Great, exciting show for improving your Spanish
mark_l_nicholson10 March 2017
We mostly watch Spanish language programming because we are trying to improve our Spanish and normally we watch shows from Spain because they are of higher quality than the shows from Latin America BUT this one is great. I love the actors and actresses and especially the actresses who play Belky and Doctor Tatiana. They exude the warmth and passion of latinas and make me want to move to Colombia. There are many other very good actors in this as well, the acting is first rate.

The story is exciting and compelling. It's great how they weave Belky's past into the present and vice versa. I can't believe there are 86 episodes in one season but I look forward to watching them all.

Suspenseful and Entertaining
dickiepena4 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
"La Niña" is a compelling story about a girl in Colombia that was kidnapped and forced to join the guerrillas. It is a Nextflix Original Spanish language series.

With 88 episodes, it really feels like four quality seasons of an American television show. Watching over the course of a few months, the show is very satisfying at its worse, and beautifully interesting at its best.

The cast brings more than talent, and this show features an ensemble cast that clearly placed their hearts into their work. Everyone does a wonderful job. I found myself rather emotional when I reached the closing credits of the final episode. The characters are developed in a way that makes them feel like you're visiting friends.

Being based on a true story, the narrative is rich in an array of emotions and personal struggles. I have not visited Colombia, and was unaware of the level of difficulty those who escaped the guerrillas faced. This prejudice is directly addressed by educating the audience as characters grow, or dig their heels in. It's done in a realistic way, without being preachy.

Initially, there are scenes set in the past and present that effectively add context when we meet Belky, La Niña. After escaping, at the still young age of 15, Belky is commits petty crimes to survive. She gets arrested, and lands in a re-entry program.

While in the program, Belky meets Manuel, who also escaped, and they start a romance. Belky also identifies her dream of studying medicine, and she is reunited with her biological family.

The brother Belky traded places with when she was abducted died while she was captive. As would be expected, it's devastating. The family is indeed in great pain. The performances are so powerful, viewers are flooded with empathy.

Reunification isn't easy. Belky and her mother experience conflict. Her sisters fear she is dangerous.

At times, Belky's mother could be misunderstood as being overbearing, but it's clear she's experiencing her own personal hell. Not only was Belky kidnapped, but her son died. The family also struggles economically.

Spanning close to four years, Belky faces many obstacles. Her former commander hunts her, a doctor tries to poison her, and a vengeful former guerrilla threatens Belky's family when she can't get to Belky.

When Belky is accepted to medical school, she finds a whole support system among the professors and students. The best part is that each character is explored, providing 3 dimensional people that go through their own growth and challenges.

Belky experiences some bullying, and later establishes a semi friendship with her bully, who we learn has a stressful home life of her own.

To me, this show illustrates the strength that lives within us. Belky's experiences are horrific, and they never break her. She keeps getting up. She keeps fighting. She is strength.

I would like to see IMDB add more information about the cast and crew. They are so talented. The production values are top notch. I don't get tired of saying the cast did an amazing job.

If I were to identify criticisms of this series, there were a few times that Belky reached out for help and adults tried to tell her things weren't as bad as she sees them. I wanted to scream at them a few times, but in the end, they all come through.

If you don't speak Spanish, English subtitles are available.

If you have the opportunity, this is a rich story, well worth your time.

Beautiful, Heartbreaking, and Inspiring
sfsmurf22 February 2017
It is so good to see a series about Colombia that venerates the human spirit in the face of adversity, rather than romanticizing violence, drug trafficking, and prostitution. The best television series I have seen in a long time.

A beautiful story about a girl, based on real events, who survives against all odds. Thank you, La Nina!

I couldn't turn it off
tccottrell17 January 2017
I am a busy career mom so between work, kids and home stuff I don't have a lot of time to watch TV but I was so captivated by this series that I couldn't stop. I literally stayed up until the early morning trying to get as many episodes watched as I could. I rooted for Belky as she had to overcome so many challenges. I cried as I learned about her history and past. I rejoiced every time she got back together with Manuel.

I was even more taken aback knowing that many of this was based on true stories. From a political perspective I didn't really understand the barriers and issues in reintegration besides an NPR segment I listened to in the car. This video helped me to understand a little bit more.

I recommend this show TO EVERYONE I know. I hope it receives a foreign film award because it deserves it!

Great Viewing
jcarr3502 January 2017
I thought I would check out this show from Columbia, not sure what to expect. Wow, let me tell you, I watched the first show and was hooked. I mean hooked to the point where I was binge watching 12 hours straight at a time because I just couldn't get enough. I was hoping it would keep on going. I am really hoping for a second season. I liked it so much that I will probably watch the entire season again.

The story is both dramatic and soap-opera which creates a unique experience for the viewer. The story has tense moments as well as lot of fun moments in it.

Highly recommended.

The acting was really really good , I went through all ranges of emotions in just one episode let alone all of them. I couldn't let go I had to watch this awesome show right to end. And I didn't want it to end , I want MORE of LANINA!!!!!! The casting people sure knew what they were doing with those actors. Hollywood got nothing on them, they play their parts so real. Love this show, Amazing!!

Hooked on this Show
bibleroxage5 February 2017
I am a pretty serious focused career woman. I pride myself on not being distracted by TV or NetFlix crap. Well, all that is history now. From the first episode, I was hooked. I thought it would dull down but the end of each episode leaves a cliff hanger that leaves you wanting more...and more....So, I binged this series only sleeping 4 hours each night until I finished all 86 episodes.

(Now, I am ashamed to admit that I am re-watching this bloody thing. My only question is: how will I overcome this addition :-). Joking...)

La Nina has Great acting. Wonderful directing. Best TV series I have ever seen. I don't have a single complaint at all. All the characters add so much colour and texture to the show that it will blow your mind. Victor is hilarious. Betty and Nana are sweet kids. Mrs Mireya is a delightfully negative mom. The struggles of an ex-Guerrilla, Belky is wonderfully acted by Ana Maria Estupinan. Oh, and Belky and Manuel's love story is epic.

So. Yeah. Enjoy this. Savour it. it is wonderful.

Fascinating drama turned soap opera. Derfinately bingable - UPDATED
dcunning40-178-7875437 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
The premise of this Spanish language with English subtitles series intrigued me, so I gave it a watch. The story of a little girl stolen away from her family to join the FARC (I believe) guerrillas in Columbia, then re-integrating back into society was interesting. This series has plenty of drama and suspense.

Then it turned into a nighttime soap opera similar in writing style to Quantico, IMHO. I would have NEVER started watching a soap opera, but I can't stop watching this one. I'm watching it on Netflix and am binging it. I'm at episode 15 of about around 86 episodes. I know I will finish it because I'm hooked. It's that good. I keep exclaiming to myself "I can't believe that just happened!"

********SPOILER ALERT********

It's interesting to see how Belky is put into tough situations and her guerrilla training/conditioning comes out, sometimes with repercussions. The actor playing Colonel Barragon does a good job. He makes you hate his character, but in a less-than-obvious movie bad guy way. He disrespects every female but his daughter. He overprotects her, probably because he knows there's guys out there just like himself. The man is a sleaze and is very comfortable successfully manipulating women to get his way. He has no scruples, none! It's also interesting how Belky has flashbacks that ends up helping her in medical school. The scene where she was attending a seminar and identified how a young woman died was powerful. The professors attributed that to Belky being smart, which she is, but didn't know her intimate experience with that situation which brought her to tears during the seminar.

********UPDATE********

Well, I finished the series. This is my response: (stands up and applauds enthusiastically)

Yea, though it's long (86 episodes) it's really great. There's a few episodes without much drama, but they were setting up a portion of the story that needed to happen. Belky goes though a lot, a whole lot! But after you watch all 86 episodes, the last 15 minutes of episode 86 were priceless. Watching it brought me to tears. It was a powerful moment. If you are tempted to skip to episode 86, I highly advise you not to do that. You have to see all that she goes through in order to appreciate those last 15 minutes. One subtle moment was when Belky acknowledged her friends in medical school. She even mentioned Santiago, who treated her in a disgraceful manner. She forgave him.

Here's a couple of standout supporting characters that I really enjoyed:

Victor: He's just a really nice guy, the kind you want for a friend. He's fun, has a moral compass, would do anything for his friends, but also has vulnerabilities which is displayed when his town had a mudslide. He became a really unlikable person. Fortunately, he came to his senses after his friends didn't abandon him.

Beatriz aka "Betty": I didn't see this coming. The actress's body language and facial expressions were acted really well. And her naivety and lack of control of her mouth at all the wrong times were endearing. I just liked her character. But wait, there's more....she can sing really well too! I enjoyed watching Betty.

a surprising great TV a show from Columbia
Alain-54 December 2016
this is the best TV show I ever view. It beats games oh thrones, house of cards, Dexter, et so many others because this a 86 episodes of pure delight. It is based on a reel context in the Columbian civil war against the Fark showing the intimate struggle of its people . This is not a scene created in Hollywood but the real life of a wounded country. The actors are fantastic specially the so tender Belky and the so scary Barragan, There are a lot of emphasis on family ties and friendship often menaced by external forces. Thank you Columbia for such a deep insight of your country. Thanks for Netflix to allow us to see so excellent show from other part of the world.

Both the script and the technical aspects suck
punk_slash_x20 August 2021
It falls short when it wants to be funny, pretty much all the time it needs of some.super convinient happening to make it "work" and it's predictable AF, It feels as if it were mocking the audience. And there's a lot.... like seriously A LOT of ugly shots with poor framing and god awful composition.

If this piece of garbage really is based on a true story, the real people should really feel offended.

Excellent true story about a Columbian girls transition from kidnap victim to medical student
dantheal29 December 2016
I really loved this series based on a true, compelling story portrayed by excellent actors. It is a long series, 86 episodes, and now that I have watched it all I am hungry for more. There are so many great characters in this show. There are evil ones, and really good ones. I found myself really liking a lot of these people and they seemed real to me. When the show was over I felt depressed because it was like losing a whole bunch of people that you care about all at once. The interactions between the characters were great as well. The actors should be commended for portraying characters in such a realistic light. They really are superb actors. I am recommending this show to all of my friends. If the producers of this show come up with a new show with these actors I want to watch it.

TV series based on a young girl who tries to form a new life after leaving the guerrilla.
melissaabreu28 December 2016
This series is truly amazing!! La Nina tells about a girl who was taken into the guerrillas of Colombia at a young age and how she manages to reintegrate to society. All the characters are well acted and well represented. You learn to love and hate some characters and believe me you will be hooked on this show! I think that the fact that this story is based on a real person is also what makes the show so great. As I watched the show I couldn't believe that this was something a real person had actually went through and survived. The series also is a great eye opener for the things people go through when they decide to leave the guerrillas and form a new life in our society. There is so much to learn from this series. I loved everything about this series, I think it was truly perfect from beginning to end.

Great show... terrible subtitles
emdijay21 November 2017
I just started watching this great show and it's really sad to think non-Spanish speakers are missing a lot due to the terrible work in translating from Spanish into English.

The Colombian slang used makes some of the dialogues fun and interesting, and I do understand slang it's sometimes difficult to translate. But when in the same dialogue you see that the character is referring to a little girl as 'he' then as 'she' and in the very next line becomes a 'he' again you lose track of what they're talking about.

Let alone when they translate basic words such as kid or child as 'curly hair' and there's no one with curly hair on the scene!?...

I really hope the translation gets better so I can recommend the show to my English speaking friends.

Really great show!
gregjhonda29 March 2017
I am very picky about what shows I watch. I always check for high IMDb ratings even though I know a lot of the ratings are placed by shills. This series is like reading a really great book. The show goes to great lengths to develop the characters in detail. After 10 or so episodes it's just like your visiting with a group of close friends. Tons of Colombian, Spanish and medical culture abound with almost no annoying special effects. Great story line, excellent video although the dialog is not in English but in English subtitles. At times its a bit like a soap opera but the plot is ever changing. I was not hooked at all until the end of the 6th episode so like many of these shows you have to hang in there to see if it's going to be worth watching or a bust. It's also a great story about an individual being strong willed and going against the tide to achieve success. It's right up there with my most favorite shows like The Walking Dead, Mad Men, The Big Bang Theory, Man In the High Castle, Jessica Jones, Bosch, House of Cards, Narcos. Like Foyle's war this show bucks the trend of being a cookie cutter show by avoiding the tons of meaningless dialog filler that many USA based shows seem to favor. If you do end up liking it you are treating to a generous 86 episodes binge worthy offering!

Superb and unforgettable; that's La Nina.
tljanssen2 April 2017
This is the best dramatic TV series I have seen in my 67 years. The plot lines, character development, the script writing, the directing and the acting are all superb. The honesty and integrity of the people who made this show work is something that is virtually non-existent in the U.S. This show would never see the light of day here in America because of corporate entertainment bias, Hollywood's obsession with the artificial and superficial, and governmental censorship. I am thinking about moving away to a country like Colombia or Ecuador someday. Netflix knows how to find hidden gems.

La Nina
margie-2211514 January 2017
I also started watching this without really knowing what it was about and I as many are, I am hooked, I've been binge watching every chance I get, excellent movie. I feel for those children. What they had to endure and see, some not making it. It's a terrible life also for their parents and the people they would kidnap and torture. The things these people will do. I don't even know why I call them people, because that they are not they are not humans, who in their right mind would do this to people. I mean they also have kids, families, don't they think that it can happen to them. I get so overwhelmed when I think about this. This really has to stop, because right now, this is going on in that country still.

vlwaldo-679-7158854 August 2017
All I can say is it's one of the best shows I've watched one night it kept me up until 5 AM I hate when I do that but I just couldn't stop watching it. it moves along so fast and you can't wait to see the next episode I guarantee you'll love it. But be prepared for some nailbiting events. I'm so happy Netflix put the show on, but it's so sad to know that these events are based on real events

A must See- Warning - Addictive - and Based on True History of Latin America !
capricet10 January 2018
How did I miss this earlier? I had to watch as many episodes as possible to make sure I was able to view every single one. My heart cracked wide open in the end of the 80+ episode when I did not think I could love the series more, feel like I lived with the main characters, and felt the pain of the thousands of children and families torn from the wars. The Wars were faced throughout Latin America. Now is is the Narco/drug wars. Similar tales of being forced to choose sides or die. The story telling honors those whose stories have not been documented but face these very same pains, violence, and still hold on tight to their humanity and love. I feel that I am a more loving human being from watching this. Humanity , forgiveness, and hope are the colors chosen to paint this masterpiece.

Important for understanding ht Peace process in Colombia.
knuthny27 February 2017
As Colombia, and the President won the Noble Peace Price in 2016, this TV series, is important for understanding what has happened, and is on the way to happen in Colombia in the years to come. The general image it leaves us with is how difficult it will be (ans is) to make peace in a country with more than 50 years of war. There are so many challenges, so much misunderstandings, hate, ignorance, criminality, corruption, etc., that is in the way for full peace. It is not easy to forgive, or understand - which is made very clear to everyone in the TV-series.

Personally, I love the TV-series, also due to great actors. And it is very good to learn so much of Colombias recent history in this way.

Thank you CARACOL!!

Outstanding
wjmriggens26 August 2017
I'm a guy that doesn't speak very much Spanish. I hunt, fish and live my life in God's Country (Idaho-USA). I love and protect my kids and family. I have never watched a Latin novella...I was kind of intrigued because it had to do with Columbia.. I was there a lifetime ago (1980's) I watched 3 episodes on Netfix and was then hooked for the entire 86 episodes. This "novela" blew me away. So many GREAT performances throughout. The most touching and convincing, to me, was Ana Maria Estupinan..

Ana Maria Estupinan gives a performance that rivals and equals Vivian Leigh in "Gone With The Wind". Vivian Leigh is to Scarlet in "Gone With The Wind" as Ana Maria Estupinan is to Belky in "La Nina" No one will ever identify or replicate her performance as Belky. Probably the most important fact about Anna Maria Estupinan, to me, is that she is Christian in real life. This girl, not once allowed the production company, producers or directors have her character "Belky" act in an immoral way. Kudos .. There are no words that I can say that will convey my respect for her in this film project. May God always bless you Ms. Estupinan

a Masterpiece
capricet10 January 2018
Humanity, forgiveness, and hope are the colors used to pain this masterful storytelling based on the reality faced in many countries around the world. The chose of becoming a killer or be killed faced by children of the world. This is a must see show. Central American children are now facing this with Marco/Drug Wars and in the past with the US sponsored war against democratically elected presidents in support of military dictators. Who is good or bad - it is more about what choice you make and what are your intentions and their consequences... A must see show!

Just amazing
idrincon27 February 2018
I grew up in Latin America watching novelas and every once in a while there was a production that changed the rules and the way novelas are created and shown. La Niña is one of a kind and a groundbreaking effort. It is not only based on a real story, but it includes believable characters that we all can relate. The story is so well told that you are amazed no one thought of something like that before. All dramatic lines have a purpose and it also has a great dose of comedy. I am a native Spanish speaker, so I can appreciate the smaller nuances (like the use of popular sayings that I remember my grandma using), always in the right context. Also, those of us who lived the Colombian conflict can appreciate the seriousness of the main story and how well it was told. In summary, if there is one novela you want to watch to really understand the genre and learn something about the real culture and daily living of people in Colombia, this is it.

This is the first time I take time to write a review.

This series has it all. I couldn't get enough and any show I watch just can't compare. The storyline, based on a true story, is amazing. The characters and actors who portray them are amazing as well. Wish they made more TV shows like this one...
