blood curdling screams and moans of agony are what nightmares are made of. He lingers between the living and the dead until he fades away. Colin Farrell's presence as Drax is a walking nightmare that you want to wake up from, but he's a murderous reality. With Farrell, it's the eyes. Piercing and terrifying. (Even under pounds of prosthetics in The Batman, there's an intensity and hunger for power in his eyes as The Penguin). Sumner, battling withdrawals in the present, has a nightmarish dream about his past military superior who ruined his military career and reputation as a surgeon, which led to his fresh start on the present-day, ill-fated journey to the arctic. After their vacated ship is wrecked and swallowed by the sea, Sumner falls asleep but awakens to howling winds, a brutal arctic storm, fire and screams outside his tent. It looks like Hell on ice. He closes his eyes, in desperation, hoping, wishing, desperately trying to wake up from his horrifying dream. He opens his eyes to his reality - a nightmare. Jack O'Connell's acting, the direction and cinematography are all brilliant in this moment. I had to back it up five times and rewatch it. My absolute favorite episode so far.

A pretty good episode, surprising and fast-paced; it comes a long way from the beginning to the end, which I something I really appreciate. Part of me thinks we've already seen this before in THE TERROR, but we'll see what happens next.

Even reviews are small pieces of art, which is why the better ones are given more attention than others. I am not a great writer and do not have the tools to convey.
All I can say is that this episode made me feel things incredibly deeply which is what I value above everything else. The scenes around the captain dieing, the dialogue between the doctor and Drax in the tent and the music are the most memorable.
The challenge to the doctor's character by Drax in the tent was absolutely fascinating and entrancing. The way Drax appears just a simple thug but we see his savage wisdom question the doctor's self assured righteousnous - incredible and inspiring.
