Controversial approach to a serious problem
derbigpr16 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I can see why the rating of this episode is so low. It's not because the episode itself is bad, it's a very typical "special" episode, feels much like old Top Gear special episodes, it's all in one piece, no guests, reviews or studio scenes. In fact it's the most "Top Geary" of all TGT episodes so far in terms of how it was filmed and how it felt to watch.

What is bad is the fact that they approach a topic of a country being incredibly poor and people in it starving with an overly silly approach, almost mocking the misfortune of the people indirectly, because they've wasted enough food to feed a 50 people during this episode. It also contains multiple scenes of what some people might consider to be "fish abuse", if you like. Of course, catching fish, killing it, eating it, etc. is a part of nature, as harsh as it may be, especially in parts of the world where people are desperately trying to survive, so expecting a "humane" approach from them is less than realistic.

Overall it's a pretty good episode, as long as you approach it knowing that it's going to have things in it that some people might find offensive or repulsive, consider it a more serious episode, a sort of mockocumentary dealing with problems of poverty, lack of food, lack of infrastructure, etc.

As others have noted this is not the best special they've done, but importantly it *is* a special - yes, finally, at the end of the season, we get treated to one.

How much I've missed the hour-long specials that save us from the tedious and unfunny introductions to 'conversation street' and the infinitely worse celebrity segment. I always thought, throughout the first season, that although the celebrity segment wasn't in the least bit amusing, it was at least short. This season it's like they're punishing us for daring to complain about the celeb section by making it take up about a third of each episode's running time (ergh!).

So if only for that reason alone the special gets extra marks.

As for the merits of the special itself, well the concepts they came up with were of course fatuous (even for the trio's standards), but people taking offence to the special are either being entirely too delicate or are missing the point that it's meant as a (very good) parody of celebrity engagement with world poverty/hunger.

The other reason specials are so much better than the other content on GT (and TG before it) is that it allows for spontaneous comedy, rather than the canned, scripted gags that usually fall flat throughout the rest of the show. So they were plenty of moments of off-the-cuff humour that are the best parts of the trio's routine. The location and journey wasn't as good as most other specials, and the task didn't evolve as they progress, which is the episode's main weakness for me.

Still, probably the best episode of the season, if only for the fact that it's an hour-long special that spares us from the worst parts of the regular episodes.

Great special, maybe too short
alent-2470117 February 2018
I miss the old double episode specials, but this was great as long as you don't live with a stick up your a**. Both the conversations and the situations the trio found themselves in were funny and entertaining.

Hilarious parody of sensitive celebrities
alijosius-martynas16 February 2018
They tried to help small bingo villige in africa, failed. Flew away with helicopter, anoyed a lot of people by their "insensitivnes", even though this clearly a parody of celebrities who help africa just to get more airtime on TV.

It's deeper
stoickov-ivan11 March 2018
Boys are showing how hard is to transport goods in Africa even 200 mi from shore. They want to say do not sent food to people in Africa, built them roads and they will do it them selves. This is a perspective which you will not see anywhere else. There is no luxury or even new cars in video.

Great Episode, Back to their best
prhayhurst19 February 2018
What a great, old style episode, just like they used to be. Never going to be sensitive, always going to send it up, and rightly so. Nice to see them doing things this series that is much more familiar and doesn't seem so strained. They have found their feet on Amazon, and this episode is what they're all about, cars, a task, arguments and laughs.

Something Fishy
cmtaylor-1099329 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
On the whole this isn't a bad addition to the series of special adventures the trio embark upon. This time they are sort of parodying the culture of celebrities that head out to Africa to 'feed the world'. Instead Jeremy and his colleagues are actively attempting to let their actions do the talking.

The supposed purpose of this road trip is for Clarkson, Hammond and May to transport freshly caught fish 200 miles inland using vehicles of their choosing. As daft and unnecessary as this concept is, it does provide a few laughs along the way, although I'm sure animal lovers and vegans would disagree. I don't know why they have to have a back story or supposed reason for their road trip adventures these days. In the past it was always about the celebration of what cars and machines can do in harsh environments.

The actual road trip element of the episode it quite enjoyable, and there's the usual accidents and breakdowns along the way.

The only thing that lets this episode down is the usual skits, such as them 'breaking' into a hotel to 'steal' an ice machine and Jeremy's idea of smoking his fish in diesel fumes. I often wish they'd just be themselves rather than playing stupid and incompetent fools. The harder they try to be funny, the less they are.

Another minor grumble, is that at one point later on in the episode we see James May get stranded in a deep flooded road, yet we never see anything about how he was rescued and pulled to safety.

On the whole this is far from their worse special, but the concept of transporting fish doesn't really hit the mark.

Another solid show
Goodbers922 January 2023
This is quintessential Clarkson, Hammond, and May. Great quips, entertaining tasks, and as always a meaningful purpose underneath it all. Watching these 3 come up with different ways of attempting to accomplish the same thing will never cease to draw me in.

Not sure why most reviews on here think it's the worst thing since to ever happen to humanity, but I think they need to get out of their homes and obtain a little humor and perspective.

If anything, take away from this episode the difficulty in moving food from one area to another. It's something we all take for granted, and if most of these reviewers are upset they need to come up with a better solution instead of ordering Uber eats and being a keyboard warrior.

Probably the worst special these guys have done
gopim17 February 2018
Ok,it is clear that they are making fun of celebs who fly in and do some charity, get photos taken, and then fly back. I get it. And I don't expect these guys to be sensitive and sincere in their efforts, they always fail intentionally. However, this time it was not entertaining at all. The whole episode was monotonous. In previous specials, they usually did a more variety of things, there interaction with people other than themselves, a change in scenery. This was just the three talking to each other on a 200 mile trip, which was forcefully extended to seem entertaining.

Not this one...
benisof16 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I usually like watching these three, but today no... The first thing that put me off was the idea that, supposedly, they were trying to help some poor people, but deliberately choose to pursue stupid ideas. You do not have to be a genius in order to see that their means of transporting fish were all doomed to fail...

I guess people like these three for the interaction between them, but that stops being funny when it's the only thing you see in the film.

The culmination of the episode was that, after failing to do what they were planning, they left the poor village in a helicopter. The cost of that alone could have fed the village for quite some time, I guess...

Best parts of Top Gear/The Grand Tour were those where they succeeded something interesting. It is entartaining watching someone manage to do something you can't do or can't ever afford. However, failing intentionally is just not funny.

Worst Special done by the "Trio"
RCSantos716 February 2018
Like the title says, this the worst Special done by the "Trio", as well one of the worst episodes, both in Grand Tour and Top Gear. Heck it is even worse than the India Special. I mean 40min in, and I was bored to death and annoyed by what I was seeing. What a bad way to end this Season.

Pretty Much Unwatchable
mostvarious19 February 2018
As a big fan of Jeremy, Richard and James, it's rather sad to see them fail with their own show. A couple of episodes from Season 2 gave me some hope, that the Grand Tour could possibly be good. But in this special, they just gave up, or got bored. It comes nowhere near the specials, we saw on TG. It's not about the food waste ( you, guys commenting on "making fun of poverty in Africa", are hilarious, Clarkson enjoys trolling you). It's about lack of character, dumb ideas and never-ending kindergarten jokes. And by the way, it's all about Clarkson now. Richard is a nine-year-old child with temper issues, and James is a grumpy, dead-on-the-inside outcast. Please, make Season 3 more watchable.

How to Waste Instead of Help
johnny2tons18 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Please tell me I didn't just watch them spend three days wasting all that fish that could have fed so many people. And in the end, they did nothing for the people in the village. The only people they helped were the ones they originally bought the fish from. This is the first time I've been disappointed in the Grand Tour guys.

Horrible and despicable
shazzaabi15 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The episode begins with the cast describing how the people of Bingo eat only one or two things every day. Imagine eating bread every day your whole life and someone said they brought you food you could have only dreamed about before and it is ruined not only ruined but the grand tour cast ruined had ruined it. Ruined it! This episode was about a poor village on a continent where famine kills constantly large amounts of people and the grand tour decided it would be funny to have three white millionaires buy all the fish in one town, throw it partially away (one scene you can see a man picking up a fish from the ground that was covered in sand which fell from hammonds contraption. This really broke my heart) ruin it and eventually rub it in the villagers faces. "We brought you this delicacy but decided lets spoil the fish first and then show the villagers this spoiled food they have never had."

I have loved the specials so far but this episode was disgusting. Really ashamed. There are not many people who can help or do good on the scale the grand tour cast and production can and when they were actually there to do some good they thought it would be a better plan to deprive the villagers from potentially giving them the highlight of their lives.

Gutted for the villagers. This was a horrible episode. How the hell could anybody think this was decent or suitable to air.

Bad Attempt
polsixe18 February 2018
Really, if they want to drive in mud just go to the boggers races, this was a too lame scripted effort, I would use the "s" word but too polite. Mozambique deserves better.

Is there any coincidence for TGT season ending just before TG season starts?

Damn guys, this was so bad in so many levels. There was no inspiration, no discovery of a far away place through driving, cars and some cool guys on the road. So, so, 😞.

Insulting.
johnsim21 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
"Cure World Hunger" was their tag. Sounds like a noble ideal. Sadly, it was downhill from there.

To be honest, after the first ten minutes as they had set out how they were going to transport fish from the coast 200 miles to the hungry, starving people I fast forwarded. Stopping several times in between. But it was what we'd already seen the trio doing so many times before.

In the end they were trying to sell rotten fish before flying out in a helicopter. Isn't that just crass?

This is the season where GT should have excelled after finding their feet with the first one. Alas, there was so few good articles. Is the problem they've abused so many press-cars that no manufacturer will let them have access any more? Surely with the Amazon budget they could just buy the cars they're about to trash instead?

Not worth keeping your Amazon Prime membership for.

Disgusting and despicable

What a waste of time and precious fish. Everyone involved should be ashamed of this episode. Poking fun at a poverty stricken African village is pathetic. Not a place for this misplaced childish humour.

A Silly and Nonsensical Episode of Grand Tour
nemocarlisle2 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
In this episode, Jeremy, James, and Hammond embark on an outrageous journey to transport fresh fish, deviating from a practical approach. Instead of utilizing a car battery and inverter for a refrigerator, they invent bizarre contraptions purely for comedic effect. While it may entertain some viewers, the premise lacks logical coherence and fails to deliver substantial content. Ultimately, this installment of Grand Tour embraces its frivolous and silly nature, catering to those seeking light-hearted amusement. However, it may not resonate with everyone, making it a hit-or-miss episode in terms of broader appeal.

Horrible! A bit of spoilers.
minunimion15 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Are they stupid, idiots, imbeciles or we are that watching them? That's the question. Making fun of poverty in Africa is it the right thing to do? How can that be possible? Are they so bad? Even more. Amazon should be ashamed to produce something like this awful show, but it's understandable, they are only interested in getting money, who cares people? Nobody cares. What's the purpose of trying to carry fishes from a city to another city using methods that only brainless people could think of. For fun? I never laughed! Not once! They laughed, the Big fat belly (Jeremy s... Clarkson) laughed. Go and f... yourself!

it's not a hardbody
howboutthisone_huh18 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I never watched this series either in the old format or the new, until season 4 came out, and then I watched every season in reverse order, for no particular reason. I'm sure over their 30 years they've made mistakes before but this one is a humongous gaffe, IMO. The truck jeremy is driving in this episode is not a 'hardbody' as he claims and riffs about throughout the episode. I'm not a gearhead but I do know my own truck and as soon as I saw what he was driving, I noticed A problem right off. I swear that he's not driving a 'hardbody' at all but rather a Frontier. The 'hardbody' was sold in the US until 1997 and then nissan came out with the Frontier. The early versions of the Frontier look similar but it's a different truck line entirely. According to wikipedia, the 'hardbody' continued to be sold in mexico until 2008 and venezuela until 2014. So I guess it's possible they could have bought one of these models but if you look close, the truck he's driving looks more like a Frontier, plus mexico and venezuela are both right hand side roads so the steering wheel should be on the left, not the right, as in the show. Okay, it's a british show and maybe the 'hardbody' wasn't available in england, but they pride themselves so much on their knowledge of the motor industry, it's inexcusable. And if not for the the constant 'hardbody' references, it would be nit picking to call them out, but for 'hardbody' owners, referring to a Frontier as a 'hardbody' crosses a line. That's not to say one truck is better than the other but you shouldn't mix the two. The 'hardbody' has a well deserved reputation as a great small truck even though it had a bed size bigger than most trucks built today. But after renault bought nissan, the quality of all their lines declined so it's unfair to lump them altogether in one now.
