There's a case to be made that Chris Hemsworth is the most talented of the Marvel Studios Chrises. He's got great comedic energy and leaned into that with his later performances as Thor (even if he admittedly went overboard in "Thor: Love and Thunder"). His vengeance-driven God of Thunder is the highlight of "Infinity War" too.
He's also making interesting career choices. I'm a Captain America fan, but Chris Evans has not challenged himself as an actor since "Snowpiercer." ("Knives Out" was just him dusting off his pre-Cap screen persona of a cocky a-hole.) Chris Pratt has waltzed his way into being Hollywood's leading voice actor despite his anonymous performances in "The Super Mario Brothers" and soon, "The Garfield Movie." Hemsworth takes paycheck gigs (see: "Extraction" and his voice acting turn as young Optimus Prime in "Transformers: One" this coming Summer), but he shows ambition too. Bridges received the iconic Chaplin Award as his former co-stars Chris Pine, Cynthia Erivo, Sharon Stone, Chris Pine, and Rosie Perez applauded him. Many supporters couldn’t help but notice the latter actor. Perez turns 60 this year and still looks amazing.

Bridges made the announcement during a recent appearance on the Film Comment podcast, confirming that he will “play a part” in the film. Continuing, he expressed that he has “admired” the work of the new movie’s star, Jared Leto, and is “excited” to work with him. He also spoke about his anticipation to “see what the technology is gonna be all about.”
Bridges starred in the original Tron as video game developer Kevin Flynn and and his program, Clu. He later reprised the role in 2010’s Tron Legacy. Radio Silence follow up Ready Or Not and two Scream films with the bloody and very 18-rated Abigail. Here’s our review.
It was only after walking out of a screening of Abigail that I appreciated just how much of it had been let out of the bag via its promotion. Not the ending or anything, but more the way the film turns from being the kidnap heist thriller it starts off as into, well, something else. I mention this not by way of criticism, but more to explain why this review isn’t going anywhere near stuff even shown in the trailer. I saw this cold and had an absolute blast. I can’t give you an honest reading as to how I’d feel had I known what was around the corner.
Still. I’m hardly playing surprises to suggest that there’s a horror tinge to this,...

Cailee Spaeny Talks ‘Civil War,’ Taylor Swift’s ‘Mare of Easttown’ Fandom and Manifesting ‘Matrix 5’
If Civil War star Cailee Spaeny isn’t already on every casting shortlist in town, then her 2024 is about to etch her name in stone.
Coming off of her Golden Globe-nominated performance as Priscilla Presley in Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla, the Missouri native returns to the big screen with another critically acclaimed A24 film in Alex Garland’s Civil War. The duo previously collaborated together on Garland’s sci-fi miniseries Devs, and fulfilling a promise he made years ago to write his cast new roles, Spaeny is one of six Devs actors in the British filmmaker’s new action-thriller.
Spaeny plays aspiring war photographer, Jessie Cullen, and after being saved on the streets of New York City by her photojournalist hero, Lee Smith (Kirsten Dunst), she maneuvers her way into joining Lee’s road trip to Washington, D.C. Along with two other journalists, Joel (Wagner Moura) and Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson...

The most unexpected movie news of the day hit the internet today: Drew Goddard is attached to co-write and direct a fifth "The Matrix" film for Warner Bros. Discovery. It's unexpected largely because Lana Wachowski -- one of the key creative voices of this franchise, a director of the original trilogy, and the solo director of 2021's "The Matrix Resurrections" -- is stepping into an executive producer role this time around, since Goddard reportedly came to the studio with an idea for a new entry in this franchise that excited the folks in charge. On the surface, he may seem like a somewhat odd choice to usher "The Matrix" into the future, but several projects in Goddard's filmography lead us to believe he could be a great choice to take the reins.

The Matrix franchise is one of the most beloved ones when it comes to the action film genre. Predominantly known for revolutionizing the action genre with well-choreographed action sequences and slow-motion effects, the franchise has a cult following with fans from across the world.
With its ensemble cast led by Keanu Reeves, the franchise has four movies so far. However, that is about to change soon if recent updates are anything to go by. While it is no secret that Reeves’ potential attachment to any project is enough for fans to get excited, this time around, that does not seem to be the case.

A quarter of a century after the first Matrix movie, the franchise will be reloaded and refreshed with a script and direction by Drew Goddard, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Goddard’s enlistment represents a departure for the series, which was directed and written by the Wachowskis for the first three episodes and Lana Wachowski for 2021’s The Matrix Resurrections. Lana will serve as an executive producer for the new film.
“It is not hyperbole to say The Matrix films changed both cinema and my life,” Goddard said in a statement.

Ready to see how much farther down the rabbit hole goes? A new chapter of The Matrix franchise is about to start, as the first film not directed by one the Wachowski siblings is now in the works. Currently known as The Matrix 5, the new movie has The Cabin In The Woods' Drew Goddard on board to write and direct this outing.
Lana Wachowski, who directed 2021's The Matrix Resurrections, is on board to executive produce this effort for Warner Bros.
Naturally, plot details are being withheld for now, nor do we know who from the films — including the likes of Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss – might be returning, if any. All Warners president of production Jesse Ehrman would tease is that the story will advance the established world without straying too far from what made the series a success.

Whoa! A new Matrix movie is in the works, with The Cabin in the Woods filmmaker Drew Goddard sorting red and blue pills for another chapter in the legendary action science-fiction franchise Lana and Lilly Wachowski created. Obviously, Warner Bros. is the studio with Lana Wachowski as an executive producer. Goddard is dialing in as the project’s director and writer. However, it remains uncertain if Keanu Reeves, Carrie Anne-Moss, Laurence Fishburne, Hugo Weaving, and Jada Pinkett Smith will return for the next series installment.
“Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25-years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters,” said Jesse Ehrman, Warner Bros. Get ready to return to "The Matrix," this time with a brand new filmmaker at the helm. Warner Bros. has indeed decided to revisit one of the most beloved action/sci-fi franchises of all time, with Drew Goddard ("The Cabin in the Woods") set to write and direct the forthcoming sequel installment. This will mark the first time since the original movie hit theaters in 1999 that neither Lana nor Lilly Wachowski will not be involved in a directing capacity.
According to Variety, Lana Wachowski is on board as an executive producer for the new film, which does not currently have a title. Plot details are being kept under wraps at this time. There's also no word yet on casting, so it's unclear if Keanu Reeves or Carrie Anne-Moss, for example, will return. Goddard had this to say about it:

Lana Wachowski, who helmed the most recent “Matrix” installment, 2021’s “Resurrections,” is attached as an executive producer.

Anthony Chen's slow-burn character study is essentially a showcase for its star Cynthia Erivo, who after scene stealing turns in the likes of Widows and Bad Times At The El Royale and her lead performance in Harriet, proves she can not only carry a film but lift it emotionally beyond the script.
Based on the book by Alexander Maksik and adapted by the author and Susanne Farrell for the screen, Erivo plays Jacqueline, a Liberian refugee, whose experience on a Greek holiday island is far from a sun-kissed getaway. A liminal space already, thanks to all those holidaymakers coming and going, she exists in an even more precarious state. In the here and now, she is on the fringes, stealing sugar packets to keep herself going and olive oil as a way to generate a bit of cash by offering tourists foot massages on the beach. But Jacqueline is also emotionally.

Alex Garland's new film "Civil War" recently premiered at SXSW in Austin, Texas and to say it's going to be one of the most talked-about movies of the year might be an understatement. It's a movie with an awful lot to say, presenting ideas in very unique ways, particularly for a war film. /Film's own Jacob Hall said in his review that the film "is less about the politics of right now, and more about the horror that accompanies a world beyond politics." To that end, Garland went to great lengths to not glorify the horrors of war, and that extended to the film's soundtrack.
Garland and the cast participated in a Q&a following the film's premiere at the festival, which I attended. "Contemporary music didn't work," the filmmaker said addressing the use of a needle drop from legendary hip-hop group De La Soul in the film. "It suddenly,...

Cassandra Webb (Dakota Johnson) in Columbia Pictures’ ‘Madame Web’
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is in a weird place right now. Since the end of Phase 3 and “The Infinity Saga,” the movies seem to be just throwing stuff against a wall to see what sticks. Unfortunately, Madame Web doesn’t quite stick.
Madame Web is about a New York City paramedic named Cassandra Webb (Dakota Johnson) who, after a near-death experience, discovers that she has clairvoyant powers. Meanwhile, a dark figure named Ezekiel Sims (Tahar Rahim), who also has clairvoyancy (as well as other spider-like powers), has dreams of three young women named Julia (Sydney Sweeney), Mattie (Celeste O’Connor), and Anya (Isabela Merced) who will develop similar powers to his and eventually kill him. Cassandra’s abilities allow her to detect Ezekiel’s plan and she vows to stop him. But to save their future, she must confront her own past.

The trailer for "Wicked" just premiered during the Super Bowl and it features recognizable stars like Bowen Yang and Ariana Grande. But playing the future Wicked Witch Elphaba is someone who might be hard to recognize under all that green make-up: Cynthia Erivo. She's not a household name, but there's a decent chance you've seen (or heard) her somewhere without realizing it.
Erivo is an English actress who rose to prominence with one of her first major theater roles: Celie Harris in the musical stage adaptation of "The Color Purple." She went on to feature in the musical film "Beyond the Lights," then took on the role of Chenice in the West End musical "I Can't Sing!" The name of that show was misleading: Erivo very much could sing, and would continue receiving bigger and better roles as a result. Recently, Steven Yeun announced his departure from the film, which left the production with a pretty big problem to solve.
According to Deadline, Lewis Pullman is the man who has been tasked with solving that problem. The 30-year-old actor, best known for his work in movies like "Top Gun: Maverick" and "The Strangers: Prey at Night," is now poised to join his biggest franchise yet. Jake Schreier is directing "Thunderbolts," which is expected to begin filming in the coming months. While plot details have yet to be revealed, the Thunderbolts are not unlike DC's Suicide Squad, in that it's historically a team of villains...

It was reported earlier that Steven Yeun was set to make his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the Thunderbolts film. Unfortunately, scheduling issues that cropped up due to last year’s dual strikes in Hollywood would now prevent Yeun from participating in filming. The actor felt remorse for the dilemma and wanted to make it clear that he hopes to join the MCU in the future, “I wanna do a Marvel movie. I have some ideas.” Yeun would also apologize to the fans for holding up the production, “It took a lot of drafts on email to make sure that I conveyed the sincerity of how sorry I was to have to back out.” Deadline is now reporting that Top Gun: Maverick‘s Lewis Pullman is now in talks with Marvel Studios to be Yeun’s replacement. Pullman, the son of Independence Day star Bill Pullman, can currently...

Lewis Pullman is the top choice to replace Steven Yeun in Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts, sources confirmed to Deadline. If a deal closes, he would star opposite Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Sebastian Stan and Wyatt Russell, previously announced as the main ensemble of the pic during D23 in 2022.
Marvel Studios had no comment.
Deadline broke that Yeun had been a part of the Thunderbolts cast but had to back out after production was pushed because of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, creating a scheduling issue for the recent Beef Emmy winner.
Jake Schreier is set as director of the new Marvel tentpole. Black Widow scribe Eric Pearson is penning the script, with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige producing. Not much is known about the plot of the film, but the comics revolve around a group of villains who are sent on missions commissioned by the government.

Lewis Pullman may be getting a jolt, courtesy of Marvel Studios. The Top Gun: Maverick actor is Marvel’s top choice to star in Thunderbolts, and has an offer for the role vacated by Steven Yeun earlier this month.
Marvel and reps for Pullman did not respond to requests for comment.
Yeun was attached to Thunderbolts in February 2023, though Marvel did not officially announce his casting. But on Jan. 2, news broke that the Oscar-nominated actor was departing the project centering on Marvel’s villains and antiheroes.
Thunderbolts was hit by delays due to the writers and actors strikes of 2023, with its release date pushed a year to July 25, 2025. The film has a cast that includes Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Jake Schreier is directing the feature, which has not yet begun filming.

Exclusive: Skydance Sports has closed a deal with Gary Ross to rewrite and direct Old Time Hockey, from an original screenplay written by Kevin Jakubowski. The film will be produced by Skydance Sports and Jeremy Latcham.
The original screenplay is set in the rust belt of Pennsylvania involving a high school hockey rivalry from the mid-’90s that gets re-kindled 25 years later.
Ross is no stranger to uplifting sports movies as he directed and wrote the hit horse racing pic Seabiscuit, which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. The four-time Oscar nominee has made a career out of writing and directing hit pics that include Pleasantville, The Hunger Games, and most recently Ocean’s 8 starring Sandra Bullock.

Cailee Spaeny’s star-making turn as Priscilla Presley in Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla comes as no surprise to anyone who’s followed her young career so far. The Springfield, Missouri native has consistently stolen scenes since her feature film debut in 2018’s Pacific Rim Uprising, and she’s only followed suit through a wide variety of roles in Bad Times at the El Royale, How It Ends and Mare of Easttown. Spaeny’s quick climb is all the more impressive when you consider that she originally moved to Los Angeles with dreams of becoming a teenage pop star.
Prior to Priscilla, perhaps her most acclaimed role was as Lyndon on Devs, Alex Garland’s sci-fi gem of a miniseries that FX on Hulu aired in March 2020. Garland was enamored with Spaeny and the rest of his cast to such a degree that he voiced his desire to reunite someday soon,...

This October, in addition to the expected host of horror films and ritual “Over The Garden Wall” rewatches (you know who you are), there are some breakout performances on the horizon. Maybe the best cinematic reaction in “Lessons in Chemistry” (starting on Apple TV+ October 13) comes from Lewis Pullman, while Caelie Spaeny more than holds her own against Jacob Elordi’s Elvis in “Priscilla.” Pullman and Spaeny share a credit in common, in fact: a film celebrating its five-year anniversary on October 12 and one that, in many ways, created a blueprint for some of the most inventive storytelling we’ve seen in the years since.

The director of "The French Connection" and "The Exorcist" was recently gearing us for the release of what will now serve as his final bow, "The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial." The film is based on Herman Wouk's courtroom stage drama of the same name, itself adapted from Wouk's own 1952 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. It also rounds out what could be considered an unofficial trilogy of plays-turned-films directed by Friedkin after his previous two non-documentary features, "Bug" and "Killer Joe" (both of which were based on plays by Tracy Letts).
"The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial" centers around one Lieutenant Stephen Maryk (Jake Lacy), a Naval officer who is put on trial for mutiny after he forcibly relieves the captain of the USS Caine, Lieutenant Commander Phillip Queeg (Kiefer Sutherland), from his duties, believing him to be mentally unfit.

Roughly a month before Venice Film Festival’s 2023 lineup announcement, the buzz around the competition is heating up with several star-studded films by heavyweight directors in the mix, including Pablo Larrain (“El Conde”), Michael Mann (“Ferrari“), Sofia Coppola (“Priscilla“), Yorgos Lanthimos (“Poor Things”) and Michel Franco (“Memory”).
These titles are believed to have been officially invited to the Lido in competition, according to sources.
Larraín’s follow-up to “Spencer,” “El Conde” depicts dictator Augusto Pinochet as a Vampire with a cast led by Chilean star Alfredo Castro.
Another film with a genre element, Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” is a surrealist science-fiction romance based on an adaptation of Alasdair Grey’s novel of the same name, and starring Emma Stone as Belle Baxter, a Frankenstein-like woman who is brought back to life after her brain is replaced with that of her unborn child. Stone stars opposite Willem Dafoe, Mark Ruffalo, Christopher Abbott and Margaret Qualley.

Remember Priscilla Presley in Elvis? No? Don’t blame you. Olivia DeJonge was great, don’t get us wrong, but there wasn’t much room for her in the film’s two-and-a-half hours, and there was a lot of other stuff going on. Baz Luhrmann’s neon rollercoaster through Vegas! Austin Butler’s wiggling hips! Tom Hanks’ accent! Overwhelming. Now, though, the first trailer for Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla promises to tell the other side of the story which Luhrmann cartwheeled through in Elvis. Priscilla is based on Priscilla’s autobiography Elvis & Me, and will track her life – from leaving home to live with Elvis in his giganto-mansion Graceland, through their life together. Watch the teaser:
As per its title, the Priscilla teaser focuses primarily on the woman herself, with a few quick flashes of Elvis in the mix. “Priscilla, what about boys at school?” asks her mother, played...
