This year featured two feature-length adaptations of Philip Roth novels. One was James Schamus’ “Indignation,” based on Roth’s 2008 novel, while the other was Ewan McGregor’s directorial debut “American Pastoral,” based on Roth’s 1997 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel.
The film starred McGregor himself as Seymour “Swede” Levov, a former high school athlete turned successful businessman with a beauty queen (Jennifer Connelly) as a wife. But when their politically radical daughter Merry (Dakota Fanning) is accused of a violent crime, Swede is forced to make sense of the chaos that is his life. It also stars Rupert Evans (“The Man in the High Castle”), Valorie Curry (“Veronica Mars”), David Strathairn (“Good Night, and Good Luck”) and Uzo Aduba (“Orange Is the New Black”).
