The Making of Caboblanco (1980)

*** 1/2 (out of 4)

Stephen Peck (son of Gregory) wrote, directs and narrates this twenty-seven minute documentary that takes a look at the making of CABOBLANCO, the 1980 Charles Bronson film.

In this documentary we get plenty of behind-the-scenes footage as well as interviews with Bronson, director J.. Lee Thompson and cast members Dominique Sanda, Fernando Rey and Jason Robards. The actual quality of CABOBLANCO has been debated by Bronson fans for decades but this documentary is a lot of fun to watch because of all the on set footage there is, which gives you some great shots of Bronson and Thompson working together. The interviews are especially good even though it appears Bronson wasn't all that talkative and they had to get his stories over a period of takes.

Warning: Spoilers
This 27-minute documentary provides a pretty entertaining and illuminating portrait on the making of the oddball Charles Bronson vehicle "Cabo Blanco." Director J. Lee Thompson reveals that he likes to delay the first shot of a film for as long as possible and mentions a subplot concerning a giant squid that was ultimately dropped from the picture. Dominique Sanda admits that American movies tend to be more superficial than European ones. Fernando Rey discusses the necessity for being well prepared and confesses that he prefers working in a studio lot over working on location. Jason Robards points out that that stage acting is far more demanding and exhausting than film acting. Moreover, we also learn that the main character Giff Hoyt's bar was a set that had to be built for the movie, several key action scenes are staged, rehearsed, and filmed, and Bronson even flubs a line during the shooting of a pivotal confrontation scene with Robards. Worth a watch for fans of the film.
