Panto and Murder, great fun.

How wonderful to get another Christmas episode of Father Brown, following on from last year's successful offering. With so many dark and gritty dramas on recently it was nice to have something fluffy, fun and thoroughly entertaining on, whilst also providing some mystery.

The plot was interesting, the delivery was light hearted, definitely fluffy, but hugely uplifting also. The cast were truly brilliant as always, Mark Williams a joy as ever, but I feel I have to sing the praises of Jack Deam, I've been critical of his Inspector Mallory in the past, but praise where it's due, I loved him in this, he showed some heart and a sense of humour, let's hope it's a sign of things to come.

The show definitely misses the wonderful Nancy Carroll, Lady Felicia and Mrs McCarthy make a great team, let's hope she's back soon. It was great to have Sid back though, I wonder if the regulars realised how popular the show would become.

Feel good viewing, what Christmas should be! Can't wait for the new series. 9/10

The Tree of Truth
Prismark1018 December 2017
A seasonal episode as the villagers prepare for the Christmas pantomime, it is Inspector Mallory who thinks that a miscarriage of justice has taken place where a simple innocent young man pleaded guilty to the murder of a temptress who took part in the local amateur dramatics society.

Mallory' s investigation rubs a form police superior up the wrong way which includes the inspector and the sergeant being drafted in as pantomime dames. So he turns to Father Brown for help. As always Father Brown was already sniffing around and already had a line up of suspects.

A nice effective mystery, A few red herrings, Sid Carter returns for this episode as well .

Best Episode of the season, and all-time favorite!
Not only is this a heartwarming Christmas time episode, but an excellent episode of the series over all. Good story involving an old murder, a wrongly convicted man, and a lot of good touching and funny moments as well as a chance for Jack Deam's Inspector Mallery to really shine, in moments both funny as usual (Sgt. Goodfellow "volunteers" a very unwilling Inspector Mallory to participate in the Christmas panto show, in "drag" no less as Cinderella's stepsisters! loved watching the scenes of them doing their bits on stage, especially funny visual of seeing the ever-scowling Mallory in "drag" dress as the wicked stepsister, still wearing his "cop mustache"!), but also surprisingly touching and humanizing as well. Mallory takes the lead for once in trying to correct an injustice-- he feels guilty when he realizes that a very simple and harmless young man (who's about the same age as his own son) has been wrongly convicted of murder and tries to genuinely do the right thing in re-investigating the case, which somehow seems to ruffle the feathers of an indignant superior officer of his, so for once Mallory welcomes the help of Father Brown (or the "Padre", as he always so amusingly calls him). Deam really shines in this one, and I wish they'd allow Mallory more episodes like this where we get to see the charmingly unexpected touches of humanity hidden behind his gruff exterior, which would make more sense both story and character-wise that at this point in the series, to finally have him evolve beyond always being resistant/reluctant/grouchy about Father Brown's help/assistance (funny though that is, that his apoplectic fits when the Padre always seems to convienently pop up and interfere when there's a murder to be solved) to finally grudgingly accept it since it would show he's smart enough to secretly admire the Padre deep down, and make for a charming comic friendship, not unlike Captain Stottlemeyer (played by another great mustachioed character actor, Ted Levine) finally did with overcoming his own resentment/reluctance at accepting quirky Adrian Monk's help on the other great and funny crime series "Monk". The writers of Father Brown would be smart to use the light humor and warm character dynamics of this particular episode (my favorite of the entire series) more often.

The Christmas episode I didn't know I needed

I love this episode so much! Inspector Mallory and Goodfellow are out to right a wrong and regardless of being threatened to being demoted to traffic cops, they search for the truth to clear an innocent man. Bonus, Sid Parker returns for this episode and Father Brown is the cleric that everyone wishes they had in their life. The ending is pure joy and shows the true meaning of a Christmas miracle.

Robert Ewens as Benny Clough
safenoe23 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
"I am an actor with a disability - not a disabled actor" is the inspired line from Robert Ewens's social media site. Robert plays the central role of Benny Clough in this season six opener that doubles up as the Christmas episode of Father Brown, which I like but I don't watch as consistently as I should like I do for Vera, Midsomer Murders, Agatha Raisin, Lewis, Inspector Morse and Rosemary and Thyme.

The final scene of Benny and his mom reuniting after his release from prison was very moving, with the cast of characters making it a truly Father Brown Christmas. I'm thankful I've watched this episode for the first time at Christmas time.

The pantomime scenes were heartening and uplifting.

Warning: Spoilers
"Father Brown" is a TV show, which I started to watch out of boredom about a month ago. Never been a fan of G.K Chesterton's stories, but I thought that the cast of the show and concept seemed interesting enough. Sadly, "The Tree of Truth", was not a great way to start the sixth season of a perfectly fine series.

Let's start with good, shall we?

. The production values are great. The direction, music fit the scenery and the script has some occasional spark. The acting is mostly decent. Mark Williams is outstanding as Father Brown- what a great casting. Sorcha Cusack's Missis Mccarthy and Emer Kenny's Bunty are easy to warm to as well. Jack Deam is okay, though he does get unbearable at times. Also do not mind John Burton as a fellow sergeant.

. The story of "The Tree of Truth" has some heartwarming moments. The holiday mood is well captured and Charlotte Lucas is notable out of the guest star performances. There are some nice red herrings here and there. Personally thought the ending, when Missis Mccarthy playes the fairy godmother was particularly humorous.

But...

. The story of "The Tree of Truth" is not one of "Father Brown's" best. It is quite mediocre (at least for me) and didn't engage as much as I would have wanted to. Some pacing problems are to be found here as well, because the murder mystery does not get going until 15 minutes in. Also, what I hate about murder mysteries is that the sleuth has information that we do not know at all. The culprit (a drug dealer) was not notable either.

Overall, an enjoyable entry, though not one of "Father Brown's" best.

Destruction of Outstanding Cast :(

Warning: Spoilers
First of all this has been one of my favorite programs. It has been insanely too long in between seasons. I was wondering if it had been canceled. This episode was ok lacked the usual depth of story. Instead Lady Felicia is being written out - off to Africa and it looks like for at least the remainder of the season. Bunty ornery late teen cannot replace the performance of Nancy Carroll. Sid, where is Sid. I looked ahead to the future episodes and he seems to vanish. Inspector Mallory is more annoying than ever, sorry put a grumpy civil servant is the extent of his contribution. I really hope thinks improve, really cannot understand who imagined that removing the Lady would benefit the story line. The opposite is truth.
